Summary

Overview

Mezel is a French niche fragrance house founded in September 2024 by Sophia Gyé-Jacquot, a Franco-Moroccan entrepreneur [7]. The house builds its identity around a single idea, summed up in its tagline, "Moroccan Heritage. Parisian Flair." — pairing raw materials and rituals drawn from Morocco with French perfumery craft. Its products are made in France, and the company describes itself as a "High Perfumery house blending the best of both worlds."

The brand is small and recently launched, distributing through its own online boutique and a handful of independent perfumeries in Germany and Italy [7].

Thinner sourcing. The article relies largely on the brand's own statements (T2–T3). Glowpedia is seeking independent sources.

Origin and founder

Before starting Mezel, Gyé-Jacquot spent her career in luxury perfumery, working in strategic marketing roles for fragrance houses in Paris and London and leading scent development from concept through to international launch. According to the company, she grew frustrated watching Morocco's and France's perfume legacies "reduced to clichés or diluted into conventional narratives," and set out to create her own house "with the ambition of restoring authenticity to the raw materials, craftsmanship, and the stories they carry."

She frames the project as reinterpretation rather than reproduction. In trade press she described Morocco as "an extraordinarily rich olfactory culture" that is "too seldom told with authenticity," adding that "the aim is not to reproduce these traditions, but to reinterpret them through this dual perspective" [7]. The name itself, the brand says, can be read as "at the dawn of possibilities."

Products

Mezel launched with a collection of five eaux de parfum [7]: Cuir de Pastèque, Néroli Cuivré, Datte Opaline, Café Défendu and Menthe Enivrante. The fragrances were composed by perfumers Julie Massé, Mathilde Bijaoui and Jérôme Di Marino, all of the fragrance house Mane [7]. Several scents take their cue from Moroccan references — Datte Opaline draws on Moroccan marriage traditions, while many compositions feature Moroccan-sourced materials such as iris butter from the Ourika Valley.

The flagship is Cuir de Pastèque, a unisex fragrance built around an unusual conceit: turning watermelon rind into what the brand calls "a chic, exotic (and vegan) leather," paired with Moroccan orris. Its perfumer, Mathilde Bijaoui, described the brief as "a captivating olfactory challenge: to elevate watermelon beyond its forever childish reputation in perfumery." Café Défendu ("forbidden coffee") is among the more unconventional releases, built around contrasts and using cannabis among its notes [8].

The eaux de parfum are sold in refillable bottles whose shape is drawn from the geometric silhouette of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, with labels featuring golden threads meant to represent the meeting of the two cultures. A discovery set of five miniatures is also offered, and the company has said a new "on-the-go" format was due to launch in April 2026 [7].

Sustainability and positioning

Mezel positions itself as a female-led brand with an emphasis on sustainable production. According to the company, every formula is vegan and cruelty-free, free of artificial dyes and BHT, and incorporates upcycled ingredients where possible; the bottles are refillable and made from recyclable and recycled materials containing at least 20% recycled glass. All products, the brand states, are made in France.

Recognition

Mezel's flagship, Cuir de Pastèque, was a 2025 finalist for the Responsible Innovation Award presented by the Fragrance Foundation France [7]. The house has also been covered in trade and niche-perfume press, including a founder profile in Formes de Luxe and a review in the German fragrance blog Aus Liebe Zum Duft [8].

Current status

Mezel is active. As an independent house founded in late 2024, it sells through its own e-boutique — which ships across much of Europe — and through independent perfumeries in Germany and Italy [7]. Editorial coverage from early 2026 and an announced April 2026 product launch indicate continued activity. The brand has no listed physical stockist in Norway, where it is available through cross-border online retail rather than a domestic boutique.
