Summary

Overview

Innoxa is a French pharmacy beauty brand founded in Paris in 1920 by François Debat, a dermatologist and pharmacist [2]. Its name comes from the word innocuité — harmlessness, after the Latin maxim primum non nocere, "do no harm" — and the company traces a single commitment back to its origins: respect for sensitive skin. The brand is sold chiefly through French pharmacies and remains active, with a current line spanning makeup, skincare and nail care.

Long associated with what the trade press calls classic French pharmacy beauty, Innoxa has changed hands several times in recent years. After passing through Omega Pharma and Visiomed subsidiaries, it was acquired in 2020 by LJV Capital, the vehicle of investor Frédéric Poux. The brand's own site now credits Laboratoires Geman as its operating entity [3].

Origin and founders

Innoxa was created by François Debat (1882–1956), who trained first as a pharmacist and later as a physician, doing dermatological work during the First World War [6]. According to the company, the brand's earliest product was a dermatological salve, followed in the 1930s by cleansing milks for the face. The name itself encodes the founding idea: Innoxa derives from innocuité, framed by the brand around the medical principle of doing no harm.

There is some divergence in the record over exactly when the brand began. Innoxa and most trade coverage date the founding to 1920, the year the Société des Laboratoires Innoxa was incorporated in Paris [2]. The beauty-history reference site Cosmetics and Skin, however, documents Innoxa-branded products — Lait Innoxa, Poudre Innoxa, Cold Cream Innoxa — recorded from as early as 1911, several years before the formal company existed [6]. The 1920 incorporation is treated as the canonical corporate founding year.

History and milestones

In its first decades the brand expanded well beyond France. Cosmetics and Skin records Innoxa products reaching markets including England, Russia, Argentina and Cuba before the First World War, with importing into the United Kingdom beginning in 1921 and branches or agencies established across Europe and beyond by the mid-1920s [6]. A separate export milestone is dated to 1933, when Innoxa products were first shipped to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa — the origin of the brand's Commonwealth branches [9]. Those international operations later developed independently of the French company.

Among the brand's enduring products are the Nacrée cream and the Gouttes Bleues, blue eye drops launched in 1950 that trade press describes as a long-running bestseller. In the modern era Innoxa has reoriented toward natural formulation, introducing its first biosourced nail polish in 2017 and a complete biosourced makeup range, Belle & Good Nature, in 2020.

Ownership

Innoxa's recent ownership has shifted repeatedly. Visiomed acquired both Innoxa and the makeup house T. LeClerc from Omega Pharma subsidiaries in 2018, then divested them to refocus on its healthcare business [7]. In 2020 the two brands were bought by LJV Capital, headed by Frédéric Poux, in a deal effective 29 February 2020; the purchase was reported by trade titles including WWD [10] and BeautyMatter [7].

There is a documented discrepancy over the current parent. Trade coverage of the 2020 transaction names LJV Capital as the acquirer [7], while the present-day Innoxa website attributes its copyright to Laboratoires Geman [3] — most plausibly the operating company under LJV's ownership. The two are not necessarily in conflict, but the sources name different entities.

Philosophy and positioning

Innoxa positions itself as a high-tolerance brand for sensitive skin, summed up in its tagline, "Le respect des peaux sensibles au cœur de notre histoire" (respect for sensitive skin at the heart of our story). The company frames its values around innocuité and bienveillance — harmlessness and kindness — and states that its products are formulated without parabens or phenoxyethanol and tested under dermatological supervision, with certain eye products additionally ophthalmologist-tested. The brand describes itself as emblematic of French pharmacy, citing more than a century of presence in that channel.

Products and innovation

The current catalogue covers eye, lip, complexion and nail products alongside skincare and beauty accessories. Nail care is a notable focus: the brand markets polishes in dozens of shades together with a silicon-based protective base coat and a biosourced remover oil, all presented as suitable for sensitive or damaged nails.

The Belle & Good Nature range, launched in 2020, is the brand's biosourced line. According to an editorial review of the range, it replaces synthetic compounds with raw materials of natural and renewable origin such as potato, cassava, corn, soybean and cotton, with the line priced under 18 euros — described by the reviewer as a commitment to making more environmentally minded products available to a wider public [8]. Manufacturing is stated to be in France.

Recognition and press

Coverage of Innoxa in this period centres on its 2020 change of ownership. BeautyMatter and WWD reported the LJV Capital acquisition, with BeautyMatter characterising Innoxa and T. LeClerc as "sleeping beauties" the new owner intended to revive, refocusing first on France and Belgium before pursuing expansion abroad and online [7]. The Belle & Good Nature line drew a separate editorial review highlighting its biosourced formulation and accessible pricing.

Current status

Innoxa is active. It operates a transactional French-language e-commerce site selling its current makeup, skincare and accessory ranges, and reports distribution through 6,500 partner pharmacies in France [1]; trade press at the time of the 2020 acquisition put the brand in roughly 6,000 pharmacies and parapharmacies, primarily in France and Belgium. Having marked its centenary in 2020, the brand presents itself under the name "Innoxa Paris 1920."
