Overview
Le Rouge Français is a French colour-cosmetics company based in the Marais district of Paris. It was founded by Élodie Carpentier and her husband Salem Ghezaili [10], and its defining idea is to colour makeup with pigments drawn from dye plants rather than the petroleum-derived synthetic colourants used across most of the industry. The company sells lipsticks, eye and complexion products and nail polish, and frames its work as "responsible beauty, where color becomes care."
The brand remains active. In 2025 it opened its first physical boutique in Paris and launched a public crowdfunding campaign to fund industrial expansion and exports.

Origin & founders
Carpentier is a biotechnology engineer who worked at the pharmaceutical companies Sanofi and Ipsen before moving into cosmetics. By her own account she began developing the brand while pregnant, when she started scrutinising both her diet and the ingredients in her skincare and makeup. Wanting to keep wearing red lipstick without petroleum derivatives or synthetic pigments, she looked for a plant-based alternative and, finding none, set out to formulate one [7]. She co-founded the company with Ghezaili.
The founding year is reported inconsistently. Trade publications Formes de Luxe and Global Cosmetics News both date it to 2019 [8][10]; other editorial coverage places it in 2018 or 2020 [9]. The brand's own pages do not state an explicit founding year. The label launched with a line of 16 lipstick shades coloured with tinctorial-plant pigments.
Philosophy & positioning
The company positions itself as an alternative to conventional colour cosmetics, which it says rely overwhelmingly on synthetic pigments: by its account, "99% of the colourants used in conventional make-up are obtained from synthetic pigments… derived from petroleum." Its stated answer is to substitute botanical pigments and to hold formulas to a restrictive ingredient list, excluding titanium dioxide and PFAS among other substances.
Carpentier approaches the subject through both biotechnology and art history, and the brand draws openly on the history of cosmetics across cultures — Egyptian, Asian, pre-Columbian and African traditions of pigment and adornment. It describes its mission as "responsible beauty, where color becomes care," with a tagline of "plant-based colour." Editorial coverage has described the brand as embracing "the language of luxury" while keeping its formulations natural, vegan and made in France.
Products & innovation
The range spans lips, eyes, face and nails, and had grown to roughly 80 references by 2024. Signature items named by the company include the Lipstick Alizarine — which it calls "the iconic lipstick" — the Cheek & Lips Nefertiti, the Mascara Cassiopée and a brow-and-lash serum, Eyebrow and Lash Care Medusa [7].
Colour comes from dye plants such as madder, indigo, weld (reseda), annatto, alkanet, Damask rose, hibiscus and vegetable charcoal, with the brand's science pages cataloguing more than forty botanical species used for pigment and skincare actives. The central technical claim is what the company calls "plant-based colour, a patented extraction process unique in the world." In founder interviews Carpentier has described the method in more detail, citing bacterial fermentation and enzymatic extraction together with supercritical carbon dioxide rather than petrochemical solvents [8]. The brand also reports a patented combination of probiotics and hyaluronic acid in its complexion fluid [8]. Its nail polish is not certified organic; according to Carpentier it uses a bio-sourced base and algae-derived pigments.
Sustainability
Le Rouge Français holds COSMOS organic certification from ECOCERT, and describes its formulas as vegan and cruelty-free [1]. It states that its packaging is "strictly 100% recyclable," made from glass or bio-sourced materials such as castor oil, and that its lipstick case is refillable. The company says it was the first makeup brand to adopt a "regenerative economy" model across its entire value chain, and that it plants one mangrove for every order placed [9]. Manufacturing is split between a laboratory in Marseille and production in Normandy with a partner firm [8].
History & milestones
The brand launched in 2019 with its initial lipstick collection. By 2024 it reported revenue past the one-million-euro mark and a distribution footprint of around 200 points of sale, with international stockists in Italy, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, including several Neiman Marcus stores [8]. In 2025 it opened its first standalone boutique at 16 rue de Turenne in the Marais, Paris, and began a €1.5 million crowdfunding campaign on the Tudigo platform to support industrial expansion and exports; coverage at the time put its network at about 100 retailers worldwide, including Neiman Marcus and Credo Beauty, with planned distribution through Nocibé in France [10].
Recognition
Carpentier has been named an "Éclaireur du Coq Vert" by the French public investment bank Bpifrance, a label recognising entrepreneurs working on climate and ecological transition [8]. The brand has been profiled in trade press including Formes de Luxe and Global Cosmetics News.
Current status
The company is active. Its most recent documented activity is the 2025 opening of its Paris flagship and the accompanying crowdfunding drive, and it distributes through roughly 100 international points of sale.
