Summary

Overview

Mountaineer Brand is an American men's grooming company based in Martinsburg, West Virginia, that makes all-natural beard, bald-head and body care products. It was founded by Eric Young, who started mixing his own beard oil at home before turning the recipe into a family-run business. The company sells direct to consumers and, since 2018, through Walmart, and it remains active — its blog and social channels were still posting through 2024 and into early 2025 [6].

The brand's identity is rooted in Appalachia. It describes its products as handmade in small batches and inspired by what it calls age-old methods and ingredients tied to West Virginian heritage, and it markets that regional craftsmanship as central to its character.

Origin and founders

The company traces its start to Eric Young, who grew a beard and went looking for a way to manage the dryness and irritation that came with it. After finding beard conditioning oil online priced at roughly $20 an ounce, he decided the cost was unjustified and made his own instead, spending about $50 on bottles and ingredients and experimenting over his kitchen stove [8]. Friends asked for the formula, and Young began producing small batches for extra income, listing the results under the Mountaineer Brand name on eBay and Amazon.

The decision to use only natural ingredients was personal. Young, a widower, lost his first wife and his mother to cancer, which he says led him to question what goes on and in the body as much as what goes in it. "After losing my first wife to cancer, I started questioning everything we put on and in our bodies," he writes, adding that the company makes everything itself. The business is run as a family operation: Young serves as founder and CEO, and his sister Meredith Young as chief operating officer.

The exact founding date is recorded slightly differently across sources. The company consistently dates itself to 2013, and its Instagram name reads "est. 2013" [1]. A regional feature in WV Living notes that Young began selling shortly after taking a National Guard armory maintenance job in October 2012, placing the start nearer 2012–2013 [8].

History and milestones

What began as a kitchen operation grew quickly. According to WV Living, Young's profits exceeded his children's survivor benefits within four months of his first sale, and by July 2015 the business had grown enough for him to leave his armory job [8]. The company expanded from the kitchen into a roughly 1,600-square-foot shop, and by 2017 had moved into a larger second-floor industrial workshop.

In 2018, Mountaineer Brand's all-natural beard care line debuted in Walmart stores, a step into national retail distribution [10]. Alongside its US business, the company has worked with international distribution partners; WV Living reported deals reaching Sweden — including an initial order of 6,300 items — as well as Canada and Russia [8]. The product range, first centered on beard care, later widened into shaving products and a family care line named after Young's great-grandmother, Granny Vicars.

The brand's headquarters is given as Martinsburg, West Virginia, on its current site, at 54 GM Access Rd [1]. The earlier WV Living feature, which dates from around 2015, located the company in Moorefield, West Virginia, before a later relocation [8]; both addresses are within the state.

Philosophy and positioning

Mountaineer Brand positions itself as an affordable, all-natural alternative in men's grooming, with a stated mission to "offer the finest all-natural men's grooming products on the market at a fair price" [1]. Central to its presentation is a transparency claim the company sums up as a "what you see is what you get" approach: every product listing carries a full ingredient list so customers can read the contents before buying.

Its values, as the company states them, center on natural ingredients, West Virginia craftsmanship, transparency, affordability and small-batch production. The brand backs its products with a 365-day money-back guarantee and a "no questions asked" return policy.

Products and innovation

The catalogue spans three main areas: beard care (wash, conditioner, oil, balm, mustache wax and shave oil), bald-head care (exfoliator, cleanser, moisturizer and pH balancer), and body care (deodorant, body wash, bar soap and body spray), along with kits and subscriptions. Beard oil and beard balm are core products, and the company also markets a Beard Growth System.

Formulations draw on plant- and earth-derived ingredients such as coconut, jojoba, castor and avocado oils, shea and cocoa butter, beeswax and essential oils, with other components including activated charcoal, aloe vera, pine tar oil and raw apple cider vinegar. The company is explicit that its scents come only from essential oils: the fragrances, it states, are "achieved using a unique blend of 100% natural essential oils, completely void of any synthetic or artificial fragrances." On beard oil specifically, the brand is careful to note in its FAQ that the product conditions and hydrates rather than stimulating growth — "it's not a growth serum." Products are made in small batches in West Virginia; the company notes that they are produced in an environment where almond products are also used. No vegan or cruelty-free certifications are listed on the site.

Recognition

Beyond the brand's own materials, Mountaineer Brand has been the subject of a WV Living feature, "Whisker Business," profiling Young and the company's origins and growth. Its 2018 entry into Walmart was announced via a Business Wire release [10].
