Summary

Overview

JETTE is a German design and lifestyle brand founded in 1997 by the designer Jette Joop [5]. Built around her industrial-design background, it spans jewelry, fashion, accessories, home goods and a fragrance line, and remains active from its German base. For beauty buyers, the brand is known chiefly through its perfumes, a feminine fragrance range that Jette Joop launched in the mid-2000s and that continues to be sold across the DACH region and through beauty retailers in Sweden.

The fragrance line operates under JETTE GmbH and is distinct from JOOP!, the fashion house founded by Jette Joop's father, Wolfgang Joop, whose fragrance and cosmetics licenses are held separately [6].

Origin and founders

Jette Joop trained as a designer before launching the company that carries her name. She studied industrial design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, then worked in New York for the designers Barry Kieselstein-Cord and Polo Ralph Lauren. In 1997 she established the JETTE Group in Germany, with operations spread across Hamburg, Berlin and Potsdam [5].

According to fragrance-industry sources, Jette Joop is the daughter of Wolfgang Joop, the founder of the fashion house JOOP!, and runs JETTE as a separate venture from that company [6]. The brand's own materials present it as the work of a single designer rather than part of a larger group, and identify J.P.R. Media GmbH as the producer behind the current website and licensing.

History and milestones

The company began in 1997 as a multi-category design house. It entered the fragrance market in 2005 with its first perfume, simply called "Jette," developed with the perfumer Olivier Cresp [6]. The following year that scent received a Duftstars Award, the German fragrance industry's annual prize [3]. Over the following years the line expanded with further women's fragrances, and the brand reports collaborations with perfumers including Michel Almairac, Olivier Cresp and Julien Rasquinet.

Beyond fragrance, JETTE has marked milestones across its other categories, including a "Store of the Year" recognition for its Berlin concept store in 2011 and several design and fashion awards for Jette Joop herself in 2016 [3].

Philosophy and positioning

JETTE frames itself around what Jette Joop calls a "crossover design" approach — applying ideas from architecture and automotive design to jewelry and other products. "It allows us to think in a networked way, and that leads to extraordinary design products," she is quoted as saying [5]. The brand summarizes its character with four words: young, modern, sustainable and creative.

Affordability is a stated part of the positioning. Jette Joop describes her aim as making design that brings people enjoyment while staying within reach: "My creations should bring people joy, beautify their everyday life and still remain affordable. No more and no less" [2]. The company also dates its identity to 1997, presenting JETTE as standing for "strong, self-determined and independent women" since its founding; some of its marketing instead refers loosely to "more than 25 years" or "over 20 years" of activity, phrasing consistent with the 1997 date rather than a competing founding year [2].

Products and innovation

The brand's range covers fashion, accessories, jewelry, fragrance, home and living, and industrial design. Jewelry is a core category, and JETTE states that its pieces are made with responsibly sourced metals and recycled silver content. Its current fragrance offering includes JETTE DREAM, described by the company as a floral, fruity scent in a deep-blue bottle, and JETTE LOVE, presented as a floral and exotic fragrance [4]. Jewelry is also sold through a retail partnership with CHRIST Juweliere.

On sustainability, the company names people, design and responsible practice as central pillars, citing responsible sourcing of materials and recyclable packaging; it notes these commitments apply mainly to its jewelry rather than the fragrance line [1].

Recognition

JETTE and Jette Joop have received a number of German industry awards. The "Jette" fragrance won a Duftstars Award in 2006. Jette Joop was recognized with the look! Women of the Year Award and the Bild der Frau Fashion Award in 2016, and earlier with the Leading Ladies Award in 2009; the brand's Berlin concept store was named Store of the Year in 2011 [3].
