Overview
I.C.O.N. is a professional haircare company founded in 2002 [2]. It began as a partnership between two people working on different continents: Jorge Rubín, a salon owner and businessman from Vigo in Galicia, Spain, and Chiara Scudieri, a former international artist who moved into product research and development and is based in Los Angeles. That division of labour still defines how the company runs. Creative work, ingredient research and product testing are led from Los Angeles, while the salon business, marketing and education are directed from Spain. The brand's own founders page records the head office simply as "Headquarters: Los Angeles" [2], whereas Spanish business press describes I.C.O.N. as a Galician company with dual US–Spanish operations [6].
The company makes shampoos, conditioners, treatments, styling products and hair colour, positioned chiefly for professional salon use alongside a consumer retail range. It remains active, with new products and awards recorded as recently as 2024.
Origin and founders
Rubín started out in his father's barbershop in Vigo before building a network of more than 20 salons across Spain and Mexico, and he has stayed based in his home city. He serves as chief executive, concentrating on marketing, communication and the business side of the salon trade; his stated personal motto is to start today doing what will matter most tomorrow. Scudieri, described on the founders page as the creative director whose passion "defines the message, spirit and soul" of the company, focuses on searching out new ingredients and testing formulas in Los Angeles [2]. According to the company, the two founders set out to build a business with passion and to create unique products and exceptional concepts [5].
Philosophy and positioning
I.C.O.N. presents itself as a company that joins innovation with sustainability. It says it aims to make "quality products with natural and organic ingredients from sustainable resources, that are good for the hair and the environment" [2], and states a broader mission of enriching the beauty industry. The brand lists its products as vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free and sulfate-free, and says its packaging uses Post-Consumer Resin recycled from existing PET bottles [1]. These are the company's own claims; no independent certifying body is named. Spanish coverage has summarised its positioning as craftsmanship, design and sustainability [6]. Its tagline is "Love Live I.C.O.N."
Products and innovation
The everyday range is grouped under "Regimedies", the company's term for what it frames as a fusion of a regimen and a remedy tailored to each hair type, with variants for hydration, anti-frizz, detox, repair and organic care [1]. Alongside this sits a dedicated professional salon line whose treatments carry names such as Purify, Shift, Proshield, Cure and Infusion. Signature products across the catalogue include the India collection, the Power Peptides molecular treatment, the 5.25 Hair Replenisher and a CBD 1000 Oil. In hair colour, the company has introduced Ecotech Color, an ammonia-free permanent dye, and Instatone, a gel-format colour designed for application in under 20 minutes [6].
Salon treatments draw on ingredients such as salicylic acid, shea butter, babassu seed, amino acids and peptides, and on two proprietary systems the brand promotes: a bond-building "Plex" system, marketed as LinkBond and FuseBond, and Power Peptides, described as working at a molecular level [4]. The company also runs a professional training platform, launched as EduCreate and later renamed I.C.O.N. VIEW for digital delivery.
Recognition
I.C.O.N. has drawn a steady run of awards from Spanish beauty publications, among them Premios Woman Beauty, Vogue Belleza, Glamour Belleza, Clara Belleza and Cuídate Men's Health, spanning products from the Elixir in 2015 to the India Supercharged Mask in 2024 [3]. Its Power Peptides treatment and India Curl Cream were recognised in the Marie Claire Hair Awards in 2023 and 2022. Beyond individual product prizes, the company was named Best Beauty Company at the European Business Awards in 2021, and Rubín received a business award the same year [3]. In 2021 the regional Spanish outlet El Español profiled the brand as "the Galician company that cares for the hair of stars around the world," though it named no specific clients [6].
Current status
The company remains active. Its most recent recorded milestone is a 2024 award for the India Supercharged Mask, and it continues to operate a multilingual website and a salon network across Spain, Mexico and wider European markets [3].
