Summary

Overview

Hiram Green is an independent natural-perfume house founded in 2013 by the Canadian-born perfumer of the same name, who works in the Netherlands [1]. The house makes fragrances entirely from natural ingredients, handcrafted in small batches, and remains a one-person operation that the founder has led alone since launch [5]. It is active, selling a current lineup of nine fragrances with worldwide shipping from its own site.

The brand sits within the wave of artisan and all-natural perfumery that gained visibility in the 2010s. Its stated aim is to show that natural perfumery can be rich and long-lasting rather than weak or short-lived, and to be judged on smell rather than on the "natural" label alone.

Origin & founders

Hiram Green grew up in Toronto, where he studied Fine Arts, then moved to London intending to work as an artist. He took a job in a fragrance shop, found that he enjoyed it, and in 2003 opened his own niche perfume store. After closing the shop a few years later, he was unable to find work at an established perfume company; as he recalled, "I tried to find a job in a perfume company, selling or marketing, but no one wanted to hire me. So, I thought, 'I will start my own perfume company'" [5].

His training in perfumery is self-taught rather than formal, drawn over roughly a decade from working with raw materials and reference texts. He has said this gives his work "a more distinctive and personal style." In 2013 he launched the house and its first fragrance, Moon Bloom [1].

The company's current contact address places its office in Ankeveen, a village in North Holland just outside Amsterdam [3], which matches the founder's description of living and working "just outside Amsterdam in the Dutch countryside" [1]. Editorial profiles by Nez and Smell Stories instead locate his studio in Gouda [5][6], most likely an earlier location before a move.

Philosophy & positioning

According to the company, every fragrance is developed and handcrafted in small batches, and perfumes are aged for at least three months before bottling. Hiram Green describes the results as "intense, opulent, and expressive" — a positioning meant to counter the common criticism that natural perfumery is faint or fleeting [6].

The house frames the "natural" element as a method rather than a selling point. As the founder put it, "If people want to buy my perfumes because they are natural, that's fine, but they should buy them because they like their smell" [5]. He has also said he feels "one should not have to make certain allowances because a perfume is entirely natural" [6].

Products & innovation

The brand's fragrances are built on a base of organic grain alcohol and natural essential oils, with colour derived from the ingredients themselves rather than added dye. The company states that its perfumes are made entirely from natural, ethically sourced, GMO-free and cruelty-free ingredients. They are described as vegan, with one documented exception: the beeswax absolute used in the fragrance Slowdive [6].

Moon Bloom, a white floral, was the debut release. The current lineup spans nine fragrances across several scent families, including Slowdive (floral amber), Arbolé (dry woods), Shangri La (fruity chypre) and Hyde (leather amber). The house presents itself under the line "Handcrafted & Entirely Natural Perfumes."

On packaging, the company says it uses European-sourced materials with minimal plastic: recyclable glass bottles, caps of beechwood and cork, and boxes of unbleached recycled cardboard.

Recognition

In 2019 the fragrance Hyde won the Art & Olfaction Award in the Artisan category, an international prize that, in the brand's words, "celebrates excellence in independent, artisan and experimental perfumery" [1]. That year the perfumer was also profiled in Nez, the specialist fragrance publication, as part of a series on natural perfumers.

Current status

Hiram Green remains an active, independent house. Its site carries a 2026 copyright notice, lists a current nine-fragrance range, and offers worldwide shipping. The business continues to operate as a single-perfumer studio rather than a larger company, distributed through its own direct-to-consumer site and international stockists.
