Micallef, styled M. Micallef, is a French fragrance house founded in 1996 in Grasse by the artist and designer Martine Micallef and her husband Geoffrey Nejman, a former banker [6]. Martine Micallef was born in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in Provence and trained as an artist, working in design, painting and sculpture before turning to perfume; she is credited with the brand's distinctive bottle designs. Geoffrey Nejman, described as a businessman who left a career in banking, co-founded the house with her in 1996 [5]. The two set out to combine their backgrounds, framing each fragrance as a work of art rather than an industrial product.

That outlook shaped how they worked. In a later interview, Nejman said the pair "only brought to market what impressed us and what we loved ourselves" and "never did market studies," while Martine Micallef described creativity as "a big part of the DNA" of the brand. The perfumes themselves have long been associated with the perfumer Jean-Claude Astier, the house "nose."

A defining shift came in 2002, when the founders travelled to the Middle East, discovered oud (agarwood) oil in Dubai, and began blending it into European-style compositions with Astier [7]. The company presents this as an early move into European-made oud fragrances, at a time when the niche-perfume segment was still small; Nejman recalled that only "5 or 6" niche brands existed when they started, a field he estimated had grown to several hundred by 2020 [8].

The Perfume Society notes that the perfumes are "hand-weighed, mixed, macerated and filtered by hand," and that the founders personally select rock crystals and natural essences; some pieces, in a "Collection Crystal," are made with a Swiss goldsmith using 24-carat gold and precious stones.

The catalogue spans collections such as Jewel, Ananda, Secrets of Love and Nectars, with recurring materials including oud, ylang-ylang, rose, vanilla and musk. Signature creations include Mon Parfum, which Martine Micallef has described as a gift from her husband and her "message in a bottle"; Ylang in Gold; Royal Rose Aoud, built on Bulgarian rose with oud; and the Ananda line, noted for crystal-adorned bottles. The company says its juices can contain up to 200 natural ingredients per composition [1]. It also offers personalisation services such as hand engraving of bottles, alongside refillable formats.

On sourcing, Micallef describes itself as the exclusive partner of a Grasse estate that supplies flowers for its compositions year-round, summarising the approach as "from flower to bottle" [6].
