Overview
M Picaut, also presented as M Picaut Swedish Skincare, is a Swedish skincare company founded by former international model Mette Picaut. It positions itself in the eco-luxury segment, pairing organic, plant-derived ingredients with active complexes, and manufactures its products in Falun, in the Dalarna region of central Sweden [11]. The brand reached the market in 2010 [13], though one retailer profile dates the founder's decision to start her own line to 2008 [14].
The company remains active and founder-led. It has accumulated a continuous record of beauty-award recognition from 2010 through 2025 [8], distributes across the Nordic countries and selected export markets, and continued launching products into 2024 and 2025.
Origin and founder
Mette Picaut was born in Gothenburg in 1967 and worked as a model from 1989 to 2000, based mainly in Tokyo with assignments across Europe, Asia, the United States and Australia. Alongside that career she trained in acupuncture within Traditional Chinese Medicine and completed several semesters of nursing education.
By the brand's own account, the idea took shape at home rather than in a laboratory. While on parental leave with her second child and studying to become a nurse, around the age of 40, Picaut was lent books on aromatherapy by a family friend who holds a doctorate in chemistry. She began blending organic oils in her kitchen the next day; in the company's telling, "soon the shelves were full of test tubes and whisks." That kitchen experimentation grew into the product line. Picaut describes her working method as a "motto to make haste slowly," allowing formulas extended development time, and says she personally tests all of them to keep what she calls the soul and presence in the process.
Sources differ on when the business began. Editorial coverage and the brand's own awards record place the market launch in 2010, the year M Picaut first won prizes at the Tara Beauty Awards [13]. A profile by the retailer Dutch Health Store instead states that in 2008 she "decided to follow her passion and launch her own skincare line," which appears to describe the decision and development phase rather than the public launch [14]. The founder's husband, Eric Picaut, is described as joining later as the company expanded, not as a co-founder [13].
Philosophy and positioning
M Picaut's stated guiding principle is "Less is More," summarised by Picaut as the view that "Nature offers most of what is needed." The company frames its approach as uniting opposites — the purest natural ingredients with what it calls the most effective results of research — and selects ingredients against three criteria it labels effectiveness, sensuality and a natural approach. Picaut has likened the concept to "Vintage Couture, where ancient holistic knowledge meets high technology" [5], and gives the brand's intended feeling as femininity, quality and sensuality, together with sharing knowledge.
The brand markets itself as "advanced ecoluxury" for the skin and addresses a customer it characterises as detail-oriented and design-conscious. The US clean-beauty retailer Ayla Beauty describes M Picaut as one of the best-selling skincare brands in Sweden, featured in spas and clinics and noted for an "unusual focus on results," with formulas it calls cosmetically elegant and gemstone-infused [13].
Products and ingredients
The range spans skincare, makeup and body care, with skincare at its centre. Recurring signature products include the Precious Oil facial oil, the Diamond Extreme Pro Collagen Super Rich Cream, the Rose Quartz Supreme Probiotic Rich Cream and the Hydra Lagoon Overnight Mask, several of which feature semi-precious stones such as rose quartz, amethyst and aventurine.
Sea buckthorn is the company's headline botanical, described on its ingredient pages as used in Traditional Chinese Medicine "since the 800s," as containing 190 active substances, and as appearing across more than seventeen products. Other emphasised ingredients include probiotics and prebiotics, cocoa butter, peptides, pearl extract and bakuchiol, which the brand presents as a natural alternative to retinol.
M Picaut also names several proprietary complexes, among them Algica, a silica microalgae cultivated in Kungshamn on the Swedish coast, a glucosamine complex it calls a third-generation hyaluronic acid, and a peptide complex built on oligopeptides and tetrapeptide-3. The company cites supporting studies for two of these, attributing a 37 percent reduction in the area and volume of fine lines within 30 minutes to Algica and a 45 percent visible wrinkle reduction after two months to the peptide complex [9]. These figures are presented as the brand's own claims.
Ethics and sustainability
The company states that none of its products are tested on animals and that seventeen of nineteen products in its core range are fully vegan [7]. It describes its formulas as built on clean, organic ingredients and says it avoids parabens, mineral oils, silicones and synthetic surfactants such as lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, citing concerns about pore-clogging, barrier stripping and hormone disruption [10]. Rather than removing all fragrance, M Picaut says it uses a hypoallergenic scent sparingly and no essential fragrance oils.
Production takes place in Sweden using green electricity and purified Dalsland water, with packaging in recyclable glass or what the company calls eco-friendly plastic. The shea butter used in products such as the Calming Cocoon Cream is sourced as fair-trade marked from a women's cooperative in Ghana, which the brand says provides members with a strengthened position and a stable income. M Picaut lists no third-party certifications for its organic, vegan or cruelty-free claims.
Recognition
M Picaut has a long and largely self-documented record of awards, beginning in 2010 with wins for its Precious Oil and Nourishing Cleanser at the Tara Beauty Awards. It was named Best Scandinavian Skincare Brand and Best Organic Skincare Brand in Scandinavia at the Beauty Shortlist Awards in 2017, took multiple Beauty Shortlist categories in 2018, and was named Best Natural/Organic Brand in Scandinavia in 2024. Individual products have won at the Swedish Beauty Awards, Stockholm Beauty Week, the Scandinavia Global Makeup Awards and Poland's INSTYLE Best Beauty Buy, among others; the award list is published on the brand's own site and is broadly consistent with independent editorial coverage [8].
The brand has been profiled by Scan Magazine and The Beauty Shortlist, the latter featuring it in 2016, and counts the supermodel Ingmari Lamy and the 2018 Vasaloppet winner Lina Korsgren among the figures in its customer testimonials.
Current status
M Picaut is an active, independently run Swedish brand. Its parent company is not publicly identified in available sources. The most recent documented activity includes a 2025 award for its Hydra Barrier Rich Cream at the Organic Beauty Awards and product launches across 2024 and 2025, such as the Ultra Glam Mascara. Its products are sold across the Nordic markets and exported to retailers in Poland and the United States.
