Summary

Overview

Montibello is a Spanish professional cosmetics company founded in Barcelona in 1967. It develops and manufactures haircare and skincare sold through the professional salon channel rather than to the general public, and operates under the legal entity Cosmética Cosbar, S.L. [2]. The company describes itself as Spain's first fully professional cosmetics firm and says it serves about a third of Spanish salons [5].

The brand began as a hair-colour line called Diapo, which the company says became the leader of Spain's professional hair-colour market by 1970 [6]. Over five decades it broadened into skincare and esthetics while keeping its salon-only distribution model, and it remains active, with a new haircare line launched in 2023.

Origin and founders

Montibello was founded in 1967 in the Poblenou district of Barcelona by Francesc Adam, a chemist who was 27 at the time, together with Francisco Muria, a commercial director [9]. The two combined backgrounds in chemistry and commerce to make hair-care products aimed exclusively at professionals, and according to the Beauty Cluster industry association they raised their initial financing from family and friends [9]. The first product line, Diapo, established the young company in the salon hair-colour trade and, by the company's account, led that market in Spain within three years [6].

As the business grew it outgrew its original Poblenou premises and relocated to El Prat de Llobregat, on the edge of Barcelona, in 1975 [9]. The company has kept its research and manufacturing in-house, describing an operation that runs "from research to manufacturing" at its own facilities.

History and milestones

The company's own timeline marks several stages of growth. After Diapo's early lead in hair colour, Montibello inaugurated new headquarters in 1975 and expanded into skincare in 1980 [6]. A 10,000-square-metre logistics centre followed in 2002, and the company dates the start of its global expansion to 2008. It marked its 50th anniversary in 2017.

In 2023 Montibello launched hop, a haircare line built on what it calls algae bioscience, which it presents as "a new era in haircare" [6]. The hair-colour heritage continued through products such as Cromatone, which the company names alongside the original Diapo as its most emblematic line.

Ownership

Montibello is operated by Cosmética Cosbar, S.L., the company's registered legal entity [2]. It began as, and the company continues to describe itself as, a family business. Co-founder Francesc Adam led the firm until his death on 6 November 2020, which the Beauty Cluster association attributed to respiratory insufficiency [9]; the company has remained in operation since.

Philosophy and positioning

Montibello positions itself around what it calls holistic care for hair and skin, under the tagline "Beyond Beauty." The company says it is "dedicated to redefining beauty beyond the physical, creating innovative experiences that care for hair, skin, people and the planet." Internally it frames its identity around three stated values it groups under passion: passion for its work, for innovation, and for professionalism.

A defining feature is its distribution model: products are sold exclusively through the professional channel, to salons and estheticians, rather than at retail. The company describes its purpose as supplying professionals with products "that elevate their business," supported by training programmes, an e-learning platform and salon-locator tools for practitioners.

Products and innovation

Montibello is organised into two divisions, haircare and skincare. The haircare side spans colour and treatment lines including Cromatone, the lightening range luxlight, the hybrid colour system Under, and Dénuée, which the company describes as the first and only ammonia-free, water-based hair colour. Its 2023 hop range is built around algae bioscience and is presented as addressing several signs of hair wellness.

The skincare division markets professional esthetic treatments across facial, body and sun-care ranges. These include Arûde, framed by the company around the idea of skin longevity; Prolagenist, described as a new generation of vegan collagen; and Sun Age, which features a proprietary ingredient complex the company calls Blue Oleactif and positions as protection against UV, high-energy visible light, infrared and pollution [8]. Formulations draw on ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, retinoids, niacinamide, prebiotics and exosomes.

Across both divisions the company states that its products are "100% vegan, powered by clinically proven natural ingredients that are sourced from accredited providers" [5], and it emphasises vegan formulas, a high proportion of natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging as part of its sustainability messaging. No third-party certifications appear in the company's stated materials.

Recognition

Montibello's standing in its home market has been noted by the Spanish beauty industry. In a 2020 obituary of founder Francesc Adam, the Beauty Cluster association described the company as a leading Spanish firm in the professional cosmetics sector by customer numbers, with an international presence spanning America, Europe and Asia and a notable footprint in Chile, Poland and England [9]. An independent salon review from Johor Bahru, Malaysia, characterised Montibello as "a professional haircare brand from Spain with a strong focus on innovation and sustainability," highlighting its sulphate-free and ammonia-free or low-ammonia formulas [10].

Current status

Montibello is an active, operating professional cosmetics company headquartered in El Prat de Llobregat. Its most recent major launch was the hop haircare line in 2023, and it maintains separate active hair and skincare divisions with current social channels [6]. Its core market remains Spain, where it says it serves about a third of salons, alongside an international presence across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
