Summary

Overview

Hermetica, also styled Hermetica Paris, is a niche French perfume house founded in Paris in 2018 by Clara and John Molloy [1]. Its defining feature is an alcohol-free formula: instead of the alcohol base used in most fine fragrance, Hermetica builds its scents on patented molecules derived from sugarcane bagasse, the fibrous residue left after the cane is pressed. The company says this approach lets a fragrance perfume and hydrate the skin at the same time, and it presents the results as "molecular" perfumes positioned within clean perfumery.

The Molloys had earlier founded the niche house Memo, and Hermetica became their second venture into fine perfumery. The brand developed its alcohol-free technology — which it calls Innoscent — with the fragrance house Symrise, and the trade title Premium Beauty News profiled it at launch as "the first brand of molecular fragrances" [5]. The house remains active, running a live retail site and international stockists as of 2026.

Origin & founders

Hermetica's own account credits the founding to the couple Clara and John Molloy [1]; some editorial profiles instead foreground Clara Molloy — described as a poet and the house's artistic director — as its driving creative figure [6]. According to the company, the brand grew from a conviction to "initiate a new way to experience and create perfumes," one built around care for both skin and environment. The concept took shape from 2017, when the patented alcohol-free base and its sugarcane-derived "green molecules" were developed.

The name signals the brand's conceptual frame. According to the niche retailer 50-ml, "Hermetica" derives from the Corpus Hermeticum, a medieval alchemical treatise, and the house describes its extraction approach as drawing on "the alchemical art" [6]. Hermetica frames the act of wearing a scent as an "olfactive dance," a metaphor it has placed at the centre of its identity since 2022 and condensed into the tagline "Dance your fragrance."

History & milestones

The brand launched in 2018 with a founding fragrance named Source¹ and early placements at retailers including Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdale's. At launch the range ran to 13 scents across four collections — Emerald Stairways, Vertical Ambers, The Door and Dry Waters — as reported by Premium Beauty News [5]. The house later renamed these families; the current site organises its fragrances as Floral Impulse, Fruity Energy, Woody Bow and Ambery Move [2].

In 2019 Hermetica began a partnership with the French NGO Planète Urgence on reforestation and expanded into stores such as Globus in Geneva and Le Printemps in Paris. A 2022 collaboration with a professional dancer accompanied an "Art of feeling" campaign that made dance a stated creative principle, and in 2023 the house redesigned its logo and adopted recyclable-paper packaging and recycled-glass bottles. Trade coverage by WWD reported the alcohol-free brand moving into physical retail as part of an international expansion [8].

Products & innovation

Hermetica's central claim is technical. The fragrances rest on a patented, water-based and alcohol-free formula whose scent molecules are produced from bagasse, and the company presents this as a skincare-style base "capable of perfuming and hydrating at the same time." The underlying Innoscent technology was developed with Symrise over more than two years with the perfumer Aliénor Massenet, who said that scents "freed of alcohol" are hydrating and "more powerful than formulas containing alcohol"; she is named among the creative team alongside Philippe Paparella [5].

The house draws on a palette it lists at more than 70 ingredients, spanning naturals and absolutes such as bergamot, neroli, jasmine, tuberose, rose, oud and sandalwood alongside a range of constructed accords. Signature scents include Source¹, presented as the founding fragrance, together with individual perfumes such as Jade888, Tuberoli, Darkoud and Verticaloud. The niche retailer 50-ml places Hermetica in the niche and luxury fragrance segment, emphasising originality and what it calls scientific innovation.

Sustainability

Hermetica states that its perfumes are vegan and cruelty-free, containing "no elements of animal origin" and not tested on animals. The company says its bottles are made of locally sourced recycled glass and are refillable, with recyclable paper packaging introduced in 2023. It also reports sourcing a large share of its raw materials from reused inputs — Premium Beauty News cited up to 50 percent renewable ingredients, including molecules drawn from orange peel and paper-industry waste [5]. Through its work with Planète Urgence, the brand has pledged to plant 5,000 trees in Madagascar and Indonesia [3].
