Overview
MAKANAI traces to the Yoshitaka gold-leaf foundry in Kanazawa (established 1899). Craftswomen who pounded gold into ultra-thin leaves noticed their hands stayed soft and youthful despite the harsh, dry conditions, thanks to a fermented paste used to treat the washi paper separating the gold leaves. The recipe was passed mother-to-daughter and later modernized by foundry descendant Mayumi Tachikawa into a skincare line.
