Overview
Matter of Fact is an American clinical skincare brand founded by Paul Baek and based in Los Angeles. It launched direct-to-consumer in September 2021 with a small line of serums and moisturizers, positioning itself around laboratory testing and published results rather than conventional beauty marketing. The brand built its identity on a single promise — its tagline, "We deliver results without compromise" — and on a proprietary ingredient-stabilizing technology it calls Actisolv.
In 2024 the brand was acquired by Next8 Investments, an investment company formed by two former K18 and Olaplex executives [8]. It continues to operate under that ownership; its website remains live and its product line current.
Origin and founders
Matter of Fact was created by Paul Baek, whose path into skincare was unusual. After studying at Harvard, Baek became a K-pop singer in the early 2000s, and later attended business school at Wharton [7]. According to an industry biography, his frustration with the beauty industry's "demanding beauty standards" pushed him toward several years of research and development before the brand's first products reached the market [10].
The company's founding date is recorded inconsistently across sources, and the brand itself invokes a longer timeline. Trade press consistently dates the public launch to September 28, 2021, when the brand went live as a direct-to-consumer business [7]. A separate figure of 2018 appears in some company databases [13]; this corresponds to the year Baek began planning the brand and rented lab space in Los Angeles, rather than a public launch. The brand's own about page reaches further back still, describing a journey that "began fifteen years ago" — a reference to the founder's early research into combining active ingredients, not to the company's establishment. The September 2021 launch is the date used here as the founding year.
History and milestones
The brand launched in 2021 with roughly $10 million in seed funding and two products: a waterless vitamin C serum and a hydrating cream [7]. The financing came from venture firms including Horizons Ventures, Cowboy Ventures and First Round Capital, alongside individual investors such as Birchbox co-founder Hayley Barna and former Allure editor-in-chief Michelle Lee [6].
In 2023 the company closed a $6 million Series A round and undertook a rebrand with refreshed packaging. The same year, it expanded beyond direct sales into wholesale, debuting on Sephora's website and entering hundreds of Sephora stores across the United States [11]. The following year brought the change of ownership described below.
Ownership
Matter of Fact was acquired in 2024 by Next8 Investments, then a newly formed company, for an undisclosed sum [8]. Next8 was established by Edward Connaghan and Denise Russell, both of whom had held senior roles at the hair-care brand K18 and earlier worked with Olaplex; Connaghan served as president of K18 from 2020 to 2024. At acquisition, trade coverage described Matter of Fact as a "premium US skin care line" that had been "tipped to be a skin care unicorn."
Philosophy and positioning
The company presents itself as an evidence-first, clinical skincare brand. Its stated mission is "to create products that truly work — delivering exceptional results while offering a beautiful experience for your skin," and it holds that skincare "should never require compromise — between results and experience." Matter of Fact frames its candour as a defining trait, summarising its outlook as being "honest to a fault."
This approach was aimed squarely at what one trade publication called "skintellectual" consumers — buyers preoccupied with ingredient research [7] — placing the brand within the wider "prove-it-to-me" turn in skincare during the early 2020s. The company sorts its range into two groups: ACTIVE products built around potent ingredients such as vitamin C and retinol, and NOURISHING products centred on lipids and humectants intended to support the skin barrier.
Products and innovation
The brand's hero product is its Brightening + Firming Serum, built around a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) [8]. Other signature items include a Wrinkle + Texture Concentrate using encapsulated retinol and a Maximalist Age-Defying Moisturizer formulated with peptides and hyaluronic acid. All products are formulated and manufactured in the United States, and the company states that they are not tested on animals and contain no added fragrance.
Central to the brand's marketing is a proprietary technology it names Actisolv, which the company describes as a "patent-protected" system that allows it to "combine, dissolve and stabilize active ingredients … at high concentrations." Matter of Fact says it holds more than ten patent-protected technologies, including a recently awarded patent covering its ingredient-stabilizing delivery system; trade coverage has instead referred to eleven "patent-pending" technologies [8]. The company emphasises third-party clinical testing, stating that it runs studies through independent labs and measures results in three ways — expert grading, instrumental measurement and consumer self-assessment.
Recognition
Matter of Fact's products have appeared in beauty and consumer press, including Vogue, Refinery29, Byrdie and Forbes. Its Maximalist Age-Defying Moisturizer was named "Best Rich Facial Moisturizer" by Allure in 2024.
Controversies
In March 2022, cosmetic chemist Michelle Wong — who holds a chemistry PhD and writes as Lab Muffin Beauty Science — published a critique of the brand's scientific claims [9]. Wong argued that Matter of Fact's "unmatched stability" claim rested on an invalid comparison, because the brand tested its waterless vitamin C serum against water-based serums, which degrade faster by nature. She disputed the company's explanation that erythrulose was responsible for the brown oxidation colour in vitamin C products, and contended that the core formulation of ascorbic acid, urea and propanediol had already been patented by a researcher named Zhang in 2007 — and so did not constitute the breakthrough the brand presented.
Current status
The brand is active but no longer independent: it has been owned by Next8 Investments since the 2024 acquisition. As of 2026 its website remains live and its product line is current, with press citations continuing into 2025. Its retail footprint has historically been concentrated in the United States; the brand's own FAQ states that it ships only within the country, while later trade coverage noted an expansion abroad.
