Overview
Moschino is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in Milan in 1983 by the designer Franco Moschino, known for over-the-top, campy designs that set themselves against the conventions of the traditional fashion system [6]. Alongside ready-to-wear, accessories and eyewear, the house runs a fragrance line, and it is that fragrance business — produced under licence by the Italian company Euroitalia — that places Moschino on the beauty market. The brand remains active: a new creative director took over in early 2024, and a fragrance campaign was running in 2026.
The company is wholly owned by the Italian group Aeffe S.p.A., which sits alongside sister labels including Alberta Ferretti and Pollini.
Origin and founders
Franco Moschino established the house that carries his name in Milan in 1983. From the start it positioned itself, in the words of one brand account, as "an alternative to the traditional fashion system" — a manifesto the company says has defined its identity ever since. The style was deliberately ironic and provocative: Aeffe describes it as an "expressive style marked by irony, fun, and provocation," while the brand itself frames its aesthetic as surreal, scathing and irreverent, built around a spirit of joy.
Franco Moschino died in 1994 from causes related to HIV/AIDS [6]. His longtime collaborator Rossella Jardini took over as creative director and led the house until 2013.
History and milestones
The fragrance partnership that defines Moschino's beauty presence began in 1988, when Euroitalia acquired the Moschino fragrance licence — the start, in Euroitalia's telling, of a success story lasting more than thirty years [5]. One early high point came in 1995 with Cheap & Chic, described by the licensee as an internationally successful scent whose bottle design was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York [5].
After Jardini's tenure, the American designer Jeremy Scott served as creative director from 2013 to 2023, a period associated with the brand's pop-culture maximalism. Following his departure the house named Davide Renne creative director in October 2023, but he died the next month at the age of 46. In January 2024 the Argentine designer Adrian Appiolaza took the role.
Ownership
Moschino joined Aeffe S.p.A. in 1999 [6]. For years Aeffe held a majority but not the whole company; in 2021 it acquired the remaining 30 percent stake for more than 66.5 million euros, taking full control [9]. Executive chairman Massimo Ferretti called the brand "strategic" and described the move as a step in the group's medium- to long-term growth strategy. Within the Aeffe portfolio Moschino sits beside Alberta Ferretti and Pollini.
The fragrance line operates on a separate footing: rather than being made in-house, Moschino scents are manufactured by Euroitalia, the licensee that has produced them since 1988.
Philosophy and positioning
Moschino presents itself as a counterpoint to mainstream fashion, leaning on irony, humour and provocation rather than restraint. The company describes its identity through the recurring idea of offering "an alternative to the traditional fashion system," and its fragrance arm carries the same playful tone into bottle design and marketing. Wikipedia and the brand's own materials both characterise the house through its camp, maximalist sensibility.
Products and innovation
On the beauty side, Moschino is best known for its fragrances, several of which trade on the brand's sense of humour. The Toy line — including Toy 2, Toy Boy, Toy Boy 2 and the Toy 2 Gummy editions — uses a teddy-bear bottle that doubles as one of the house's recurring motifs. The earlier Cheap & Chic, launched in 1995, remains a reference point, its bottle having been exhibited at MoMA.
A 2020 review of Toy Boy by the fragrance site Now Smell This credited perfumer Yann Vasnier and singled out the bear bottle, describing a "creamy 'cosmetic' rose" at the centre of the scent while reaching a mixed overall verdict [8]. The fragrances are positioned at the prestige end of the market, in keeping with the house's framing as a luxury label.
Recognition and press
Controversies
Two episodes from the mid-2010s have drawn attention. In a dispute running from 2015 to 2016, the graffiti artist Rime (Joseph Tierney) sued over the use of his artwork; the matter was settled in 2016 [6]. The same year, the retailer Nordstrom removed Moschino pill-themed merchandise amid concerns that it trivialised the opioid epidemic [6].
Current status
Moschino is an active fashion house with a global presence. Its fragrance line continues under Euroitalia, with a Toy 2 Gummy campaign running in 2026, and the house has a sitting creative director, Adrian Appiolaza, appointed in January 2024 [7]. Ownership rests entirely with Aeffe S.p.A.
