Summary

Overview

JLD, styled in store as Jean Louis David Paris, is a French range of home hairstyling and grooming appliances — hair dryers, straighteners, curlers, clippers and razors. It carries the name of the late French hairdresser Jean-Louis David (1934–2019) and trades on his salon heritage, positioning itself as professional results brought into the home.

The brand's own history is a question of where one starts counting. The JLD Beauty site dates the name to 1961, the year Jean-Louis David opened his first salon [2]. The product line sold today, however, is more recent: business databases record the home-appliance venture as a 2017 launch under the French company that operates it [13]. Both framings are accurate to different things — the heritage of the name versus the age of the appliance business that now uses it.

Origin and founders

Jean-Louis David was born in Paris in 1934 into a family of hairdressers and trained at the Gabriel Garland salon, where, while still in his twenties, he styled the actress Kim Novak — an encounter credited with raising his profile beyond France [9]. He opened his first salon on Avenue de Wagram in Paris in 1961.

In 1970 he introduced the layered cut, the dégradé, a technique meant to add movement and to be easily reproduced by his stylists [9]. He formally established the Jean Louis David group in 1976 and, after a consulting trip to the United States, became one of the first French hairdressers to build a franchised salon business. The network grew internationally; by the mid-1990s the company counted several hundred salons in France and roughly 700 worldwide.

History and milestones

The salon group changed hands twice in the 2000s. In 2002 the business was sold to the American company Regis Corporation, with David's son Jean-Christophe taking a leadership role [9]. In 2007 it was acquired by the Provalliance group, the salon company led by the French hairdresser Franck Provost, who described David as "a visionary, an innovator, a creator and an exceptional businessman" [9]. Jean-Louis David died in Épalinges, Switzerland, in 2019, at the age of 85 [8].

Ownership

Ownership of the JLD name today runs in two layers. The Jean Louis David salon brand has belonged to the Provalliance group since 2007. The JLD Beauty appliance line and its website, jldbeauty.com, are operated under licence by ABC DISTRIBUTION SAS, a company based in Bonneuil-sur-Marne, near Paris, and led by Rabah Chabane [7]. The site is built on Shopify and after-sales service runs through the operator's own consumer channel.

Philosophy and positioning

JLD presents itself as a way to bring salon technique home. Its stated aim is "to reduce heat damage and offer efficient, fast and hair-friendly styling," and the company frames its appliances around the slogans "Professional results at home" and "Style at the heart of our thinking" [2]. The brand describes its sensibility, in its French-language material, as "rock, urban, trendy and sexy," and ties the line to a stated legacy of "hair freedom" and continual innovation. The store tagline is "Make a difference" [1].

Products and innovation

The range is built around styling and grooming hardware rather than formulas, and is marketed for both women and men. Featured products include the AEROSTYL hair dryer, the 360 XTREME Head Shaver, the six-in-one Ultimate Grooming Kit, the compact Little Styler straightener and the Vapor Styler, a two-in-one steam straightener [5]. The catalogue is organised into hair dryers, straighteners, curlers, clippers and a travel-sized range, with pricing aimed at the mass market rather than the premium tier. The brand does not publish detailed ingredient, technology or certification information on its site.

Current status

JLD is active. As of mid-2026 the e-commerce site is operational, with products in stock and current euro pricing for European distribution, and the brand maintains accounts on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook under the handle jld__beauty. One channel is quieter: the site's news and blog section carries no posts, stating "There are no posts yet" [4], so visible activity rests on the store and social media rather than editorial output. The products are distributed in the Nordic markets through retail feeds.
