Jorum Studio

Jorum Studio is an independent fragrance house based in Edinburgh, Scotland, founded in 2019 by the Scottish perfumer Euan McCall and the designer Chloe Mullen [1][8]. The company formulates and manufactures its perfumes in-house, drawing much of its inspiration from the Scottish landscape, and describes its work as "modern, poetic fragrances that capture the beauty of nature with an unconventional spirit."

The brand remains active. It trades from two physical stores, in Edinburgh and London, distributes to more than 30 international markets, and was still publishing journal entries and announcing collections into 2026 [6].

The Jorum Studio brand dates to 2019, but its roots run back further. McCall first established a perfumery business, Jorum Laboratories, working as a freelance perfumer and consultant who formulated and manufactured fragrances for clients before launching his own label. The discrepancy concerns the precursor laboratory rather than Jorum Studio itself, whose 2019 launch is not in dispute.

According to The Perfume Society, McCall's interest in fragrance began in childhood, encouraged by grandparents whose horticulture business gave him an early love of aroma, and was crystallised by a family holiday to Grasse — the historic perfume town in southern France — at the age of eight. Rather than attending a formal perfumery school, he pursued self-directed study and worked alongside several perfumers, among them a Highlands-based mentor, the Irish master perfumer George Dodd; when Dodd died in 2020, McCall became custodian of his raw-materials archive [9]. Jorum Studio launched in 2019 with its inaugural collection, Progressive Botany Vol. I, and an early pop-up perfumery at Jenners, the Edinburgh department store. In 2020 the company introduced the Jorum Craft Award, a recurring grant intended to support the development of a maker's creative practice. "Not only being perfumer-led but designing and manufacturing all products in-house means that we can be incredibly creative and authentic," McCall has said [8]. The company frames this independence as a way to take creative risks in an industry it sees as becoming more risk-averse and standardised.

Scotland is the brand's central reference point. The team gathers scent impressions from woodlands, peat bogs and coastlines, and several compositions are tied to specific places — Scottish Odyssey, for instance, includes fragrances drawn from Glencoe and the Strathmore Valley. McCall has also reflected on a distinctly northern sensory world, describing the region's "smell landscape" as "muted, more intimate and slightly flatter but perhaps denser" than elsewhere [9]. The studio positions itself in the modern luxury segment under the line "Modern Luxury Perfume — Made in Scotland."

The range is built around perfume and home fragrance. It spans Eau de Parfum collections, including Progressive Botany Vol. I and Selective Memory; Extrait de Parfum lines such as Scottish Odyssey, Mainline and the limited TIME release; and a line of candles. Individual fragrances that recur across the brand's materials include Arborist, Boswellia Scotia and Spiritcask, the latter a later addition to Scottish Odyssey. Progressive Botany Vol. I is described as an investigation of native Scottish botanicals.

The company works with both natural and synthetic materials, stating that it does not discriminate between "natural origin and manufactured." Production runs in small batches, typically a few weeks per run, with volumes ranging from roughly one hundred to a thousand units. Jorum Studio also commissions artistic collaborations alongside its collections, working with Scottish photographers, craftspeople and the glass artist Juli Bolaños-Durman, whose Wild Flowers project paired sculpture with scent.

The company states that none of its products are tested on animals and that it does not sponsor animal testing anywhere. It says it aims to minimise packaging, uses recyclable or biodegradable materials where possible, and sources glass bottles and paper packaging made in the United Kingdom. On ingredients, it describes sourcing from responsible suppliers and fair-trade co-operatives. Jorum Studio is not marketed as strictly vegan: its ethics page notes that three animal by-products — beeswax absolute, hyraceum and beach-combed ambergris — may be used, while stating they are rarely used and "currently do not feature in any Jorum Studio product."
