Summary

Overview

Maison Rebatchi is an independent French perfume house based in Paris, built on collaborations between its self-taught founder and a roster of established master perfumers. It works in the niche, or "confidential", end of fragrance, where small houses sell a limited line of compositions outside the mass market. The brand publicly launched in 2019 with a collection of six fragrances [1], and remains active: in 2024 one of its scents, Vanille Riviera, won a newly created award for young independent brands at the Fragrance Foundation France Awards [5].

The house is the project of Mohamed Rebatchi, a Franco-Algerian who, by his own account, came to perfumery without a family trade behind him. That biography — and the recurring theme of a link between France and the Near East — runs through how the brand presents itself and its fragrances.

Origin and founder

According to the company, Maison Rebatchi grew out of "a life-long dream" of its founder, "a young Franco-Algerian who grew up in a working-class suburb north of Paris." Mohamed Rebatchi was born in Créteil in 1991 to Algerian immigrant parents [3]; the brand recounts that his father was a shopkeeper and his mother a caregiver. By its telling, he became fascinated with perfume at the age of twelve, when he began visiting local perfume shops after school, and later worked at small fragrance-formulation houses, developing accords that drew encouraging feedback.

The turning point the house describes was contacting the perfumer Karine Chevallier, an encounter it credits with opening the door to collaborations with Randa Hammami, Maurice Roucel and Bertrand Duchaufour. On its perfumers page the brand frames these figures in personal terms — Chevallier as a "soul sister", Hammami as the house's "godmother" and mentor, Duchaufour as "the galvanizing artist", and Roucel as "the alchemist". Rather than position Rebatchi as a trained nose, the company stresses that he built the house by gathering experienced perfumers around his idea.

History and milestones

The public launch in 2019 was accompanied by French press coverage across titles including Voici, Le Monde, Cosmétique Hebdo and Dandy, much of it framing Rebatchi as a self-taught newcomer and the house as "emerging". The same year, the brand appeared at the niche-perfume trade shows Esxence in Milan and Pitti Fragranze in Florence, where it drew early editorial attention from specialist outlets [6].

Subsequent releases extended the line and the circle of perfumers. Jasmin Satin, composed by Karine Dubreuil, was reviewed from Pitti Fragranze in 2019 and is dated by later coverage to 2021 [7]. Vanille Riviera, by perfumer Julie Massé, followed in 2023 and became the brand's most decorated fragrance the next year. Retailer listings show a catalogue of roughly eight eaux de parfum, among them Ambre Blanc, Feu Patchouli, Joyeux Osmanthe and Rose Rebatchi [8].

There is a minor discrepancy over the founding date. The brand's own site ties the house to its 2019 launch, supported by a press archive whose earliest entries fall between June and August 2019 [1]; the niche retailer 50-ml.eu and some search listings instead give 2018 [8], which more likely reflects a company-registration or development year than the public debut.

Ownership

Maison Rebatchi is described throughout its own material as the personal house of Mohamed Rebatchi, with no parent company or outside owner identified in available sources. No acquisitions are recorded.

Philosophy and positioning

The house frames its concept around raw materials and creative freedom. Its stated manifesto, quoted in 2019 coverage, is "to highlight the iconic raw materials of perfumery while giving free rein to each perfumer" [1]. In practice, the company says, each invited perfumer was given one or more materials and asked to build a fragrance around them, an approach it presents as producing "an invisible link" between France and the Near East that mirrors the founder's heritage. The brand's tagline is "fragrances with a soul".

Positioning is explicitly at the luxury, small-distribution end. The company refers to a "highly confidential showroom" in Paris and sells through that showroom, a set of physical stockists and its own e-commerce site. Several fragrances draw on North African references; Cuir Tassili, one of the original six, takes its inspiration from the Tassili desert in Algeria.

Products and innovation

Fragrance is the core category, alongside a smaller line of candles. According to the brand, the perfumes are composed and manufactured with Accords & Parfums, a Grasse house it says "furnishes flowers for most auteur perfumers" and which cultivates its own May Rose Absolute [2]. Recurring materials across the line include vanilla, tuberose, jasmine, osmanthus, patchouli and oud-style notes.

The presentation is part of the product story the house tells. It states that the bottles were designed by Pierre and Jules Dinand and carry a mashrabiya motif — a raised, latticework pattern — chosen to reference the founder's origins. The candles, the company says, are handmade from Limoges biscuit porcelain using natural plant-based waxes, and it states the products are certified non-toxic and compliant with European CLP regulations.

Recognition

The brand's clearest external recognition is the 2024 Fragrance Foundation France award for Vanille Riviera, in the category "Best Fragrance from a Young Independent Brand Under Five Years Old" — a prize the foundation created, per trade coverage, "to give more visibility to younger brands" [5].

Specialist perfume critics have covered the house with measured interest rather than uniform praise. The critic Persolaise, reviewing several fragrances in 2022, called them "solid pieces of work" while cautioning against excessive hype around the brand, judging Cuir Tassili "the most original" of the line but also "shrill" [7]. Earlier, the niche blog ÇaFleureBon profiled Jasmin Satin from the 2019 Pitti Fragranze finale.

Current status

The house remains active. Its most recent widely reported milestone is the 2024 Fragrance Foundation France award; the brand site continues to carry a current copyright notice, and the line remains available through niche-perfume retailers in Europe and the United States [5]. The company has also signalled continued expansion, including a previewed collaboration with the perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer.
