The exact starting point of Ivybands is recorded two different ways. For the Ivybands product, the documented record points to 2014: the earliest archived version of ivybands.com is already a live online shop in January 2014, the operating sole proprietorship was registered that month, and the German patent for the velvet lining was filed on 9 April 2014 [6]. 2014 therefore stands as the brand's documented launch year, allowing for the company's broader "late 2000s" framing.

The founder credit is similarly split between two members of the Sismanoglu family. In early 2014 the business operated as a sole proprietorship named "IvyBands.com," whose imprint listed Muzaffer Sismanoglu as managing director [3]. Özkan Sismanoglu appears as the sole inventor on the 2014 patent and the trademark filing, and later as managing director of the incorporated IVY GmbH [6]. The relationship between the two is not documented in the sources; Özkan Sismanoglu, as the named inventor and long-term managing director, is generally credited as the brand's founder.

The signature product is a hairband lined on the inside with velvet, intended to grip the hair without slipping or needing constant readjustment. The company describes the bands as holding "in the truest sense of the word," staying put through any activity [2]. The construction — an outer textile band, a velvet inner coating and an elastic fastening — was the subject of a German patent application (DE102014005209A1) filed in 2014, alongside a related utility model [13]. Both have since lapsed; the patent record lists its status as ceased [6], meaning the velvet-lining method is no longer legally protected.

Around this core, Ivybands offers a wide catalogue of designs: solid colours, patterns, glitter finishes, animal prints and reflective models aimed at running in low light. The range spans several widths, from a narrow "Super Thin" band to a standard and an extra-wide version, plus a size-adjustable children's line. The brand positions itself in the entry-priced fashion-accessory tier rather than as a luxury label.

A trade-retailer blog introducing the bands claimed the anti-slip coating was "developed by Harvard University graduates and tested by elite athletes worldwide." This is brand-PR copy that the sources do not substantiate; the patent filings name only Özkan Sismanoglu of Cologne as inventor, with no Harvard connection on record.

Ivybands is wholly owned by IVY GmbH, a Cologne-based company whose stated purpose is the manufacture and distribution of fashion articles, sporting goods and accessories [8]. The brand began as the sole proprietorship "IvyBands.com" before being incorporated under IVY GmbH, with Özkan Sismanoglu as managing director. According to the German business register, the company's registered office was moved from Cologne to Münster in 2020, and a later filing records a further move to Berlin [8]. Across these changes, Ivybands has remained one of six sister brands in the IVY portfolio.

An EU trademark application for "Ivybands," filed in 2016, was refused in 2018 [7] — a common outcome for marks judged too descriptive — so the ® symbol used on the products refers to a German national registration rather than an EU-wide one.

The brand's own ivybands.com domain, however, has lapsed and is parked for sale, with operations now centred on the parent portal and marketplace channels. There is no Wikipedia entry for either Ivybands or IVY GmbH, consistent with a regional brand active mainly in German-speaking markets, the United Kingdom and parts of the Nordics rather than a global household name.
