Summary

Overview

LYKKEGAARD Care is a Danish skincare company based in Aarhus, founded by Mette Lykkegaard and her husband Stig Bundgaard [2]. It sells certified-organic face and body products and presents itself as a "Natural Premium Skincare from Denmark" range built on third-party certifications and ingredient transparency. The brand name joins the founder's family surname with the Danish word lykke — happiness, luck or fortune.

The line grew out of the couple's longer history in beauty: for more than two decades they have run NATULIQUE, an organic hair-care company supplying professional salons. LYKKEGAARD remains active, with a live multilingual website and an Instagram account that continues to post, though its blog has not been updated since early 2023.

Origin and founders

According to the company, LYKKEGAARD began with the personal circumstances of its founder. Mette Lykkegaard, a trained lawyer with expertise in environmental law, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28 [2]. She has said the experience led her to question the chemicals used in cosmetics. Two of the couple's four children also developed severe skin allergies early in life, and the family found clean, organic products hard to source at the time.

Encouraged by people in the industry, the founders set out to build what they describe as "a natural yet luxurious skincare line for everyone," applying the same ingredient and certification standards they had developed through NATULIQUE. Mette Lykkegaard's co-founder is her husband, Stig Bundgaard, an economics graduate of Copenhagen Business School who worked in sustainable energy before moving into the beauty sector [12]. A business listing cited by NATULIQUE describes Mette Lykkegaard as "CEO and founder of NATULIQUE, NATURIGIN and LYKKEGAARD," indicating that the three brands share the same leadership in Aarhus [12].

The brand does not publish a specific launch year, and none could be confirmed from its own materials; its earliest blog posts date to January 2022, and it post-dates a 2017 survey of Danish beauty brands that did not include it. The founders' companion company, NATULIQUE, dates its own founding to 1998 on its founders page [12]; one editorial profile instead gives 1988, a discrepancy the brand's primary source does not support [14].

Philosophy and positioning

LYKKEGAARD's stated philosophy is that "skincare products should be natural in their composition as well as straightforward in their application," and that "everyone is entitled to feel healthy and confident in their own skin" [2]. The company frames its mission as encouraging people to "live healthier and happier" through natural skincare and education about clean formulation.

Denmark's organic and environmental standards are central to how the brand describes itself, and it lists transparency, ethics and sustainability among its core values. Editorially, it has been linked to the clean-beauty and slow-beauty movements.

Products and ingredients

The range is organised into a Face Care Line and a Body Care Line. Face products span cleansing, toning, hydration, anti-ageing and sun protection — among them a Refreshing Facial Cleansing Foam, a Micellar 3in1 Face Tonic, the Age Gracefully Hyaluronic Acid Power Cream and an SPF30 Facial Sun Cream. The body range includes sun and self-tan products, deodorant, body oils and washes; the Illuminating Exclusive Self Tan Foam, described by the company as plant-based, is featured prominently on its site.

The company says it uses "only naturally derived and certified organic ingredients" and maintains a glossary documenting all 81 ingredients in its formulas [5]. Hero ingredients it highlights include oat extract, Danish wild bilberry, shea butter, hyaluronic acid and cloudberry extract. LYKKEGAARD also states that it uses only preservatives approved for food, reflecting a principle that what is safe to consume internally should be safe to apply externally.

Certifications and sustainability

Certification is a defining part of the brand's positioning. Its products carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, which it describes as a strict environmental certification covering the product lifecycle, and a Certified Vegan mark from the Vegan Society [4]. The company also references certification from Asthma Allergy Denmark, aimed at preventing skin allergies and sensitivity, and states that all products are made in Denmark with certified raw ingredients [11].

LYKKEGAARD says its bottles and tubes are made from recycled and recyclable plastic, and that it sources cardboard from FSC-certified forests. The company states that each product purchase funds the planting of a tree through a partnership with OneTreePlanted.org [3].

Recognition

Third-party coverage of the brand is limited. In January 2022, the site Organic Beauty Blogger reviewed three LYKKEGAARD face products, describing the range as "a luxurious, certified organic skincare from Denmark" and singling out the cleansing foam as "excellent" [13]. No major awards or wide editorial coverage were identified.

Distribution and current status

LYKKEGAARD is sold through a mix of channels, including NATULIQUE concept salons and independent retailers across several countries — among them Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United States and Dubai, as well as listings at retailers such as Douglas in Spain and Manufactum in Germany.

The brand remains active. Its website is maintained in multiple languages and its Instagram account, @lykkegaardcare, continues to post. Its blog, however, has not published since February 2023, when a self-tan application guide appeared [15].
