Overview
Jovoy is a French perfume house based in Paris, founded in 1923 by the Parisian perfumer Blanche Arvoy and revived in 2006 by the entrepreneur François Hénin [3]. The original house belonged to the fashionable world of the Roaring Twenties; after fading around the time of the Great Depression and the Second World War, it was relaunched as a contemporary niche-fragrance label and boutique. Today the company operates from rue de Castiglione in Paris and also keeps a London presence, and it is known among fragrance professionals as the "Embassy of Rare Perfumes" [7].
The name itself records a small piece of family history: Jovoy is a contraction of "Joe", Blanche Arvoy's nickname, and "Voy", taken from her husband Esteban Arvoy [5].
Origin & founders
Blanche Arvoy created the house in 1923, in the middle of the period the French call the Années folles. The early Jovoy was a creature of its time. Its perfumes came in whimsical, animal-shaped bottles — among them Allez hop!, topped with Dalmatians, and Gardez-moi, modelled as a cat — and the brand built a following in Parisian society. According to editorial accounts, the original shop on Rue de la Paix became known for opulent scents presented in Lalique crystal bottles.
The house did not survive the changing decades. Editorial histories describe how the economic downturn of the 1930s, followed by the Second World War, ended the original line, and Jovoy faded into what one account calls "a mere footnote in fragrance history" [5].
History & milestones
Jovoy remained dormant for decades until François Hénin acquired and relaunched it. Most sources, including the company's own site, place this revival in 2006 [2]; one later profile instead dates the relaunch to 2010, apparently referring to a subsequent stage in the brand's development [8]. Hénin had come to perfume by an unusual route, having spent time in Vietnam exploring raw materials and setting up a distillation operation, and having worked in the perfume trade in the Grasse region of southern France [6].
Rather than reissue Arvoy's compositions, Hénin chose to build a new range of eau de parfum for contemporary wearers. As part of the revival he opened a large independent store of artistic perfumery near Place Vendôme [5]. By 2011 the house had become known among industry professionals, perfume lovers and journalists as the "Embassy of rare perfumes in Paris" [7].
Philosophy & positioning
Jovoy presents itself as the opposite of standardised, global perfumery. On its own site the house describes itself as standing "for the dream of exceptional perfumery, part of a notable French tradition and far from ostentation and elitism", an "accessible dream" it wishes to share with people who want "pure fragrances arising out of emotion". The company says each of its creations carries a story drawn from a personal meeting or experience, and that the perfumes are composed by independent noses.
Hénin has framed the revived brand around the present rather than its heritage. He has said his aim is to "make perfumes for my contemporaries", with each fragrance revealing "a facet of the world I live in, exactly as Blanche did in her time" [3], and has described scent as a personal extension of the wearer rather than a mass-market product [6]. The boutique is positioned for Parisians and connoisseurs seeking individual signature fragrances not found in mainstream stores.
Products & innovation
The revived Jovoy line is built on eau de parfum, typically offered in several sizes. Among its signature releases are Ambre Premier, an amber composition with rose, vanilla, musk and patchouli; Psychédélique, a smoky, patchouli-led scent; and La Liturgie des Heures, built around incense and myrrh [3]. The wider collection has included names such as Ha Long Bay, Private Label and Fire at Will.
Beyond its own label, Jovoy operates as a curator of independent perfumery. Its Paris boutique on rue de Castiglione — described by The Perfume Society as "a scent mecca" [3] — sells niche fragrances from many other houses; the company states that it carries around 130 houses and more than 2,800 references [2].
Current status
Jovoy is an active house. It continues to run its niche-perfume boutique on rue de Castiglione in Paris, alongside its London presence and online store, and maintains its own Jovoy-label fragrance line whose releases span the 2010s and into the 2020s.
