Overview
MUA Makeup Academy is a British high-street cosmetics brand based in Irlam, Greater Manchester. It launched in 2010 as a budget makeup range sold exclusively through the pharmacy chain Superdrug, with every item priced at £1 — described in contemporaneous coverage as the lowest-priced cosmetics collection then available in the United Kingdom [10]. The brand remains active, selling online and across selected European markets, and now positions itself around affordable, fully vegan and cruelty-free makeup.
The exact year of origin is recorded two ways. The brand dates itself to 2010, the year the cosmetics range first appeared [5]; the UK operating company behind it, FB Beauty Ltd, was incorporated a year earlier, on 5 August 2009 [6], and LinkedIn lists 2009 as the founding year on that basis [8]. The 2010 launch is the brand's own user-facing milestone, while 2009 reflects the legal entity's registration.
Origin
MUA arrived on Superdrug shelves in April 2010 as a £1-per-item range, an unusually low price point for cosmetics at the time. Early products included pressed powders, eyedust, clear mascara and glitter eyeliner. A UK beauty blog covering the launch wrote that "there's no getting away from the fact this is the best priced cosmetics collection available in the country" [10]. The names of the brand's founders are not part of the public record.
History and milestones
The range broadened over the following decade. In 2018 the company introduced its Pro/Base line alongside its first skincare products — a four-piece set comprising Smooth Set & Prime Blur, a Makeup Remover Stick, a Soothe & Cool Primer Stick and a Softening Facial Oil stick, each retailing at £4 [9]. In 2020 MUA reformulated its products to be talc-free. In February 2023 the brand joined Superdrug Marketplace, broadening its direct retail presence beyond the in-store range [15]. In April 2026 MUA Makeup Academy, together with its owner Wormser UK, became a patron of the British Beauty Council, joining a board of more than 80 brands [5].
Ownership
Two corporate entities sit behind the brand, and sources describe them differently. Wormser UK states on its own site that it "is home to and owner of the brand MUA MAKEUP ACADEMY" [7], presenting itself as a private-label and branded beauty supplier with more than 30 years of experience. FB Beauty Ltd — registered at the same Irlam address and classified under the wholesale of perfume and cosmetics — is the UK operating company, and is the entity LinkedIn lists as the parent [6][8]. In practice Wormser UK is identified as the brand owner and FB Beauty Ltd as the UK legal and trading entity.
Philosophy and positioning
MUA presents itself as a high-street brand built on the idea that "makeup should be affordable for all," according to its own statement of values. The company describes its range as 100% vegan and cruelty-free, and emphasises inclusive shade offerings, minimal retouching and the use of real skin in its product imagery. Its stated values centre on affordability, inclusivity and sharing expertise to inform customers, summed up in the tagline "Makeup Unites All."
Products and innovation
The brand's catalogue centres on colour cosmetics for the face, eyes and lips, sold at drugstore prices. Among its named products are the Pro/Base Full Coverage Long Wear Matte Finish Foundation, the Power Pout retractable lip crayon, and the Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer, a richly pigmented lip product the brand describes as a velvet-matte lacquer. MUA states that its products are certified cruelty-free under the Leaping Bunny programme.
Sustainability
MUA describes a series of sourcing and packaging commitments. According to the company, all of its products have been talc-free since 2020, its palm-oil ingredients are RSPO-certified, and its mica is sourced from suppliers it describes as certified responsible. Retail listings note that more than 80% of the range includes packaging with at least 30% post-consumer recycled content. The brand holds Leaping Bunny cruelty-free certification.
Current status
MUA Makeup Academy is active. It operates an e-commerce store, publishes regular blog posts — the most recent in April 2026 — and continues to expand its product lines. The brand ships within the United Kingdom and to selected European territories, with currency options covering markets including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, and it has sold through Superdrug Marketplace since February 2023.
