Summary

Overview

John Masters Organics is an American organic hair-care and skincare brand founded in New York. The company traces its start to 1994, when New York hairstylist John Masters began making gentler personal-care products in his SoHo apartment [2]. What started as handmade items grew into a global line spanning hair care, skincare, body care and aromatherapy, and the brand is often described in the trade press as an early figure in clean hair care.

The brand remains active, but its footprint has shifted sharply. After a series of private-equity owners, it is now controlled by the Japanese firm Aspirant Group, and Japan accounts for the bulk of its business. In January 2025 the company closed its direct e-commerce and retail operations in the United States and Canada, while continuing to trade in Japan and dozens of other markets.

Origin & founders

John Masters was a leading New York stylist who, according to the company, turned a personal interest in healthy, holistic living into a line of gentler personal-care products. The brand dates its founding to 1994 and places its origin in Masters' apartment in SoHo [2]. The Japanese-language Wikipedia entry instead gives 1991 and notes that Masters had experimented with essential oils in his home kitchen during the 1980s [6]; the company's own 1994 date is corroborated by industry coverage [7]. The earlier figure most likely reflects those pre-launch experiments rather than the official start of the brand.

A frequently cited milestone followed in 1995, when Masters opened what the company describes as the world's first "clean air" salon, free from toxins and harsh chemicals. Several retailers and trade outlets describe him as a pioneer of organic hair care, a characterisation that recurs across editorial coverage of the brand.

History & milestones

The brand built its early US presence through natural-products retail, entering Whole Foods Markets across the United States in 2005. Its international turn came in 2007, when Yoshimune Noda and Maiko Noda brought the brand into Japan, a market that would eventually become larger than its home one [9].

Ownership then passed through private equity. In 2016 the British firm Permira Advisers acquired a majority stake, in a deal reported at an enterprise value of about JPY 37 billion, or USD 336 million [7]. By the time of a later acquisition, Japan generated roughly half of revenue and the company operated around 40 directly owned stores there, alongside wholesale distribution in 30 to 40 other countries.

The brand marked its 30-year anniversary in 2024 and launched a baby-care category the same year. In January 2025 it shut its US and Canadian direct operations, ending online orders on 15 January and winding down customer support over the following weeks.

Ownership

John Masters Organics has changed hands several times. Permira acquired control in 2016 and exited in 2020 to the Noda family, the brand's longtime Japanese partners [9]. In 2022 the Japanese private-equity firm Aspirant Group acquired a controlling stake, in a deal announced in June of that year [9]. Tokyo now serves as the global headquarters; the United States operation had been run from San Francisco until the 2025 closure, and the brand's original home was New York.

Under Aspirant, the company reported EBITDA of roughly JPY 1 billion for the twelve months ended September 2022, up from about JPY 500 million the year before [9].

Philosophy & positioning

The company frames itself around "transparency, integrity, and environmental responsibility," and states a vision that "clean beauty isn't just a trend, but a standard." Its stated mission is to inspire people to nurture their well-being while, in its words, harnessing the power of nature to create safe, effective and sustainable products.

Commercially, the brand has occupied a middle ground that proved difficult to hold. Trade coverage of the 2025 US closure described it as too expensive for mass-market shoppers yet lacking the appeal of newer high-end clean hair-care rivals [8], a positioning squeeze that Aspirant cited when it judged the North American market economically unviable.

Products & innovation

The range centres on hair care and extends into skincare and body care. Frequently named products include the Hydrate & Protect Hair Milk with Rose & Apricot, a Leave-in Conditioning Mist with Green Tea & Calendula, an Overnight Hair Mask with plant-based keratin, and the Lip Calm balm. The company positions its formulas as certified organic and free of a long list of excluded ingredients such as parabens and phthalates, with sulfate-free shampoos among its core products.

Controversies

In 2017 the company carried out a voluntary recall of 38 products across 26 SKUs, mostly shampoos and conditioners, after it emerged that items marketed as "100% plant-derived" and "silicone-free" contained undisclosed silicone and other synthetic compounds [6]. The company attributed the problem to manufacturing irregularities at a US contract manufacturer and issued a public apology [9].

The 2025 withdrawal from the United States and Canada also drew industry attention, framed less as a scandal than as a strategic retreat by a brand caught between market segments [8].

Current status

The brand is active and trading globally, though no longer through its own US and Canadian channels. Following the January 2025 closure of direct operations in those markets, products remained available there via Amazon, while the company continued to operate in Japan and 30 to 40 other countries under Aspirant Group [7]. The Japanese division maintains an active online store and multiple retail locations [5], and the brand is sold across the Nordic markets.
