Overview
Lola's Apothecary is a British natural body-care and home-fragrance brand from Devon, in the south-west of England. Founded by Dominic Phillips, it makes bath oils, body oils, whipped body soufflés, body polishes, candles and related products that are blended by hand with essential oils on the founder's family estate. The company describes its aim as marrying fine fragrance with natural skincare, and much of its work is aimed at spas as well as home use.
The brand's starting point is not settled. UK company records show the business adopting the Lola's Apothecary name in September 2013 [12], while the profile kept by the sustainability certifier Positive Luxury gives 2016 as its year of establishment [8]. Its products have been recognised several times by The Beauty Shortlist Awards, a UK beauty awards programme, and the company remains active.
Origin & founders
The brand is the project of Dominic Phillips, who is named as its founder and managing director in the company's Positive Luxury profile; the brand's own website refers to him only as Dominic. He grew up on a farm in Devon, where, according to Positive Luxury, he spent his childhood climbing trees and swimming in the River Taw. The same profile and the company's own story trace the idea for the business to a family holiday in Greece, where he experienced a spa for the first time as a child.
According to the company, Dominic later lived in London before leaving city life behind. The brand's "Our Story" page says he wanted to help others "on their own winding paths to wellness & inner peace," and that he set out to create a range to be "handmade by inspired artisans on his picturesque family estate." He assembled what the company calls "a team of inspired artisans from the local community in Devon" to make it. From the beginning, the brand says, the plan included small-batch production, the use of glass packaging only and a focus on sustainability.
History & milestones
The legal company behind the brand is older than the name. It was incorporated in England on 11 November 2011 under the name Shadow Museum Limited and changed its name to Lola's Apothecary Ltd on 30 September 2013 [12]. Its registered business activities cover the manufacture of perfumes and toilet preparations, wholesale of perfume and cosmetics, and retail sales through markets and online.
The two dates for the brand's beginnings point in different directions. Positive Luxury lists the company as established in 2016 [8], but independent evidence shows the brand trading before then. In February 2014 a UK grooming blog reviewed the brand's Eucalyptus & Mint Bath Oil, which the company had sent to the writer to try [13]. The brand described that oil as "a clarifying bath oil to ease winter colds," made with eucalyptus, rosemary, marjoram and mint. In March 2016 one of its bath oils won an award from The Beauty Shortlist [9]. This article therefore follows the 2013 name change as the earliest documented use of the Lola's Apothecary name, while noting that the first products may have reached customers in 2013 or early 2014.
Positive Luxury first certified the company with its Butterfly Mark in 2018. Further awards from The Beauty Shortlist followed in 2021 and 2023. Lifestyle and beauty blogs reviewed the range in 2018 and 2020, describing the bath oils, perfume roll-ons, candles and body soufflés.
Philosophy & positioning
Lola's Apothecary presents itself as an aromatherapy-led brand that sits between natural skincare and perfumery. On its philosophy page the company says its products "marry fine fragrance with effective natural skincare, to bring the sophistication & decadence of luxury cosmetics back into the realm of natural beauty." It describes its formulas as "effective yet gentle, inspired by aromatherapy," and links its use of scent to wellbeing, stating a belief that a holistic lifestyle "can be enhanced by moments of sensory indulgence."
Its mission statement, as published by Positive Luxury, reads: "With a passion for the earth and holistic healing, Lola's Apothecary curates bespoke wellness rituals that become an indulgent part of self-care." The company frames its range around ritual and mood rather than skin concerns. Its online shop lets customers browse by fragrance family and by mood, with headings such as calm, joy, romance, rest and energy. Its tagline describes the products as "Lovingly Hand Blended with Pure Essential Oils on Our Family Estate in the Midst of the Beautiful English Countryside."
Spas are a central part of how the brand describes itself. The company calls its offer a "Transformative Spa Brand" and says it works with spa partners ranging from mountain resorts in Park City, Utah, to country retreats in Britain and urban wellness centres in London and Rotterdam. It does not name individual partners. Positive Luxury lists the brand's distribution as worldwide, and the company also offers bespoke services, including wedding favours and corporate gifts.
Products & innovation
The range is built around body and bath care and home fragrance. It includes body and massage oils, whipped body soufflés, body polishes, bath and shower oils, a bath milk, bath salt, candles, room sprays and pillow mists, perfume-oil roll-ons, wellness teas and gift sets. Most products belong to a named fragrance family. These include Queen of Roses, Delicate Romance, Sweet Lullaby, Breath of Clarity, Tranquil Isle, Monsoon Paradise, Divine Grace, Orange Blossom, Cherry Blossom and Euphoric Indulgence.
Essential oils are the brand's core material. The company says it uses "generous quantities of the purest essential oils" to "bring the joy & healing of aromatherapy lore," and that its products are formulated and blended by hand in micro batches on the family estate. Reviewers have described other ingredients in individual products, including whipped shea butter, coconut oil and camellia oil in the body soufflés, and rosehip CO2 extract and argan oil in the body oils. A 2018 review noted that the packaging carries botanical patterns by the British illustrator Deborah Ballinger.
Lola's Apothecary describes all of its products as natural. It says its fragrant products are free from synthetic fragrance, mineral oils, sulphates and parabens [5]. According to the company, most products contain no preservatives at all, and natural or food-safe preservatives are used only where necessary. The brand does not hold organic certification. Its FAQ argues that certification can be expensive for farmers and says most of its ingredients are "pretty much organic by definition even if they are not certified."
Accounts of the brand's vegan status differ. The homepage presents the fragrances as "Vegan Friendly," and the Positive Luxury profile states that all products are cruelty-free and vegan [8]. The company's own FAQ is more specific. It says the majority of products are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, but that the Queen of Roses Bath Milk contains buttermilk [6]. No third-party cruelty-free certification, such as Leaping Bunny, is documented.
The company also publishes safety guidance with its range. It says it formulates with sensitive skin in mind but advises a patch test before wider use. Because the products contain large amounts of essential oils, it suggests avoiding them in the first trimester of pregnancy and recommends that expectant mothers consult a midwife first.
Sustainability
The company holds the Butterfly Mark from Positive Luxury, a sustainability certification awarded by that organisation [4]. The brand says it received the mark in recognition of its commitment to sustainability and ethical business practice.
According to its Positive Luxury profile, all products are packed in recyclable glass and cardboard, and orders are shipped in biodegradable materials. The profile says the company avoids propylene glycol, microbeads and mica, and works with suppliers on sustainable and fair-trade sourcing. It also states an aim to trace all of its materials, and mentions a refill scheme being developed with spa partners. Production in small batches by hand is presented as a way to reduce waste and keep energy use low. The profile adds that the small team in Devon is paid fair wages and works in safe conditions. On its own site the company encourages customers to reuse its glass bottles and jars at home, for example as vases or spice jars.
Recognition
Most of the brand's third-party recognition comes from The Beauty Shortlist Awards. In 2016 its Delicate Romance Bath and Shower Oil won the Best Bath Oil category [9]. In 2021 two of its body and massage oils, Delicate Romance and Breath of Clarity, were named joint winners for Best Massage Oil, and its Sweet Lullaby body soufflé was listed in the multipurpose body product category [10].
In 2023 the Decadent Body Polish was a joint winner for Best Body Polish, and the Divine Grace body soufflé appeared in the body soufflé category [11]. Three further products, the Tranquil Isle body polish, the Queen of Roses Bath Milk and the Euphoric Indulgence body and massage oil, were listed that year as Editor's Choice picks in beauty. Beyond these awards, coverage of the brand consists mainly of reviews on personal and lifestyle blogs.
Current status
Lola's Apothecary is active. The company is listed as active on the UK companies register, and its most recent confirmation statement is dated 31 January 2026 [12]. The brand continues to sell its range through its own website and through its spa partners.
