Summary

Overview

Melem is a Croatian skincare brand founded in 1977 and best known for a multipurpose protective balm that has become a household staple in its home market. It was created in Zagreb by the chemist Ninko Nikšić, and its range has since grown to more than fifty products spanning lip balms, creams and body-care lines.

The brand is now held under Mativa Group through its producer Neva d.o.o. Melem frames its approach as delivering "healthy, beautiful and nurtured skin in just one simple gesture," a positioning it traces back to its founding. It remains active, with continued range expansion and recent market-leadership figures in Croatian lip care.

Origin and founders

Melem was created in 1977 by Ninko Nikšić, a Zagreb-born chemist [7]. By one account he had studied at the Faculty of Chemistry and Technology and worked at Imperial Chemical Industries in Australia and at RMIT before returning to Croatia to pursue his own ventures; the balm followed earlier experiments that included a shoe-softening liquid called Softy and a product named 5 plus gel.

Accounts of the cream's inspiration differ in their detail. One editorial version says Nikšić developed it after visiting a newspaper printing shop and hearing workers complain about their dry hands and wish for a skin-protection cream [6]. Another says a worker told him about a printing press in Sweden where a manager handed protective hand cream to every worker entering the production floor [7]. Both describe the same printing-shop origin. The original formula combined lanolin, beeswax, castor oil and petroleum jelly, and was at first sold only in pharmacies.

The name itself is a common noun of Turkish origin meaning a beneficial salve or balm. After the cream gained popularity it was renamed Zagrebački Melem — "Zagreb's Melem" — to underline its origin, though the geographic qualifier was later dropped [6].

History and milestones

For its first decades Melem circulated chiefly through pharmacies. That changed in the early 2000s, when the cream began appearing in a wider variety of stores. In 2004 the Croatian producer Neva, then part of Atlantic Group, acquired the brand, which brought a broader distribution network and a new visual identity [7]. In 2018 Neva itself was acquired by Magdis from Atlantic Grupa, after which the Melem range expanded past fifty products, adding lip balms, body washes, dry oils, deodorants and sun-care lines [7].

Ownership

Melem's ownership has passed through several hands. The immediate producer is Neva d.o.o., and the brand is presented under Mativa Group as its current parent [8]. Editorial accounts trace the chain from founder Nikšić to Neva under Atlantic Grupa in 2004 and then to Magdis in 2018.

Philosophy and positioning

The company presents Melem as simple, multipurpose care for sensitive skin, summed up in the line "healthy, beautiful and nurtured skin in just one simple gesture," which it dates to 1977 [2]. Its parent group lists the brand's core commitments as simplicity, effectiveness and sustainability [8]. Melem is positioned as a mass-market, multi-generational product; one editorial source described it as "a universal answer for almost every skin problem in Croatia."

Products and innovation

The signature product remains the original protective balm, built on lanolin, beeswax, castor oil and petroleum jelly. The wider range now includes the Melem Lip Balm, the multipurpose Lips & Cheeks & Eyes balms, a Cica Cream aimed at damaged or irritated skin, and a Cold Cream for intensive hydration. The company says its products are free from preservatives and suitable for all ages, including babies [8]; editorial coverage adds that the original formula excludes preservatives, silicone, antibiotics and corticosteroids, making it suitable for infants and pregnant women [7]. The brand states that its products are manufactured in Croatia.

Recognition

Citing Nielsen data, the company states that Melem was the leading brand by both quantity and value in Croatia's lip-care segment between January and December 2023, and the most purchased lip balm in that period [2].

Current status

Melem remains active. It reports a range of more than fifty products, continued additions such as new colours, deodorants and dry oils, and an ongoing retail and online presence, with Croatia as its core market and distribution extending regionally and through export.
