Summary

Overview

Malbrum is a niche perfume house founded in Oslo, Norway, and now part of the Italian group Masque Artistic Fragrances. It builds its identity on a contrast between Norwegian quality-focus and French perfumery craft, releasing fragrances in numbered volumes rather than a continuous catalogue. The house remains active: its most recent collection appeared in 2023, and its website was still running under a 2026 copyright.

Independent perfume databases date the company's founding to 2010 [6][9], though the design studio that shaped its packaging records the year as 2016 [11], most likely a reference to the start of that design partnership rather than the corporate founding. The brand's own About page gives no year. The founder is generally credited as Kristian Hilberg, who also uses the moniker "Malbrum"; a 2023 trade review gives his fuller name as Bjorn Kristian Hilberg [8].

Origin and founder

By the company's account, the founder was born in Norway and grew his fascination with perfume from the age of eight, drawn in by what the brand describes as a "sensitive nose" and a "highly curious personality". Malbrum recounts that, as a child, he took apart toys, computers and fireworks to rebuild them louder and faster, and was frustrated that the same could not be done with perfume.

A later period at Carlsberg breweries is described as a turning point: working on beverage production, he encountered the natural-molecule suppliers also used in perfumery. From this, according to the company, came the ambition to build a house focused on the longevity of a scent and the quality of its ingredients, pairing what it calls the focus on quality "that Norway is known for" with a "fearless love for experiments".

The first three fragrances arrived in 2015, developed with the French perfumer Delphine Thierry, who worked from Grasse in Provence. Norwegian coverage at the time noted that the scents were blended and bottled by hand in Norway while composed in Grasse [10], a split the brand frames as bridging northern Europe and the traditional heartland of French perfumery.

History and milestones

Malbrum has released its work in three volumes, each a trilogy. Volume I, "Alchemy Studies", launched in 2015 with Shameless Seducer, Psychotrope and Tigre du Bengale, all composed by Delphine Thierry. Volume II, "Tropical Island", followed in 2016 with Bagheera, Safariyah and Wildfire.

Volume III, "Act of Faith", was presented at the Esxence fair in Milan in 2023 and comprised Paradiso Super, Here Comes The Son and Godspeed, this time composed by the perfumer Cristiano Canali [8]. According to CaFleureBon, the three scents had been in development since 2018. This collection was the first released after the house joined Masque Artistic Fragrances.

Ownership

Since 2023, Malbrum has been part of Masque Artistic Fragrances, the group built around Masque srl, based in Pioltello near Milan [6]. Volume III was the first collection issued under the new parent. The brand continues to be sold directly through the group's Artistic Fragrances e-shop, which ships internationally, alongside the Malbrum website.

Philosophy and positioning

Malbrum presents itself as a maker of "bold and unconventional niche fragrances". Its stated approach favours ingredient quality and a scent's staying power over mass-market convention; the company writes that its "choice of ingredients is based on the feelings they promote and the longevity on the skin". The house frames wearing its perfumes as a way to feel an "alter ego" within "an aura of magnetic attraction", and addresses what it calls "courageous people".

The fragrances are built around essential oils, wood extracts, absolutes and natural molecules, and are sold as high-concentration extrait de parfum in 30 ml bottles. Editorial writers have read the results as deliberately animalic and unconventional: one CaFleureBon reviewer called the early scents "deeply alluring and a little bit wild" [7]. Norwegian coverage reported that the house compares its perfumes to fine vintage wine, on the basis that they shift in character over time [10].

Products

The Malbrum range spans nine fragrances across its three volumes. From Volume I, Shameless Seducer is classified as a floral woody musk for women and men, while Tigre du Bengale is an aromatic, spicy composition built on notes such as tobacco, patchouli and labdanum. Bagheera, from Volume II, pairs suede and leather with darker florals, berries and powdery iris. In Volume III, Paradiso Super is described as a light, musky floral and Here Comes The Son as an airy take on the classic fougère structure.

Recognition

Malbrum's packaging, developed by the Oslo design studio Olssøn Barbieri, drew on vintage pharmacy presentation in carton, paper and beech wood. The work received a Visuelt Diploma in 2015 and a Visuelt Gold in 2017 [11], both awarded for packaging design. The house and its founders have also been profiled in niche perfume publications including Fragrantica, CaFleureBon and the Norwegian title Envelope.
