Overview
MELALEUKA is a small tea tree oil brand built around a single ingredient: the oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, the Australian tea tree. It sells the oil in pure form and diluted in jojoba oil through a German-language webshop, and it dates itself to 1988 under the slogan "Bestes australisches Teebaumöl seit 1988" ("best Australian tea tree oil since 1988") [1].
What sets the brand apart in its own telling is where the oil comes from. MELALEUKA says its raw material is gathered by hand from old, wild-growing stands in northern New South Wales rather than from plantations, and it presents that wild origin as both a mark of quality and a scarce commodity [5].
Origin
Little is publicly known about how the brand began. Its founders and founding story have not been documented, and the year 1988 comes from the company's own "since" line, repeated on its site as "Das Original - seit 1988" ("the original, since 1988"). That date may refer to the first sale of the oil rather than to the formal registration of a company.
Online pharmacy listings for the brand's 10 ml oil name MELALEUKA GmbH Roderich Krieger as the provider of the product [13]. No source describes who founded the brand, and no parent company or acquisition history is documented.
The brand's name differs by a single letter from Melaleuca, the botanical genus of the tea tree whose oil it sells. On its homepage the company uses the heading "Melaleuka - für alle Fälle!" ("Melaleuka, for every case").
Philosophy and positioning
MELALEUKA presents itself as a single-ingredient specialist. The company describes its oil as unadulterated and left in its natural state, "unverfälscht und naturbelassen", and intended for therapeutic personal care. Four words recur across its pages as a kind of brand motto: natural, effective, versatile and well tolerated ("natürlich, wirksam, vielseitig, verträglich").
The brand also makes a pointed claim about the wider tea tree oil market. According to MELALEUKA, production of wild-harvested Australian tea tree oil is limited to a few tonnes a year and is shrinking as harvesting licences run out. From this the company concludes that the origin of many oils sold as "wild-grown" should be regarded as doubtful at best [5]. The argument positions its own oil as the genuine article in a category where, it suggests, labels and supply do not add up.
Products
The range is narrow. The core product is the pure oil, sold as "Melaleuka.de Öl" in 10 ml, 20 ml, 50 ml and 250 ml bottles and described on the product page as "100 % Melaleuca alternifolia" from wild growth. A second line, "Melaleuka in Jojoba", blends the tea tree oil into jojoba oil, a plant oil commonly used to dilute stronger oils before they are applied to the skin; it comes in 20 ml and 50 ml sizes. A trial package ("Probierpaket") rounds out the own-brand offer.
According to the product page, the oil is made without insecticides or herbicides, is checked for residues, and is extracted by steam distillation, a process in which steam is passed through the plant material to carry off the oil, which the company calls gentle on the active compounds [12].
The webshop also has a care section listing 27 items under the labels CMD, PVD and MN, including face and hand creams, body lotion, a tea tree and hemp shampoo, toothpaste, soap, mouthwash and a lip balm. Several of these product descriptions refer to Australian tea tree oil as an ingredient.
### Efficacy claims
MELALEUKA's pages describe the oil as a broad-spectrum antiseptic ("Breitbandantiseptikum") and list it as acting against fungi, viruses and bacteria, with words such as "antibakteriell", "antiviral", "fungizid" and "prophylaktisch" (preventive) [6]. No clinical studies are cited for these claims.
An online pharmacy listing for the 10 ml oil carries hazard pictograms under the Globally Harmonized System for chemical labelling, indicating that the product is flammable, harmful if swallowed or inhaled, and toxic to aquatic life, and it states that the oil must be kept out of the reach of children [14].
Sourcing
The company places its harvest in Bungawalbyn, in northern New South Wales, where it says the plant material is selected by hand from stands that are hundreds of years old and harvested in an environmentally gentle way [5]. Where the oil is distilled is not stated.
Descriptions of how the raw material is grown are not fully consistent. MELALEUKA's own site speaks of wild collection ("Wildsammlung") and wild growth ("Wildwuchs") [5]. Online pharmacy listings for the same 10 ml product carry the name "Melaleuka Öl biologischer Anbau" ("organic cultivation") and describe it as coming from controlled organic farming, while the same listing also calls it oil "aus selektiertem Wildwuchs", from selected wild growth [14]. No organic certification body is named for the product.
Current status
MELALEUKA is active. As of October 2026 its webshop was online with products available to order, and an online pharmacy listed the 10 ml oil as available for immediate delivery [13]. The brand operates on a small scale with a German-language shop and delivery terms for Germany. No dated product launches, news items or social media accounts have been found, and the brand has not received documented press coverage or awards.
