Overview
Lavilin is an Israeli personal-care brand best known for aluminium-free deodorants that aim to last several days from a single application. It was established in Israel in 1974 by the biochemist Ziska Hlavin [10], and its products are built around a different premise from most antiperspirants: rather than blocking sweat glands with aluminium salts, the formulas use natural plant extracts and probiotic ingredients to act on the bacteria that cause odour. The brand is owned by the Chic-Hlavin Cosmetic Group, the company formed after Chic Cosmetic Industries acquired Hlavin Industries in 2016 [10]. It remains active, sold internationally and through a dedicated Scandinavian distributor.
Some sources record the founding differently. The official Chic-Hlavin company history dates Hlavin Industries and the Lavilin brand to 1974 in Israel [10], a year also given by the Swedish distributor and the brand's own Lavilin Story page. Other company material traces the underlying factory and research to 1973, the year cited for Hlavin Industries' start [6]. The 1973 date generally refers to Dr Hlavin's earlier work and factory in Israel, while 1974 is consistently used as the year the Lavilin brand itself was established.
Origin and founders
According to the brand's own account, Lavilin's roots reach back to the Second World War, when Ziska Hlavin, a biochemist originally from Latvia, was assigned by the Soviet Army to develop a deodorant that could fight strong odour, last over time and work in harmony with the body [8]. His approach targeted and eliminated odour-causing bacteria at the source rather than masking the smell, producing a cream said to protect for up to seven days without frequent reapplication. After relocating to Israel, Hlavin established Lavilin in 1974 and began introducing the formula to international markets.
The flagship product that emerged from this work, a 7-day underarm cream deodorant, has remained central to the brand's identity. The company describes its philosophy as keeping the product "at war with odour" while "at peace with your body" [8] — neutralising bacteria instead of clogging pores.
Ownership
Lavilin is part of the Chic-Hlavin Cosmetic Group, headquartered at Ha Yarkon Street in Yavne, Israel [10]. The group was created in 2016, when Chic Cosmetic Industries — established in 1987 and known in Israel for nail polish, Dead Sea products and sunscreens — acquired Hlavin Industries [10]. The combined company describes itself as drawing on more than four decades of cosmetics experience and operates a production facility of around 6,500 square metres in Yavne that also houses a small cosmetics museum [10]. The legal entity behind the group is registered as Chic Cosmetic Industries (1989) Ltd.
Philosophy and positioning
Lavilin positions itself as a maker of aluminium-free deodorants and natural personal-care products. The company says ingredient quality matters more than profit, which it gives as the reason its products avoid aluminium and other harsh chemicals. The formulas are described as free from aluminium salts, alcohol and parabens, and as working in harmony with the body's natural detoxification through sweating rather than suppressing it. Across its sites the brand uses the line "ingredients actually worth talking about" to summarise this positioning.
The company maintains a no-animal-testing policy. It does not market itself as wholly vegan: its Scandinavian FAQ notes that some variants contain milk proteins and only some products are fully vegan, so the brand stops short of a blanket claim.
Products and innovation
The deodorant range extends across creams, sticks, roll-ons, sprays and wipes, alongside foot care, intimate care and body products such as washes and jojoba-based creams. Formulas draw on natural extracts including calendula, arnica montana, chamomile, sage, cranberry, witch hazel and soybean oil, combined with probiotic ingredients meant to restore the skin's natural balance.
The brand attributes the long wear of its deodorants to what its Scandinavian FAQ calls a "patented bio-balance formula," described as neutralising the bacteria responsible for odour rather than masking it or blocking pores [3]. Stated effectiveness ranges from around 48 hours up to seven days depending on the product and the individual. The 7-day underarm cream remains the signature item, while a 72-hour roll-on is among the more widely reviewed products in the line.
The group reports that its products comply with US, European and Asian standards and that it holds several certifications, including ECOCERT, GMP (ISO 22716:2007), ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 for medical devices [6].
Recognition
Lavilin's roll-on deodorant was named the all-around winner of New York Magazine's test of aluminium-free deodorants [11]; the magazine's reviewer reported that the product held up through "almost 48 hours, an outdoor dance party, a long run, and a shower" [9]. The brand also collects quotes attributed to other publications on its press page — including a line from The New York Times and a note from Allure that the roll-on "completely masks odour" through a long outdoor run [9] — though these are aggregated by the company itself and carry no publication dates.
Current status
Lavilin is an active brand. It is sold through an official US site, the Chic-Hlavin manufacturer site (which carries a 2026 copyright line), and a Swedish distributor, VP Trading AB, operating as Lavilin Scandinavia from Bromma, Stockholm. The company reports distribution through more than 1,200 points of sale in Israel and across over 55 countries internationally [10].
