Mesoestetic

Mesoestetic is a Spanish skincare and aesthetic-medicine company based in Viladecans, just outside Barcelona. It develops and manufactures professional skincare, cosmeceuticals and aesthetic-medicine products, and is best known for Cosmelan, a clinic-administered method for treating skin pigmentation. The company describes itself as a pharmaceutical laboratory working at the meeting point of cosmetics and aesthetic medicine, with the stated mission of bringing "trust, clarity, and scientific rigour to the world of beauty."

The brand is owned by mesoestetic Pharma Group, which remains privately held; in an interview, founder Joan Carles Font described it as "a company with no board of directors, no shareholders, we are the owners" [8]. According to the company, its products are sold in more than 100 countries [1], and it remains active, marking its fortieth year in 2025 [2].

Mesoestetic traces its beginnings to a pharmacy on Gran Vía in central Barcelona, run by the pharmacist Joan Carles Font. The brand's own account places its founding in 1985, when Font began making his own skin treatments in the back room of the pharmacy [2]. A 2012 Catalan News report instead gives the founding year as 1984 [7]; the company's own materials and its 2025 "40 years" framing both point to 1985.

By the company's telling, the venture grew out of a gap in the market. Aesthetic medicine was only beginning to take shape in Spain in the 1980s, and the doctors practising it felt their needs were going unmet. Font started working with "master formulas" — custom pharmaceutical preparations — and what had begun as a sideline in the pharmacy gradually became the main business.

The company describes a steady international expansion from the late 1990s onward, reporting sales in more than 50 countries by 1999. Its signature pigmentation treatment, Cosmelan, was launched in 2010, the same year it introduced Mesohyal, a range of customisable anti-ageing solutions.

A series of launches followed through the 2010s: the Mesofiller dermal fillers, the Genesis device and Anestopic — described as the company's first topical medication — all arrived around 2017, with Melanoderm following in 2018 as a second medical specialty. The brand underwent an identity redesign in 2020 and opened its first international subsidiary in Warsaw, Poland, that year, with a further branch in Dubai in 2023. In 2024 it introduced Mesoprotech sunscreens built around a patented technology it calls PHOTON, and reported that a facility expansion had tripled its production capacity. Mesoestetic's range spans anti-ageing, anti-acne, sun protection, body treatments and, most prominently, depigmentation. The brand describes Cosmelan as "the pioneering treatment in the field of skin depigmentation" for severe and resistant blemishes [3]. The method works in two phases — an in-clinic mask applied by an aesthetic professional, followed by an at-home regimen of complementary products used under professional guidance — and targets pigmentation of melanin origin such as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun-related spots. The company states that more than one million patients worldwide have undergone the treatment, which it attributes to an encapsulated complex and a patented molecule [3].

On the science side, the company reports holding several registered patents, among them a molecule it calls melaphenone and a complex named SYN-PIGMENTARGET, both obtained in 2021 [4]. It also created an in-house training arm, the mesoestetic Academy, the same year.

Cosmelan has drawn coverage in the beauty press. Who What Wear published a first-person review of the Cosmelan MD peel in 2022, describing it as "a professional depigmentation peel treatment for melasma" administered in two phases [5]. A 2017 industry profile of Font in the Australian trade title Beauty Directory described Mesoestetic as "a world leader" in depigmenting and brightening solutions [6].

Mesoestetic is active and operates globally. The company manufactures in Spain, reports a presence in more than 100 countries, and announced new launches and a specialised menopause clinic as part of its fortieth-anniversary year in 2025 [2].
