Overview
Hugh Parsons is a niche men's fragrance brand that sells itself on British heritage but is owned and produced in Italy. Its origins trace to a company founded in 1925 in London by Hugh Edward Lancelot Parsons, a British-army veteran who set up at 99 Regent Street as a maker of silk ties and accessories. The modern perfume line, however, belongs to the Italian fragrance house Profumitalia, run by the Cerizza family near Naples [7]. The brand sums up the split in its own tagline: "scents of English style but Italian soul."
The fragrances are named after London streets and landmarks and are positioned as an under-the-radar collector's label. The brand remains active, with its newest editions dated to 2024.
Origin and founders
According to the company, Hugh Edward Lancelot Parsons established his business in 1925 at 99 Regent Street in London, a central address known for stylish shops, initially specialising in high-quality silk ties and accessories [2]. A third-party review adds that Parsons had been a soldier in the British army and turned to the silk trade after his military service [4]. The brand cites the master tailors of Savile Row and Jermyn Street, along with that military background, as the design influences behind its later emphasis on refined, classic style.
The perfume line came much later. The company says its first eau de parfum was created in 1998, marking the move into niche men's perfumery [2]. The early bottle design, it states, references the precision of military uniforms and classic army flasks.
Ownership
Behind the London branding, Hugh Parsons is an Italian operation. The brand belongs to Profumitalia, a fragrance house founded by the Cerizza family that produces scents for several labels, including Acqua di Portofino and Boellis [7]. The operating and e-commerce entity is Profumart srl, an Italian limited-liability company registered in Frattamaggiore, in the province of Naples [3]. Within Profumitalia's portfolio, Hugh Parsons sits alongside sister brands such as Boellis, Panama 1924 and Pineider. Trade coverage of the 2018 TFWA exhibition presented Hugh Parsons as part of the Italian house's line-up next to Pineider and Panama [11].
The brand does not hide the arrangement. Its own materials describe the fragrances as capturing "the essence of British style, with a distinctive Made in Italy touch" [1].
Philosophy and positioning
Hugh Parsons frames its perfumes as a translation of British elegance and the founder's London into scent. The company describes its fragrances as inspired by the elegance of the British army and by the streets and best-known places of London, the founder's city. It summarises its values as "elegance, style, personality" and ties them to what it calls a "very British essence."
In practice the brand is marketed lightly. Community reviewers describe it as barely promoted and rarely stocked in physical European stores. One candid assessment captured the disconnect directly: "British name, all made in Italy, zero information about the alleged 'heritage', terrible promotion... and surprisingly nice fragrances" [6].
Products
The first Hugh Parsons fragrance was Traditional, described on fragrance databases as an exploration of timeless classicism meant to embody the essence of London [8]. The line expanded into a series of scents named after London locations, among them Whitehall, King's Road, Oxford Street, Regent Street, Hyde Park, Bond Street and Notting Hill [4], later joined by releases such as Piccadilly Circus and Savile Row. The perfumer most often associated with the house is Maurizio Cerizza, with Maurice Roucel credited on some compositions.
The start date of the perfumery itself is recorded inconsistently. The brand's own site dates its first eau de parfum to 1998 [2], while Fragrantica describes a men's cologne line beginning in 1988 [6]; the earlier date may refer to colognes that preceded the later eau de parfum.
Current status
The brand is active. It runs an e-commerce site, its fragrances remain in distribution across European and Nordic retailers, and its newest editions are dated to 2024 [6]. Despite that, it keeps a deliberately low profile, with minimal advertising and a niche, collector-oriented audience.
