Summary

Overview

HEMPZ is a United States body- and hair-care brand built around hemp seed oil, founded in 1998 [1]. It sells scented moisturisers, body oils, fragrance sprays, hair care and lip products, positioned at an affordable, drugstore price point and marketed under the line "Hydration that Lasts. Scents you Love." The company describes hemp seed oil as the ingredient at the core of its formulas, valued for its omega fatty acids and its silky feel on skin.

Since April 2020 the brand has been owned by the private-equity firm TSG Consumer Partners, which acquired it from its previous owners [5]. HEMPZ continues to trade actively under its own name, with new and limited-edition products and a copyright line reading "©2026 Hempz" on its site.

Origin

According to its own account, HEMPZ began in 1998 and "introduced the magic of hemp seed oil to the world of body care," a moment the company frames as the start of "a sensorial revolution" [1]. Materials from its later owner credit the brand with pioneering hemp-based beauty products in the United States [6].

The brand's early corporate roots lie in the professional tanning and salon channel. Business records trace it to the Dallas-based skin-care company Supre Tan, which developed the HEMPZ line before the brand later passed through several corporate owners [5]. This "Supre" should not be confused with the Australian fashion retailer Supré, part of the Cotton On Group, an unrelated company with a near-identical name [9].

Ownership

TSG Consumer Partners, a consumer-focused private-equity firm, acquired HEMPZ on 1 April 2020. In its statement on the deal, TSG said it aimed to support the brand as it "launches in new distribution channels, increases its online presence, and expands its product portfolio" [6]. Before that acquisition, the brand operated within a Dallas-based professional tanning and salon group. HEMPZ has continued to operate as a standalone brand since the change of ownership.

Philosophy and positioning

HEMPZ centres its identity on hemp seed oil delivered through scented, daily body-care routines. The company says every formula "starts with plant-based ingredients chosen for how they feel on skin," naming pomegranate extract and shea butter alongside the hemp seed oil. It describes the oil as "powerfully hydrating," "naturally soothing" and "skin-strengthening," and points to its omega fatty acids as supporting the skin's barrier.

A recurring theme is the distinction between cosmetic hemp seed oil and intoxicating cannabis products. The brand states that its products are completely THC-free — "exhilarating, not intoxicating," in its own phrasing — and that they "might give you all the feelz, but they won't get you high" [1]. On its ingredient page it adds that hemp seed oil's fatty-acid composition "closely resembles the skin's natural lipids, which is why skin 'accepts' it so easily."

HEMPZ also frames hemp as an environmentally low-impact crop, describing it as "naturally sustainable and thoughtfully grown, making it as good for the earth as it is for your body."

Products and innovation

The brand's range spans body moisturisers, bath products, hydrating body fragrance sprays, sun care and self-tanners, hair care organised by hair type, and face, lip and even pet products. Its longest-running signature item is the Original Herbal Body Moisturizer, a hemp-seed-oil lotion that combines vitamins A, C and E, shea butter and ginger root extract [8].

Newer lines reflect a move toward more targeted formulas. The Beauty Actives Collection pairs the brand's scents and hydration with a single focused ingredient — versions include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, bakuchiol and vegan collagen. In early 2024 HEMPZ expanded that collection and introduced a line of Herbal Body Oils in scents such as Original and Sweet Pineapple & Honey Melon [7].

On ethics, the company states that its formulas are vegan, cruelty-free, and made without parabens, harsh sulfates or phthalates. It is certified by Leaping Bunny, which it calls "the internationally recognized gold standard in cruelty-free certification for health and beauty products." Products are marked "Made in U.S.A."

Recognition

Editorial coverage of HEMPZ has centred on its Original Herbal Body Moisturizer. A review by The Daily Beast described the lotion as "soft and smooth to the touch without any greasy residue" and singled out its "floral-and-fruity" scent; the reviewer expressed long-term loyalty, writing that "there is only one body moisturizer brand I've used for the past few years" [8]. By 2024 the brand was marketing itself as a source for hemp-seed-oil skincare for more than 25 years.

Current status

HEMPZ is an active, currently trading United States brand owned by TSG Consumer Partners since 2020. Its site continues to release seasonal and limited-edition products, and the brand reports distribution across multiple channels and regions, including Nordic markets. Because it is owned by an outside investor while continuing under its own name, its status is best described as acquired rather than independent.
