Overview
Herbacin is a German herbal skincare and body care brand made by Herbacin cosmetic GmbH, which develops and produces its range in Wutha-Farnroda, a municipality in Thuringia. The company traces its beginnings to two Thuringian pharmacists and dates its founding to around 1905 [2]. It is best known for Herbacin kamille, a line of chamomile-based hand creams and related care products, and it describes itself as one of the oldest herbal cosmetics brands in Germany.
The brand's history reaches back a long way: German Wikipedia's list of brand names and products in East Germany includes Herbacin as a pre-war brand, at that time a hair tonic sold against hair loss [7]. Today the company concentrates on skin and body care, with hand care at the centre of the range, and it remains active, selling through its own web shop, brand stores and several regional websites.
Origin & founders
According to the company's own account, Herbacin was founded "around 1905" by two pharmacists from Thuringia. The brand site repeats the date in its "Qualität seit 1905" (quality since 1905) line, and does not give a more precise founding date.
A 2018 English-language brochure issued by Herbacin USA tells a slightly longer version of the story. It says the company began as an idea in 1900, when the two pharmacists set out "to create a new personal care formula inspired from the heart of nature", and that the business was officially founded in Eisenach in 1905 [9]. The two dates are not in tension: the brochure assigns 1900 to the idea and 1905 to the formal founding, while the brand site gives only the later year, hedged as approximate. This article follows the 1905 founding date.
The brochure also says the founders gave Herbacin a distinctive visual identity early on, one built around the green forests and flowering meadows of the region where the brand began, and that this image is still the foundation of the brand.
History & milestones
Much of Herbacin's documented history comes from the company itself, and the record between its founding and the present day is sparse. The clearest independent trace from the early decades is the entry in German Wikipedia's list of East German brand names, which identifies Herbacin as a pre-war brand and describes the product as a hair tonic for hair loss. The entry gives no dates, but it places the brand among the names known in East Germany.
Herbacin's own material points to a different product as the turning point. A 2023 press release issued by the company names "wuta-kamill" as an early bestseller and says that the chamomile hand cream that followed went on to achieve worldwide recognition [8]. The company presents its kamille line as its first and as one of its most popular worldwide.
The same press release describes the business as originally based in Eisenach before it expanded to Wutha-Farnroda. The company's registered seat is now on Kahlenberger Straße in Wutha-Farnroda; the German Wikipedia article on Kahlenberg, a village within the municipality, notes that the headquarters of the cosmetics manufacturer Herbacin sits on the western edge of the village [6].
In 2024 the company carried out a user observation of two of its chamomile products on people with atopic dermatitis, discussed under Science & innovation below.
Ownership
Herbacin is operated by Herbacin cosmetic GmbH, a German limited company. The 2018 brochure calls Herbacin "a German family-run company" [9]. No parent company, outside investor or acquisition has been publicly documented.
Outside Germany, the brand has its own regional websites. The 2018 brochure was issued by Herbacin USA, based in Carrollton, Texas, and the main Herbacin website links to country sites for Australia, the United States and Canada, and China, as well as an international site for the EU.
Philosophy & positioning
Herbacin's slogan is "Schöne Haut liegt in unserer Natur", which translates as "beautiful skin lies in our nature" and which the company says is "not just a slogan" but a deeply held conviction. Its homepage sums up the brand in four words: inspired by nature, gentle, well tolerated and effective.
The company says its aim in every formula is to give priority to the ingredients that are most skin-compatible, effective and plant-based. Its skincare uses extracts of fruits, spices and herbs, along with essential oils and plant butters, which Herbacin says it sources preferably from controlled organic and sustainable cultivation. The 2018 brochure adds that the company selects some of these raw materials, including organically grown ones, from within its own region, and it describes the kamille line as drawing on Herbacin's own biodynamic herb cultivation near Hörsel in Thuringia.
According to Herbacin, formulas are developed in its own laboratory, which the company credits with guaranteeing quality in both development and production. On its research page, the brand describes its approach as combining traditional knowledge of medicinal plants with modern formulation techniques [3]. It frames this as research "with tradition", tracing its expertise back to a Thuringian pharmacy.
The homepage lists a set of product claims: vegan, paraben-free, mineral-oil-free and "without animal raw materials" [1]. These claims should be read as applying to most products rather than to the whole range. Herbacin's own ingredient directory includes beeswax (Cera Alba) [4], and the 2018 brochure describes the kamille lip balms as made with natural beeswax [9].
Products & innovation
The homepage states that the range comprises more than 180 products. While the 2018 brochure described a complete face, body and hair care programme, the current brand site presents Herbacin as a skin and body care brand, with a strong emphasis on the hands.
The core of the range is Herbacin kamille, named after the German word for chamomile. The brochure presents the Herbacin kamille Original Hand Cream as "our classic", alongside a lighter Herbacin kamille Soft Hand Cream that it says absorbs immediately. The kamille line also includes a fragrance-free hand cream (Kamille Handcreme parfümfrei), a cream soap, a hand and nail balm, a body lotion and intensive care creams. Lip balms round out the line, including a chamomile version and classic variants flavoured with lime and ginger or with peppermint and rosemary.
A separate Wellness line covers scented hand creams. The brochure lists a Lavender hand cream, which it calls award-winning without naming the award, and a Wild Rose variant. It describes the Lavender cream as paraben-free, free of mineral oils and dermatologically tested. Other product areas named on the brand's research page include a Skin Solutions series aimed at atopic dermatitis and a foot care range.
The company's published ingredient directory lists more than 70 raw materials, from chamomile flower extract and calendula to shea butter, jojoba oil, urea and sodium hyaluronate.
Science & innovation
Herbacin says it accompanies many of its products with user observations, informal studies in which volunteers use a product and report how it performs, to check that the products deliver on their promises. The most detailed example on its website is a 2024 observation involving 15 volunteers with atopic dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition known in German as Neurodermitis [5]. Participants used the fragrance-free Kamille hand cream and the Kamille cream soap at least two to three times a day for four weeks.
The company reports that the results were published in the magazine Diskurs Dermatologie, issue 6/24. On its site, Herbacin quotes selected comments from eight participants aged 29 to 71, who mentioned less dryness, flaking and redness, quick absorption and a formula that did not sting or itch. A user observation is not a controlled clinical trial, and the published comments were chosen by the company. A second observation, covering the Skin Solutions series, is linked from the same research page.
The 2018 brochure also states that products are researched, developed and produced at Herbacin's own facilities and laboratories in Germany [9], and that the labels carry a "dermatologically tested" claim.
Sustainability
Herbacin's sustainability statements centre on raw materials and local production. The company says it prefers ingredients from controlled organic and sustainable cultivation, and it emphasises that development and production take place in Wutha-Farnroda, which the brochure places in the middle of a nature reserve. No third-party certifications for the brand are documented.
Current status
Herbacin is active. Its German web shop carries a 2026 copyright notice in the name of Herbacin cosmetic GmbH, and a product catalogue was uploaded to the site in mid-2025. The 2024 user observation is published on the brand's website.
Distribution runs through several channels. The company sells online and through its own brand stores: the 2018 brochure names corporate stores in Eisenach and Erfurt, and the 2023 press release lists three brand shops in Frankfurt am Main, Erfurt and Eisenach [8]. The brand also offers wholesale through the Faire marketplace and operates regional websites for Australia, North America, China and the EU. Herbacin states that its products are known from Europe through Arabia and Asia to the United States. The company maintains accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.
