IBSA Pharma

IBSA Pharma is the Swiss pharmaceutical group IBSA Institut Biochimique SA, founded in Lugano in 1945 [2]. It develops, manufactures and sells medicines rather than beauty products in the usual sense: its portfolio covers ten therapeutic areas, from reproductive medicine and endocrinology to pain relief, respiratory care, dermatology and aesthetic medicine. Its link to skincare runs through hyaluronic acid, the moisture-binding molecule that the company produces by fermentation and that underpins both a small cosmetic line, ialugen Calm, and its aesthetic-medicine range.

The company as it exists today largely took shape after 1985, when it was close to bankruptcy [4] and passed to Arturo Licenziati, who turned a small laboratory into an international group. According to the company, its products are now present in more than 90 countries, supported by 20 subsidiaries in Europe, China and the United States [3]. The group remains active.

The sources agree that IBSA was set up in 1945 in the Lugano area of the Swiss canton of Ticino. Where they differ is on who founded it. German-language Wikipedia states that the company was established by three Swiss natural scientists, who are not named, and that it concentrated at first on the Swiss market [12]. Italian-language Wikipedia also describes an early focus on Switzerland.

IBSA's own anniversary material gives the title of founder to Arturo Licenziati, whom it calls the "Founder of IBSA" [4]. The same pages, however, date the start of his involvement to 1985, four decades after the company was created. The title therefore describes his role in rebuilding the business, not its creation in 1945. Italian Wikipedia shows the same tension within a single article: its main text says Licenziati acquired the company in 1985, while its information box lists him as the founder [11].

The place of founding is also given in two ways. The company and the main text of Italian Wikipedia both name Lugano, while the information box of Italian Wikipedia gives Massagno. German Wikipedia likewise names Massagno as the company's seat. The company itself lists its registered office at Via Pian Scairolo in Lugano-Pazzallo, with management offices in Collina d'Oro-Montagnola and its Swiss Business Operations unit, a team of 45, in Cadempino.

The company's own telling of its history starts with a crisis. In 1985, it says, IBSA had only a few dozen employees and a turnover of about 6 million Swiss francs, and was close to bankruptcy. What it did have was a laboratory and a production line. Licenziati's view, as the company presents it, was that small firms survive only by being smart: by solving problems that larger rivals consider too minor to bother with, through research aimed at patients' needs.

German Wikipedia attributes the growth that followed from the 1990s onward to three things: the 1985 change of ownership, a strategy of improving existing active substances through new dosage forms, and international expansion. New production plants were opened, subsidiaries were founded abroad and acquisitions were made.

The scale of that growth can be traced through the figures reported over time. German Wikipedia records roughly 1,000 employees and a turnover of about 300 million Swiss francs in 2006 [12]. Italian Wikipedia gives around 2,000 employees and more than 700 million francs for 2021, with 16 subsidiaries. The company now reports more than 2,500 employees and 20 subsidiaries. Its two main corporate pages give slightly different turnover figures: CHF 1.089 billion on the Swiss profile and a gross turnover of CHF 1.113 billion on the group page.

Several later milestones mark the group's widening activity beyond production. In 2012 it set up the IBSA Foundation for scientific research in Lugano, which promotes what it calls "Science for all", combining science communication with the humanities. The first IBSA Sustainability Report followed in 2015. In 2022 the group inaugurated cosmos, its largest production plant, after a complete renovation.

The company counts its 40-year history from Licenziati's arrival in 1985 rather than from the 1945 founding. Its recent cultural projects include "Eureka!", a documentary film presented as the story of an impossible invention, which the company featured in January 2026 and which appeared among the protagonists of the Premio Film Impresa in March 2026. Licenziati died in 2026, according to Italian Wikipedia, which gives his life dates as 1935 to 2026 [11].

No parent company or outside shareholder is documented for IBSA. The key ownership event on record is the 1985 transfer, which is described in three slightly different ways. The company speaks of Licenziati taking over a business in difficulty; Italian Wikipedia says he acquired it; and German Wikipedia calls it a management buy-out, meaning a purchase by the people running the firm [12]. German Wikipedia's information box, which reflects older data, lists Licenziati as chief executive and chairman of the board. How ownership and leadership have been arranged since his death is not documented.

IBSA says its philosophy rests on four pillars: the person, innovation, quality and responsibility. Its central idea is to make "drugs in the best form". Rather than searching mainly for new molecules, the company concentrates on known active substances and works on new dosage forms and delivery systems for them.

The group's mission statement puts this in patient terms, and it adds a line that sums up its self-image: "What drives the company is the patient, not the market." It also commits to returning value to the communities where it operates.

The current tagline on the company's Swiss homepage is "Shaping the future of human possibilities" [1]. Italian Wikipedia gives a different slogan, "Caring Innovation", which appears to be an older one [11].

The company describes itself as one of the largest operators worldwide in reproductive medicine and one of the world's leaders in products based on hyaluronic acid. Italian Wikipedia repeats both points, placing IBSA among the four largest companies globally in reproductive medicine.

Within dermatology, IBSA has built a portfolio based on hyaluronic acid obtained through what it describes as a patented and certified biofermentation process [8]. The company says this line is complemented by cosmetic products for skin irritated by wind, sun, cold, sweat, shaving, beauty treatments or tattoos.

These cosmetics are sold under the name ialugen Calm and come in two forms, a gel and a spray, both for face and body. Each contains 0.2 per cent hyaluronic acid [10]. The gel pairs it with vegetable glycerin and sorbitol and is fragrance-free, while the spray includes L-arginine and does contain fragrance. According to the company, both products are free of cortisone, parabens and colourants, and both are vegan. These are product-level claims for the ialugen Calm line, not statements about IBSA's wider range.

The aesthetic-medicine side of the business works differently. Its products are injectables administered by practitioners, not retail cosmetics. IBSA groups them under what it calls the Hydrolift concept and says they are developed with its patented Nahyco technology [9].

Hyaluronic acid is only one strand of the company's technical work. Italian Wikipedia credits IBSA with 90 patent families. It also mentions IBSA Film Tec, a thin film that dissolves in the mouth as a way of taking medicine, and a highly purified hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, an inactive ingredient used in medicines, developed with the ingredients company Roquette. Consumer health is also among the group's ten therapeutic areas.

Production is concentrated in Ticino. According to the company, the Collina d'Oro site makes and packs syrups, creams, ointments, oral liquids, tablets and capsules. The Lamone plant makes gonadotropins and progesterone, hormones used in fertility treatment, for the entire group, and Manno specialises in thyroid hormones. The largest site is cosmos, a 16,200-square-metre plant in the Pian Scairolo district between Lugano and Collina d'Oro. The company does not say at which site the ialugen Calm cosmetics are made. No third-party certifications for the cosmetic line are documented.

IBSA published its first Sustainability Report in 2015. Its current plan, #IBSA2030, is built around eight of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in the United Nations 2030 Agenda [5]. The company has also issued a sustainability manifesto, symbolised by a four-leaf clover. It cites four real-estate projects designed around energy efficiency and wellbeing, and two foundations along with a range of social-responsibility partnerships.

IBSA is active. Its Swiss homepage carried several news posts in September 2026, the most recent dated 28 September 2026, about the Narture 2026 congress on reproductive medicine in Rome. The group operates internationally, with country subsidiaries across Europe as well as in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States. Its legal name remains IBSA Institut Biochimique SA.
