Summary

Overview

Les Eaux Primordiales is an independent French perfume house founded in 2015 by perfumer Arnaud Poulain [1]. Based in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, it describes itself as a "Manufacture de Parfums" and blends what the company calls heritage, innovation and French craftsmanship across a range of fragrances, scented candles and a small hand- and body-care line.

The house takes its name from Jules Verne's novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, where the term evokes the primordial waters in which the first forms of life take shape. Still led by its founder, the brand remains an active niche operation rather than a mass-market label, selling across several European markets and the Nordics through specialist retailers.

Origin & founders

Arnaud Poulain was born in Arras in 1986 and grew up in the countryside in a family of craftspeople; he credits a metalworker father, a cabinetmaker uncle and farming grandparents with shaping his respect for manual skill. He became interested in science and mechanical engineering as a teenager, and discovered perfume in 2007, an encounter he describes as immediate. He trained in the craft in Lens, where early lessons in olfaction revealed an unusual sensitivity to smell and introduced him to Amélie Bourgeois, a perfumer who became his mentor and continued to work with him on the technical development of his fragrances.

After several years in independent perfumery, Poulain founded Les Eaux Primordiales in 2015 [1]. According to the company, the name signals a "return to the source," and siting the manufacture in his home region of Hauts-de-France followed naturally from that idea. Poulain approaches each fragrance as an art object, drawing on visual memory, painting and photography as raw material for his compositions.

History & milestones

The first collection comprised six perfumes, with names such as Iris Palladium, Champ d'Influence and Abstraction Raisonée [7]. Writing in 2022, Wallpaper described Poulain at the time of launch as Paris-based, with prior experience at fragrance studios including Cinquième Sens and Flair Paris [7]; the brand has since rooted its identity and production firmly in northern France.

In 2021, Poulain acquired the Domaine Primordial, a 14-hectare wooded estate near Arras, to house the manufacture [3]. The brand frames the purchase as the realisation of a childhood dream: as a boy he had sold vegetables with his grandfather on the road opposite the estate, listening to stories of its mining-era and wartime past. In 2023, the house created an olfactory installation titled Expériences Immobiles with DWA Design Studio for Milan Design Week, which received the Fuorisalone Jury Prize for Best Interactive Installation [5].

Philosophy & positioning

Les Eaux Primordiales positions itself at the meeting point of craft, art and luxury, with an aesthetic drawn from industrial minimalism. The company states that craftsmanship, innovation and authenticity are its guiding principles, and that each fragrance is meant to embody singularity and artistic precision. The minimalist bottle design references the photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, known for their typological images of industrial water towers — a visual link the brand returns to in its design language.

The Perfume Society, a UK fragrance authority, characterises the house as sitting "halfway between the romantic and the prosaic," drawing on an earlier era of perfumery when fragrance combined art and science, and aiming to "bottle history while being propelled by modernity" [6]. Wallpaper judged the work "masculine while being perfectly suitable for thoughtful perfume-lovers of either sex; clever but also with a hint of fun" [7].

Products & innovation

The catalogue is organised into collections the brand labels Superclassique, Supercritique, Superfluide, Supermassive and Superose, spanning eaux de parfum, perfume extracts and travel editions. Among the products it lists as best-sellers are Couleur Primaire and Iris Palladium. Alongside fragrance, the house sells a hand- and body-care line, "Le Soin Primordial," and a range of scented candles.

Production is described as taking place at the Domaine Primordial, where concentrates undergo what the company calls a long, controlled maturation. The brand says it stores compositions in stainless-steel vats inside an "Atmos 432 Resonance Chamber" — a darkened space with stable temperature and adjusted humidity — and exposes the perfumes for several hours to classical music played at 432 hertz, a frequency it associates, citing unspecified studies, with the harmonisation of living organisms [4]. The same site also functions as a studio for making candles and craft furniture, with some artisans drawn from the Compagnons du Devoir tradition.

Recognition

The brand's principal award to date is the 2023 Fuorisalone Jury Prize for Best Interactive Installation, given for the Expériences Immobiles project at Milan Design Week [5]. Its fragrances have also drawn editorial attention, including a feature in Wallpaper and a perfume-house profile by The Perfume Society [6][7].

Current status

Les Eaux Primordiales remains an active, independent and founder-led perfume house. Its production is centred on the Domaine Primordial in Hauts-de-France, and its fragrances reach customers across several European markets — among them France, Germany, Spain, Belgium and the United Kingdom — as well as the Nordic countries through specialist retailers. It operates as a niche house rather than a mass or global brand.
