Summary

Overview

Les Bains Guerbois is a French niche perfume house based in Paris, built around one of the city's most storied addresses: 7 rue du Bourg l'Abbé, a 19th-century bathhouse that later became a nightclub and then a hotel. The company traces its name and founding to an 1885 spa established by Auguste Guerbois [4]. The fragrance line itself is a recent venture, relaunched in the 2010s by Jean-Pierre Marois, an heir of the venue, who turned its history into a collection of scents [8].

The house describes itself as "Parisian Haute Perfumery," and each fragrance is conceived as an olfactory journey to a specific year and chapter in the address's past. The brand remains active, with a multilingual online store shipping to more than 30 countries and editorial coverage as recent as 2024.

Origin and founders

The brand's identity rests on a single Parisian location. According to the company, Auguste Guerbois founded a spa at 7 rue du Bourg l'Abbé in 1885, which "quickly became a Parisian temple of beauty and well-being." In its first life the bathhouse drew figures from 19th-century arts and society; editorial accounts associate it with Marcel Proust, Claude Monet and Émile Zola [7].

The site's later history is what gave it lasting fame. In 1978 it was renamed Les Bains Douches and became one of the best-known nightclubs in the world, a venue that Robb Report later called "a Parisian answer to Studio 54." It closed in 2010 and reopened in 2015 as a five-star boutique hotel.

The perfume brand is a modern creation layered onto that lineage. Jean-Pierre Marois, described on the brand site as the venue's heir and the house's founder and creative director since 2016, revived the name as a fragrance label. This produces a split worth noting: the company dates its founding to 1885 and names Auguste Guerbois as founder, while the perfume business that exists today was established by Marois in the 2010s [4][3].

History and milestones

The brand frames itself around nearly 140 years of continuous reinvention, "first a spa, then a night club, then a hotel." The fragrance venture's own timeline is short and, in one detail, disputed. The brand site and the retailer 50-ml place the first eau de cologne and the "Atmosphère" scented candle in 2016, followed in 2018 by the niche eau de parfum collection "Une date, une histoire" [8]. Robb Report instead dates the first candle to 2018 and the official fragrance collection to 2021 [7]. A later range, "Formes & Matières," is dated to 2022.

In spring 2024 a second property tied to the venue, Les Bains Gardians, opened in the Camargue region [7].

Philosophy and positioning

The concept behind the line is to translate defining dates from the venue's history into perfume. Under the banner "Une date, une histoire" (a date, a story), each fragrance is named for a year and is meant to evoke that moment: examples include 1885 Bains Sulfureux, 1978 Les Bains Douches and 2015 Le Phénix. The house says its aim is to "capture the quintessence of a free, avant-garde, chic Paris through one of its most iconic addresses," and frames the place as one "of celebration, of well-being, and legend that continuously reinvents itself" [4].

Products and innovation

Les Bains Guerbois is a fragrance brand, offering eau de parfum in 30 ml and 100 ml sizes alongside the "Atmosphère" scented candle and discovery sets. According to Robb Report, the catalogue spans 13 scents across the historic "Une date, une histoire" line and the "Formes & Matières" collection, with five signature scents retailing at $225 each through the niche retailer LuckyScent [7].

The fragrances are built by a roster of established French perfumers, among them Dominique Ropion, Bertrand Duchaufour, Michel Almairac, Dorothée Piot and Jean-Claude Ellena; Ellena is credited with the eau de parfum Rose Graffiti. Reported ingredients include centifolia and damask rose, tuberose, patchouli, musk, black tea and leather. Three of the scents — 2015 Le Phénix, Oud Laqué and Damier — have also been adapted into massage oils for treatments at the associated spa.

On ethics and production, the company states its formulas are "100% vegan and cruelty free" and "composed and manufactured in France," using sustainable alcohol and natural color drawn from raw materials with "no dye, synthetic stabilizer, preservatives or UV filters." It adds that outer packaging is recyclable and wrapped in compostable, organic-certified cellophane [4].

Recognition and press

In 2024 Robb Report published a feature on the house titled "Les Bains Guerbois: The Fragrant History of Paris' Coolest Scent Brand." Much of the venue's cultural weight predates the perfume line and belongs to its nightclub era: the editorial records that Les Bains Douches drew David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jean Paul Gaultier, Mick Jagger, Robert De Niro, Naomi Campbell, Madonna and Johnny Depp, with David Guetta as resident DJ [7]. These associations belong to the address rather than to direct endorsements of the fragrances.

Current status

The brand is active. It operates a live, multilingual e-commerce site (English, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish) that ships internationally, sells through niche retailers such as LuckyScent and 50-ml, and added collections in 2018 and 2022. Its most recent visible activity includes the 2024 Robb Report feature and the spring 2024 opening of the Les Bains Gardians property [7]. Distribution is international online and through selected retailers rather than mass-market.
