Overview
Le Couvent, also marketed as Le Couvent Parfums, is a French fragrance and skincare house based in Provence, with its perfumes produced in Grasse. It positions itself as a vegan house of "haute parfumerie accessible to all," and since 2019 its olfactory creation has been directed by the perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, formerly of Hermès.
The house draws its name and story from the Couvent des Minimes, a convent founded in 1614 in Mane, Provence, where Louis Feuillée, a botanist to King Louis XIV, once lived [6]. The brand itself is a far more recent creation: trade press dates the original commercial brand, then called Le Couvent des Minimes, to 2004 under the L'Occitane group [6].

Origin and heritage
The brand's identity is built around a 17th-century convent rather than a modern founding moment. According to consolidated accounts, Le Couvent's narrative "began at the Couvent des Minimes, a majestic place founded in 1614 in the South of France where Louis Feuillée, an illustrious botanist to King Louis XIV, lived." This 1614 date belongs to the convent and its botanical heritage, not to the company; the commercial brand was established centuries later.
The exact founding year of that modern brand is recorded inconsistently across sources. Premium Beauty News, a trade publication, states the "original brand created in 2004 by L'Occitane group" [6], a figure broadly consistent with an aggregator account describing the house as "founded 15 years ago by the L'Occitane group" relative to a 2018 article. A separate search summary instead gives 2012 [8]; the 2004 date is the one explicitly stated in trade press and is used here, with the discrepancy noted.
Ownership
The brand was created within the L'Occitane group and, according to Premium Beauty News, was purchased by Laboratoires Filorga in 2017 [6]. Under Filorga, the house was restructured and relaunched: in 2018 the existing fragrances were discontinued and the brand moved toward the shortened name Le Couvent, with new collections introduced over the following years [7].
Philosophy and positioning
Le Couvent presents itself as a return to simplicity in perfumery. The company frames its approach as "reinventing perfume" and a "back to basics" outlook, asking what makes things beautiful and answering with "their simplicity, their obviousness, their soul and their uniqueness." It also emphasizes what it calls "the praise of slowness" in the act of creating a fragrance, summed up in the tagline "Take time…"
Commercially, the house describes its ambition as "creating a Singular Haute Parfumerie accessible to all, working with beautiful materials and noble essences" — a phrase attributed to Ellena. The positioning combines a niche, clean-and-vegan identity with a stated intent to keep high perfumery within reach, and the brand associates itself with the broader clean-beauty and slow-beauty currents.
Products and creation
The house's output centers on fragrance, organized into ranges such as Parfums Signatures, Eaux de Parfum Remarquables ("an invitation to travel"), Eaux de Parfum Singulières ("nature portraits") and Colognes Botaniques, alongside home fragrance and a hand- and body-care line. Among its best-selling perfumes the brand lists Tinharé, Porto-Bello, Theria, Nubica, Aqua Minimes and Aqua Paradisi.
A notable development came with the Signatures collection, three fragrances — Tuberosa, Mimosa and Ambra — that Jean-Claude Ellena composed himself, launched in 2021 [7]. The French perfume publication Auparfum described the project as a shift for Ellena, who had earlier favored synthetic materials and turned increasingly toward natural ones; the Signatures were made in France with up to 84% natural-origin ingredients [7]. Ellena leads a team of handpicked French perfumers, and the company says its compositions are produced in collaboration with laboratories in Grasse.
Ethics and sustainability
Le Couvent positions itself as a clean and vegan house. The company states that all of its products are "100% Vegan" and that the range is certified by the Vegan Society, with no animal testing [3]. It says its formulas exclude more than fifty components, listing among them parabens, PEG, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, BHA, BHT, EDTA, mineral oils and waxes, and phenoxyethanol [4].
On materials and manufacturing, the brand says its perfumes contain up to 93% ingredients of natural origin, calculated according to the ISO 16128 standard [4], and that its glass bottles are produced in France, its perfumes made in Grasse, and its cardboard boxes made from FSC-certified paper. The company frames these commitments as part of moving "towards a greener future" with more responsible packaging.
Current status
Le Couvent is an active brand owned by Laboratoires Filorga. It operates a live e-commerce site selling its current collections and has continued to release fragrances under Ellena's olfactory direction, with distribution across European markets including the Nordic countries.
