Summary

Overview

MCM is a German luxury fashion and accessories house founded in 1976 in Munich [1]. It began as Michael Cromer Munich, named after its founder, and built its reputation on leather goods and travel pieces carrying its logo-printed "Cognac Visetos" material. Since 2005 the company has been owned by Sungjoo Group, a South Korean retail business [1], and it remains an active global operator. For beauty buyers, the relevant part of MCM is its fragrance line, produced since 2021 under a worldwide licensing agreement with Inter Parfums [2].

Origin & founders

The house was started in 1976 by Michael Cromer, who gave the company his own initials by way of the label "Michael Cromer Munich" [1]. Headquartered in Munich, it grew through the 1980s into a recognised name in luxury leather goods and accessories, distinguished by a printed monogram material and brass insignia on its heritage bags.

History & milestones

By 1993, at the height of its popularity, MCM operated 250 branches worldwide and recorded sales of around 250 million dollars [1]. That momentum did not hold. In 1995 founder Michael Cromer became the subject of a German tax-evasion investigation, which damaged investor and bank confidence in the company's finances and contributed to a restructuring in 1997 in which the stores and trademark rights were split and sold [1].

The brand was rebuilt under new ownership from 2006 onward, with a relaunch anchored by a Berlin store and later flagships in cities including New York, Paris, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. MCM moved into ready-to-wear in the late 2010s and broadened its reach through capsule collaborations with names such as Puma and Crocs.

Ownership

Worldwide rights to the MCM brand were acquired in 2005 by Sungjoo Group, a South Korean retail company led by Sung-Joo Kim, who became the brand's chairwoman [1]. At the time of the acquisition the brand's global sales stood at roughly 100 million dollars [1]. MCM has remained part of Sungjoo Group since.

Philosophy & positioning

MCM positions itself as what it calls "new school luxury" rather than traditional fashion. Announcing the fragrance partnership, Inter Parfums chairman and chief executive Jean Madar said, "MCM is not about fashion, MCM is new school luxury... It's something that carries more freedom" [2]. The company directs its identity at what it describes as the "21st Century Global Nomad generation" of dreamers, creatives and digital natives, and characterises its audience as genderless, ageless and unconstrained by rules [3]. MCM's then creative director Dirk Schönberger described the house as having a "hedonistic, eclectic feel" and as "more colorful, more expressive than a brand that has 150 years of history" [2].

Products & innovation

MCM's commercial core is luxury leather goods and accessories, with the fragrance line a more recent extension. In 2019 the company signed a ten-year worldwide licensing agreement with Inter Parfums, announced that November, with the first scent launching in 2021 [2]. That debut, MCM Eau de Parfum, was followed by two further releases, MCM ULTRA and ONYX. The fragrances were developed with perfumer Frank Voelkl, who created MCM ULTRA. The brand's best-known visual signature remains its Cognac Visetos logo-printed material, which appears across many of its products.

MCM ULTRA is presented as a vegan formula built around what the brand calls "green chemistry." According to The Perfume Society profile, it contains 79 percent responsibly sourced "Naturals Together" ingredients, with 74 percent of the ingredients described as fully biodegradable [3].

Current status

MCM is an active brand. Its parent operates internationally, and at the time of the Inter Parfums announcement the house was reported to run more than 700 stores across 42 countries [2]. The fragrance line remains in production and continues to expand under the Inter Parfums licence, with the catalogue spanning MCM Eau de Parfum, MCM ULTRA and ONYX, and additional scents reported more recently. Inter Parfums describes MCM as "a luxury lifestyle goods and fashion house founded in 1976" [4].
