Overview
IdHAIR is a professional haircare brand from Denmark, founded in 1986 in Aarhus and run today from a headquarters in Lystrup, near the city [3]. It began as a wholesale distributor of salon products and grew into one of the larger hair brands in Scandinavia, best known for its styling waxes. The company remains privately held and 100% Danish-owned by the Kjærgaard family.
The brand describes itself as a professional haircare company built on "high-performance formulas and creative freedom," supplying both salons and consumers across more than thirty export countries. Its products are styled under the tagline "Have a nice hair day."

Origin & founders
According to the company, the business started in 1986 in a small apartment in central Aarhus, working as a wholesaler (Danish grossist) of hairdressing products. The UK trade publication Salon Business reports the premises measured about 117 square metres and that the founder worked with a chemist to develop the IdHAIR Original Waxes, the brand's first product range [8].
The brand's own history page lists 1986 as the founding year. An editorial profile by Scandinavia Standard, published in May 2023, described IdHAIR as "celebrating their 35-year anniversary," which would point to a founding closer to 1988; the company's pages consistently state 1986 [7].
History & milestones
The wax range proved to be the turning point. The product launched in 2001 as "Id" Original Wax, and in 2008 the company rebranded to IdHAIR with a redesigned wax. The first major international order came in 1999, with Norway becoming the brand's first export market [8].
Several moves through the 2000s and 2010s expanded the company's reach and capabilities. In 2009 it acquired its own filling and production factory in Sweden, where its products are now mainly filled. In 2011 it relocated to its current 4,000-square-metre headquarters on Lægårdsvej in Lystrup and introduced the Elements series. The company says it grew from 13 to 31 export countries by 2015, the same year it launched its Pow'r and Niophlex lines.
The brand made two notable acquisitions. In 2013 it acquired the styling brand Ego Professional [2]. In 2018 it acquired sixteen Danish salons operating under the Poul M name and employed around 150 people at the time [2].
Ownership
IdHAIR is operated by IdHAIR Company A/S, a privately held Danish company (CVR 15233982). The company states it is 100% Danish-owned and that it was founded and is owned by the Kjærgaard family from the Egaa–Risskov area near Aarhus [3]. The brand's history page and ownership page describe the founding slightly differently — one names the 1986 founder, the other attributes founding and ownership to the family — but both, together with Salon Business and the company's legal records, point to the same family-led business rather than separate parties [8].
Philosophy & positioning
IdHAIR positions itself as a professional, family-owned brand shaped by what it calls "jysk jordnærhed," or Jutlandic down-to-earth values, with an emphasis on putting the customer first. The company says it exists "to inspire – and to make every day a nice hair day all around the world." Toward salon professionals, it frames itself as more than a supplier of hair products, describing a network of hairdressers supported by education programmes and courses.
The brand's stated audience is broad. Scandinavia Standard characterised its range as "salon-quality Scandinavian haircare at a great price," designed for hair types "from the fine and straight to the thick and curly" [7]. The line spans styling waxes, shampoos and conditioners, treatments, colour systems and a men's grooming range.
Products & innovation
The styling wax remains the brand's defining product. Salon Business reports that IdHAIR sells over a million styling pots a year and counts it among the biggest brands in Scandinavia [8]. The Extreme Titanium wax, a water-soluble formula, is described in editorial coverage as a best-seller across the region [7]. Products were at first sold only to hairdressers, but rising demand for the waxes led the company to add supermarket and online sales.
Beyond styling, IdHAIR develops salon chemistry under several named systems. It introduced its first ammonia-free permanent wave, Amino Wave, in 2012, and markets colour systems that it says use up to 70% less ammonia, alongside a demi-permanent colour line described as ammonia- and PPD-free. Its bond-rebuilding system is sold as Niophlex Rebond. The company also offers a fragrance-free line, Sensitive Xclusive, and a curl-focused range, Curly Xclusive.
Recognition
IdHAIR's Elements series received a Red Dot Design Award in 2011. In 2022 the Hemp Wax from its Black Xclusive line won the Best Male Product category at the Danish Beauty Award [7]. The brand was included in Scandinavia Standard's 2023 round-up of Scandinavian haircare brands, and Salon Business has profiled it as "a trustworthy, dynamic and forward thinking company" [8].
Sustainability
The company says sustainability is a priority, with a particular focus on recycling packaging and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Its measures include a rooftop solar installation with live energy-production monitoring at its offices and electric-vehicle charging stations open to employees, visitors and the public. IdHAIR also lists social-responsibility partnerships, among them the Danish Cancer Society and a vocational-training initiative for disadvantaged young people.
Current status
IdHAIR is active. It runs a direct-to-consumer store alongside professional and salon distribution, and its history page records multiple product launches in 2023 and 2024, including the Curly Xclusive, Niophlex Rebond, Obsessed Haircare and Creative ranges. The company reports more than forty employees and exports to over thirty countries, with its core markets in Scandinavia.
