Overview
Il Profvmo is an Italian niche perfume house founded in 1997 by the perfumer Silvana Casoli [1]. Its first fragrance, Chocolat, is the scent the company still describes as its emblem, and the brand traces its beginnings to a small laboratory in Reggio Emilia, in northern Italy. Il Profvmo is owned by Dispar SpA, a Rome-based distributor of Italian and international perfumery. Third-party writers often spell the name "Il Profumo".
The brand's current operating status is unclear. Its official website remains online and lists its collections, but as of October 2026 it carried an undated notice that new orders were temporarily suspended because of logistical issues. The perfume database Parfumo lists new releases as recent as 2024, while the most recent launch covered in the fragrance press dates from 2017.
Origin & founders
Il Profvmo's story centres on Silvana Casoli, who is described as the brand's founder and nose, meaning its in-house perfumer, by both the fragrance blog CaFleureBon and the retailer Luckyscent [9]. According to Luckyscent's perfumer profile, Casoli is an Italian cosmetologist who trained as a herbalist at the University of Urbino. She later moved into aromatherapy and then perfumery, which she began practising in 1988 [13].
The company's own account is more lyrical. It places the start of the brand in an atelier tucked among the stone walls of an old Italian town, a laboratory of scents where Casoli worked with rare essences and raw materials and created Chocolat. The brand's history page presents Il Profvmo as an artistic perfumery born in a small laboratory in Reggio Emilia. The company links Casoli's style to the sunny countryside of her childhood, with its olive trees, ripe fruit and flowers. It says her palette was later shaped by travels to Morocco, Peru, China and Saint-Tropez, places it calls a kaleidoscope of scents.
Casoli herself has pointed to nature, and to the wind in particular, as her starting point. Speaking to CaFleureBon in 2015, she described wind as the element that carries all smells and is present "whenever inspiration becomes creation".
History & milestones
The company dates its first fragrance, Chocolat, to 1997 and treats that year as the start of the brand. Chocolat grew out of a childhood memory: Il Profvmo describes chocolate as a treat from Casoli's early years and a comfort in difficult moments, and says years of research and experiment went into turning that memory into a perfume. The scent opens with mandarin, moves to a warm cocoa heart and settles on a spicy nutmeg base. According to the company, it went on to win admirers from Paris to New York and Tokyo.
The brand's own timeline then moves to 2004, when it lists two launches. Aria di Mare is a sunny, light, salty composition meant to recall a summer walk on the beach, with tiare flowers, a marine heart and powdery musk. Ambre d'Or combines amber, smoky myrrh and honey, and the company frames it as a scene from the Thousand and One Nights [4]. Sources differ on the first of these. Il Profvmo dates Aria di Mare to 2004, while Parfumo lists it as a 2002 release [12]. Parfumo also records several other early titles, including Café Vert and Amour (both 1998), Chocolat Amère (2000), and Touaregh and Macadam (both 2003).
Fleur de Bambù followed in 2011. The brand calls it an ode to the purity of Asia, built on tea blossom, an aquatic bamboo heart and a soft almond note of lotus flower. In the same period the catalogue widened considerably: Parfumo lists Patchouli Noir (2006), Pioggia Salata (2009) and Nuda (2010) among the releases of these years.
In 2015 the collection was shown at The Elements Showcase/Capsule exhibition, where editors from CaFleureBon first encountered it. The same coverage refers to a US arm, Il Profvmo USA, which offered readers a discovery kit of the brand's samples.
In December 2017 the brand marked its twentieth anniversary with Silvana, a fragrance named after its founder [10]. Brand copy quoted by the blog Now Smell This describes it as a blend of pink peppercorn, sweet iris and white musk. Parfumo lists a run of later releases, among them Romeo (2018), Fleur de Cerisier (2019), Ambre Nocturne (2021), Ylang d'Or (2023) and Myrrhe Noble (2024). The last two were among the fragrances featured on the brand's homepage in 2026.
Ownership
According to its official website, Il Profvmo is a brand of Dispar SpA [1]. The site describes Dispar as a company that distributes Italian and international high perfumery, and the newsletter sign-up on the brand's pages is run in Dispar's name. When Dispar took ownership of the brand has not been made public, and no acquisition history is documented.
This leaves two different answers to the question of where the brand is based. The official website gives a contact address in Rome, on Via Francesco Tumiati, under Dispar. The brand's own history page and Parfumo both place its origins in Reggio Emilia, with Parfumo stating that Casoli has run the Il Profvmo brand there since 1997 [11]. This article follows Rome as the current operating address and Reggio Emilia as the place where the brand was founded.
Philosophy & positioning
Il Profvmo presents its perfumes as personal expressions of their creator. Casoli says she leaves "a piece of myself in each bottle" and that every scent embodies a facet of her soul, whether intense, discreet or mischievous [3]. The company describes her career as a life dedicated to awakening the senses, and calls the brand's identity unique and nonconformist.
The brand places itself squarely in niche perfumery, a label also used by Now Smell This, which calls it an "Italian niche line". Il Profvmo describes its perfumes as works of olfactory art and, on its website, says it has transformed the world of niche perfume and has been part of international artistic perfumery since 1997. It also says its fragrances can provide up to 24 hours of scent on the skin.
On raw materials, the company says it uses natural and wild-grown ingredients, working with fragrance building blocks and accords to compose its scents. It singles out Florentine iris, or orris, which it notes is known among perfumers as "blue gold". Other ingredients the brand highlights include black carnation, Suriname rose, Tibetan blue poppy, ginger, Madagascar vanilla, Mediterranean mandarin and oud.
Products & innovation
The range is built almost entirely around eau de parfum. The company counts 24 perfumes across three collections: The Multifacets Composition, The Minimalist Fragrances and The Extraordinary Florals. Parfumo, which also tracks discontinued titles, lists around 50 fragrances in total. Beyond perfume, the brand sells a Chocolat body cream and an Aria di Mare scented candle, both drawn from its best-known scents, as well as a discovery box of samples.
Chocolat remains the reference point of the line. The company calls it the pivot of Il Profvmo, and several later releases carry the same name, including Chocolat Amère, Chocolat Frais (2006) and Chocolat Bàmbola (2011), according to Parfumo. Other titles in the line include Musc Bleu, Vanille Bourbon, Cortigiana, Quai des Lices, Black Dianthus, Coquelicot and Ginger. Twelve of the fragrances, from Chocolat to Fleur de Bambù, made up the discovery kit offered through Il Profvmo USA in 2015.
Voile Blanche, which Parfumo dates to 2014, shows the brand's habit of building scents around a place or a moment. It was inspired by a warm day in Saint-Tropez, and its listed notes of meerschaum, wild jasmine, hoya, sand lily, white sand and flax flowers mix familiar florals with more abstract, mineral ideas. Aria di Mare and Fleur de Bambù follow the same pattern, each described by the company through a remembered landscape rather than a list of ingredients alone.
Recognition
Il Profvmo's press coverage has come mainly from specialist fragrance blogs rather than mainstream fashion media, and no awards are documented. In October 2015 CaFleureBon reviewed Voile Blanche, describing it as a breezy, slightly salty floral skin scent. The reviewer found that the brand's perfumes stayed close to the skin while lasting for many hours, and disclosed that the samples had been supplied by Il Profvmo [9]. Now Smell This reported the launch of Silvana two years later.
The brand also makes notable claims about its clientele. Its history page says its fragrances have seduced "the Pope, Madonna and even Sting" [3]. Luckyscent's profile of Casoli goes further, stating that she created bespoke fragrances for Madonna and King Juan Carlos of Spain, and a one-off fragrance for Pope Benedict XVI [13]. These accounts come from the brand and from a retailer that sells perfume; neither has been independently documented in the press.
Current status
Il Profvmo's status as of October 2026 is unclear. Its website is maintained in five languages and lists its collections, and the homepage features recent fragrances such as Myrrhe Noble and Ylang d'Or. At the same time, the site carries a notice in Italian and English stating that the creation of new orders is temporarily suspended because of logistical issues [1]. The notice is undated, and the site's footer carries a 2023 copyright date. According to Parfumo, the brand released about one perfume a year on average over the previous decade [11]. No public explanation has been given of whether the suspension reflects a short-term problem or a wider change in the business.
