Overview
MERZ SPEZIAL is a German beauty brand built around the idea that skin, hair and nails can be supported from the inside. Its core products are food supplements – sugar-coated tablets known as dragees, capsules, drinkable ampoules and, most recently, a collagen powder – and over the decades it has also sold face masks and creams for use on the skin. The brand traces its start to Friedrich Merz, the pharmacist and chemist who founded the Frankfurt pharmaceutical company Merz in 1908, and it dates the launch of its first product, the Merz Spezial Dragees, to 1964 [1].
The brand belongs to the consumer health arm of the Merz group, known as Merz Consumer Care until 2023 and as Merz Lifecare since then [6]. That business merged with WindStar Medical at the start of 2025, with Merz keeping the majority stake [9]. MERZ SPEZIAL is active, with new packaging introduced in 2025 and a new product announced for autumn 2026.
Origin & founders
Friedrich Merz set up his own pharmaceutical production in Frankfurt am Main in 1908, and the company moved a year later into a former cigarette factory on Eckenheimer Landstraße that still serves as its headquarters. Long before MERZ SPEZIAL existed, the firm was already working in cosmetics: in 1953 it launched Placentubex, an anti-wrinkle moisturising cream.
The dragees followed in 1964. According to the Merz group's own history, Friedrich Merz combined "18 different active ingredients and a special yeast extract" in a product meant to work on beauty from within [10]. The brand's history page describes the aim in similar terms: to influence the skin positively through support from the inside. MERZ SPEZIAL presents this as the founder's "visionary idea" and calls the dragees "the original" for beauty from within.
The launch year is not reported identically everywhere. The brand's own website, its history page and English Wikipedia all give 1964 [6], as does the Merz group's corporate history. A 2015 brand portrait in the German retail trade magazine LEBENSMITTEL PRAXIS instead states that the founder invented the dragees in 1954 [8]. This article follows 1964, the date given by most sources.
History & milestones
The early years were not straightforward. According to the parent company, pharmacists and chemists at first did not know where an ingestible beauty product belonged on their shelves. Merz responded by offering them a course of the dragees lasting several months, so that they could try the product themselves. The brand's own timeline places this in the 1970s and calls it its breakthrough in the beauty market, with pharmacy and drugstore staff invited to take a course of the tablets. The same timeline says that actress Maria Schell trusted and advertised the brand during that decade.
Skin care applied from the outside arrived early. In 1968 Friedrich Merz developed the Placentubex foam mask, which the Merz group says impressed Maria Schell; the 2015 trade portrait describes it as a mask for "the woman without time". In 1972 the brand found the campaign line it still recounts today: "You can eat beauty, because beauty comes from within." Wikipedia notes that the dragees were promoted through the 1970s and 1980s under the slogan "Natural beauty comes from within". In 1978 the brand added topical beauty care alongside its supplements.
The 1980s brought a cream for fresh, healthy skin and, by the end of the decade, a range of foam masks for different skin types, some relaxing and some refreshing. The brand links this to a changing image of women, who it says were becoming more active and sporty while remaining demanding about their beauty care.
Research then returned to the dragees themselves. MERZ SPEZIAL says that early studies had pointed to the uniqueness of the formula, but that only in the 1990s did new scientific findings allow it to be "decoded". This work led to a patent application in 2004 [3]. Single-portion face masks followed in 2006, and in 2014 an intensive concentrate for face and body called Beauty Talent joined the range.
The brand marked its 60th anniversary in 2024 with a redesign that, in the company's words, uses bright colours and stands for gentle elegance and timeless aesthetics. In 2025 the dragees moved into a new glass bottle.
Ownership
MERZ SPEZIAL has never left the Merz group. In 2020 Merz reorganised into three independently operating businesses: Merz Aesthetics, Merz Therapeutics and Merz Consumer Care. Wikipedia describes Merz Consumer Care as the developer and distributor of the group's health, beauty and wellness products, with tetesept and Merz Spezial as its main brands. In May 2023 the consumer business adopted Merz Lifecare as its corporate brand in place of Merz Consumer Care [6].
On 1 January 2025 Merz Lifecare completed a merger with WindStar Medical, a maker of over-the-counter health products founded in 1993 and backed by the investment firm Oakley Capital. Merz holds the majority stake in the resulting Merz Lifecare Holding, and Oakley Capital a minority stake [9]. Trade reports named Xenia Barth as chief executive of the new holding. MERZ SPEZIAL was not sold in the deal and remains a Merz Lifecare brand, alongside tetesept from the Merz side and SOS and Zirkulin from WindStar Medical. Oakley Capital describes the combined business as a provider of health, wellbeing and beauty products in the DACH region of Germany, Austria and Switzerland [11].
The brand's home base is reported in two ways. The 2015 trade portrait lists the brand owner, Merz Consumer Care GmbH, at Eckenheimer Landstraße 100 in Frankfurt [8], the long-standing Merz group headquarters. The brand's Swiss website, by contrast, is operated by Merz Lifecare Switzerland AG in Allschwil, Switzerland [5], which is the local operating company for that market rather than the brand owner.
Philosophy & positioning
The brand's central idea is "beauty from within": the belief that a natural appearance depends on supplying the body with essential micronutrients rather than only treating the surface. "We at Merz Spezial believe that true beauty comes from within," the company states, and it presents its mission as encouraging women at every stage of life to show their natural beauty with confidence.
MERZ SPEZIAL describes its values as quality rooted in tradition, scientific competence and more than 60 years of experience. Its current language draws on newer wellness terms such as "well-ageing", "life-long beauty" and "skin longevity", and it says its approach works "with nature, not against it". The brand also tells customers that they need not follow standardised ideals of beauty. Its current tagline translates as "Strengthen your inner beauty".
As evidence of customer approval, the company cites a June 2014 satisfaction survey of 1,000 women, in which 99 per cent said they would recommend the dragees to a friend [2]. This is a questionnaire of users' opinions, not a clinical study.
Historically, the products have been sold mainly through pharmacies and drugstores, a channel the brand built from the start by courting pharmacy staff.
Products & innovation
The dragees, now sold as Haut, Haare, Nägel Dragees (skin, hair, nails), remain the brand's signature product. According to the company, what sets them apart is a "Micro-Kapillar-Formel" (micro-capillary formula), the formula covered by the 2004 patent application. The current range also includes Haar Kapseln, capsules aimed at hair, and two drinkable ampoule products built around collagen and hyaluronic acid. The brand's history page announces a collagen powder as new from autumn 2026.
Topical products have a long history at MERZ SPEZIAL, from the 1968 foam mask through the creams and mask ranges of the 1980s to single-portion masks and the Beauty Talent concentrate. These masks were still on sale in 2023, when one of them drew the attention of a German consumer-testing magazine.
The brand's main documented environmental measure is the 2025 glass bottle for the dragees. It uses paper labels and can be disposed of with glass waste. MERZ SPEZIAL states that the bottle is 97 per cent recyclable, a figure it says was confirmed by an external testing institute [3]. No third-party certifications for the brand are documented.
Controversies
In its issue 3/2022, the German consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST tested the Merz Spezial Feuchtigkeitsmaske Aloe Vera & Joghurt, a moisturising face mask, and marked it down for containing synthetic polymers, giving it an overall rating of "good". Merz Consumer Care then revised the recipe. A retest published in the June 2023 issue found no synthetic polymers, and the mask's rating was raised to "very good" [7].
Current status
MERZ SPEZIAL is an active brand. Its recent activity includes the 60th-anniversary redesign in 2024, the switch to a glass bottle in 2025 and the collagen powder announced for autumn 2026. The brand presents itself as trusted by women worldwide; independent sources describe its owner's business as centred on Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
