Overview
Maison Matine is a Parisian niche fragrance house founded in 2019 by Marie Kellou and Arthur Ponroy [6]. The company makes graphic, accessibly priced unisex eaux de parfum, and has positioned itself in deliberate contrast to mainstream perfume marketing built on seduction, power and success. Its name plays on two French words: mutine, meaning rebellion, and matin, meaning morning [8].
The brand remains active. It runs a flagship store in Paris, continued to launch new products and categories through 2024 and 2025, and reported sales above six million dollars five years after launch.
Origin and founders
Kellou and Ponroy met working together at a creative agency, and Maison Matine grew out of that background. The company's own history tells the story playfully: the two describe themselves as "HPF (High Potential for Laziness)" who expressed themselves "a bit too much" and were redirected into a new line of work, from which "a freer, more relaxed, and more creative perfumery" was born [1]. The trade publication Beauty Independent reports that the founders previously worked at the design agency Centdegré.
Both arrived with ties to the fragrance world. According to Beauty Independent, Kellou grew up in Grasse, the town in southern France long associated with perfumery, while Ponroy's father, Thibault Ponroy, was previously president of Guerlain [6]. The founders have said they started the brand after noticing that high-end fragrance houses leaned on "seduction, power or success" in their marketing, and wanted to tell a different story.
History and milestones
Maison Matine launched in November 2019. Its first fragrance line, the Origine collection of six unisex eaux de parfum, debuted in 2020 at the Paris boutique Sens Unique [1]. The company developed a second range, called Refresh, during the pandemic in 2021, followed in 2022 by a third collection, Voyager.
International distribution grew over the same period. In 2022 the brand entered the United States through Anthropologie, which carried it in roughly 150 stores, and Beauty Independent reports it later reached around 178 specialty retailers along with Urban Outfitters and Free People [6]. By 2024 the company had expanded beyond perfume into scented hand creams made in Brittany, candles, soaps and pins, and said it had surpassed six million dollars in retail sales while targeting ten million for the year [6]. Its own history page lists further plans for 2025, including pop-up stores and a dedicated Maison Matine boutique.
Philosophy and positioning
Maison Matine frames itself around creativity, commitment and generosity rather than the conventional codes of luxury fragrance. In an interview with Beauty Independent, Kellou said the house "doesn't refer to an act of seduction, power or success as most perfume brands in their marketing approach," describing it instead as being "about creativity, commitment and generosity" [6]. The brand's founding mission, stated on its history page, reads: "No more opulence and sexism, make way for diversity and simplicity" [1].
The fragrances are unisex and the bottles carry illustrated, graphic artwork; the company markets itself under the line "graphic fragrances." Editorial coverage has echoed this framing. Harvey Nichols, the British department store that stocks the brand, has described it as aiming "to appeal to moods, not ages" with "bold, eco-conscious scents."
Products and innovation
The house's catalogue centres on eaux de parfum, organised into themed collections, alongside scented candles, hand creams, soaps and accessories. Named fragrances include Esprit de Contradiction, Into The Wild, Nature Insolente and Ukhu Pacha [7]. According to the company, its perfumes are made with organic wheat alcohol.
Maison Matine emphasises French manufacturing and natural-origin formulation. It states that all its products are designed and made in France, with production partners in Chartres, Grasse, Paris, Nancy, Pleubian and Reims [3]. The company says its perfumes use between 80 and 92 percent natural-origin ingredients, its skincare range a minimum of 94 percent, and that its formulas are palm-oil-free. The fragrances are described as cruelty-free and vegan, with the exception of Into The Wild [4].
Sustainability
The brand's commitments centre on local production and reduced packaging. It says its packaging is made from raw materials such as cardboard, concrete, aluminium and paper, and contains no cellophane "to avoid over-packaging and waste" [3]. Its 50-millilitre bottles are non-refillable but, according to the company's FAQ, fully recyclable. Maison Matine notes that "not everything is perfect," framing its approach as a work in progress rather than a finished standard. No third-party environmental or animal-welfare certifications are listed on its commitments page.
Recognition and press
The brand has been covered by beauty trade and retail media. Beauty Independent profiled its US expansion and sales growth in 2024, and Harvey Nichols featured it in an editorial guide to perfume brands worth knowing.
Current status
Maison Matine is an actively trading independent fragrance house. It operates a flagship store at 14 rue de Marseille in Paris's 10th arrondissement, the district where it began [5], and its most recent visible activity includes the 2024 product-line expansion and stated plans for 2025. Its parent ownership is not publicly documented; the company has not reported any acquisition.
