Summary

Overview

Keiko Mecheri is an American niche perfume house founded in California in 1997 [5]. Created by the artist and pianist Keiko Mecheri after she left careers in high-tech and graphic design, the company set up its first studio on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles and has since produced more than sixty fragrances. It remains independent and active, with a direct online store and distribution through specialist niche retailers, and its debut scent, Loukhoum, is still described as a cult bestseller [6].

The house presents itself around a single idea: the parallel between Grasse, the historic perfume town in the south of France, and California. According to the company, both share mild climates, citrus groves, jasmine and a bohemian cultural streak, and its fragrances are handcrafted in Grasse while being conceived in Los Angeles — a duality captured in its tagline, "Inspired in Grasse • Made in California."

Origin & founders

Keiko Mecheri was born in Atami, Japan — a coastal resort area sometimes called the "Japanese Riviera" — and raised in California, where she trained as an artist and pianist and later studied art at UCLA and in Europe [5]. In 1997 she founded the company with her partner. The brand's own account names only "her partner" without identifying him; third-party fragrance references record the co-founder as Kamel Mecheri [5][1].

The business did not begin as a perfumery. It first operated under the name Bazaar des Senteurs, selling body-care products and scented candles, before three early scents — Hanae, Te En and Loukhoum — shifted its focus toward perfume [5]. As that change took hold, the company adopted the founder's own name.

History & milestones

The turning point was Loukhoum, an intensely sweet composition inspired by the Turkish confection rahat loukhoum, built around rose, almond and honey. Sources disagree on its exact debut: Fragrantica's perfume database and Parfumo date the fragrance to 1997, while one biographical passage on Fragrantica describes it as launched "in 1998" [12][6]. Either way, it became the house's best-known scent and, by several niche-fragrance accounts, a cult favourite that still anchors the range [6].

Further releases followed across the next two decades, among them Passiflora in 2000, Musc Nobilis in 2012, Bohèmes in 2015 and The Beautiful Ones in 2018. The collection has grown to roughly eighty fragrances [4].

Philosophy & positioning

Keiko Mecheri positions itself as a luxury niche house that blends tradition with innovation [11]. The company says its perfumes are developed on fine-art principles and built from the highest-quality natural ingredients, a conviction it traces to the founder's belief that a fragrance's character depends on the materials used to make it [3]. The specialist retailer Luckyscent describes the line as "strikingly original" and "beautifully subtle, sensual scents for people with a strong sense of individual style" [3].

Products & innovation

The range is organised into collections such as Chypre, Citrus, Cuir, Incense, Oriental and the Loukhoum Trio, and is sold direct to consumers as well as through niche-fragrance retailers internationally. Fragrances are handcrafted in Grasse from ingredients sourced globally.

On ethics, the company states that none of its ingredients are of animal origin and that it does not test on animals, which it presents as both cruelty-free and free of animal-derived materials [1]. It also says all packaging and glass bottles are recyclable and that its materials are ethically sourced.

Current status

The brand is active. Its direct e-commerce site ships internationally, and recent fragrance releases — among them West of the Moon, Stellar Jasmine, Luna Rosa and Deep Matter — confirm that it continues to launch new work [4]. It remains small in scale and independent, distributing alongside other niche houses rather than operating as a mass-market brand.
