Summary

Overview

Natura Bissé is a Spanish luxury skincare company founded in Barcelona in 1979 by Ricardo Fisas and Gloria Vergés [1]. It develops high-concentration treatment products and spa rituals positioned at the prestige end of the market, and remains family-owned and independent, with operations the company reports across more than 60 countries.

The brand is known for its Diamond collection of anti-aging products and for spa treatments that have become fixtures of awards-season skin prep in Hollywood. It continues to expand, opening an Italian subsidiary in 2025.

Origin & founders

The company grew out of an unlikely observation. Ricardo Fisas started the business after losing his job managing a livestock-feed factory, having noticed that workers who handled proteins in the plant had unusually soft hands [6]. He developed his first creams around the theory that free-form amino acids were responsible, and the discovery of those amino acids' cosmetic effects is dated by the company to its 1979 launch. His wife, Gloria Vergés, invested heavily in research and development alongside him.

The name pairs two ideas: a play on the word "natural," and a nod to the actress Jacqueline Bisset, who according to WWD epitomised glamour to Fisas [6]. Early formulas centred on marine extracts and botanical ingredients.

History & milestones

Natura Bissé first reached the United States and then re-entered the market in 1995, securing placement in Neiman Marcus, Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman and opening a subsidiary in Dallas. In 2000 it launched the Diamond Extreme anti-aging cream, which anchored what became its best-known product line. By the time of Fisas's death in 2012, the company had grown to more than 300 products and remained a family-owned private business; WWD reported annual revenue of roughly 34 million euros at that point [6].

Fisas retired in 2007 and died in January 2012 at the age of 83 from injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Barcelona; his children Veronica, Patricia and Ricardo took over management. The company completed a new headquarters, the 15,000-square-metre Casa-Fábrica in Barcelona, in 2021.

Ownership

Natura Bissé describes itself as family-owned and independent [3]. No parent company or acquisition history is recorded in the available sources. In 2022 it received an Ernst & Young Family Enterprise Award.

Philosophy & positioning

The company frames skin as individual and constantly changing, arguing that a skincare routine should adapt to the person rather than the reverse. Its stated purpose is "to take care of people's skin and their sense of well-being at every stage of life," and it lists honesty, excellence and teamwork among its core values [1]. Alongside active ingredients, Natura Bissé emphasises what it calls "the power of touch" — describing touch as "listening, understanding, and empathizing" — and applies the idea across both home-care products and spa treatments. The brand operates at the luxury tier: The Dermatology Review noted that its products are expensive, citing the Diamond Life Infusion at 960 dollars [8].

Products & innovation

The range spans more than 150 skincare products organised into collections including Diamond Age-Defying, Inhibit, Essential Shock, C+C Vitamin, NB·Ceutical, Oxygen and Stabilizing. Hero ingredients run from amino acids and proteoglycans to vitamin C, marine extracts and prebiotics. Within the Diamond Age-Defying line, the Life Infusion product features what the company describes as patented "Bio-Magnet Nanosomes," based on magnetite.

Two products carry the brand's reputation beyond its own catalogue. The Diamond Extreme Serum was singled out by makeup artist Molly R. Stern, who prepped clients for the Oscars red carpet, in a 2022 Variety roundup of celebrity skin preparation [9]. Separately, the brand's Bubble Pure Air treatment — a portable structure that delivers what Organic Authority reported as 99.995 percent pure oxygen and travels to spas around the world — became an editorial talking point in luxury-spa coverage [7].

Sustainability

Products are conceived, designed and manufactured in-house at the Barcelona facility, which the company says adheres to European Good Manufacturing Practices certification and U.S. FDA guidelines [3]. Natura Bissé reports moving to FSC-certified paper and cardboard packaging and incorporating recycled plastic, and states that its Casa-Fábrica headquarters achieves roughly 50 percent savings in primary energy and over 35 percent lower CO2 emissions through its building-management systems. The company also reports a predominantly female workforce, including among its laboratory scientists.

Philanthropy is run through the Ricardo Fisas Natura Bissé Foundation, established in 2008, which the company says receives at least 0.7 percent of global revenue [3]. Its programmes include training aestheticians to support cancer patients with skin side effects and backing educational work for children with learning differences.

Recognition

Natura Bissé has been named World's Best Spa Brand at the World Spa Awards multiple times, including in 2018 through 2021 and again in 2025, and was nominated a sixth time for 2026 [5]. It was recognised in the Sustainable Innovation category at the 2024 Forbes-UBS Sustainability Awards. From 2017 to 2020 it held a Forbes Travel Guide "Official Skincare Brand" distinction, which the brand notes was the first time Forbes named a beauty brand in that role.

Controversies

In its review, The Dermatology Review flagged that Natura Bissé products contain some parabens — a class of preservatives it described as controversial for potential hormone-disrupting effects — and concluded that, in its opinion, the products were not worth their high cost [8]. This is an editorial formulation critique rather than a wider dispute.

Current status

Natura Bissé is active and globally distributed. It opened an Italian subsidiary in 2025 and won the World's Best Spa Brand award that year. Reporting on its distribution breadth varies by source and over time: the company's site states a presence in more than 60 countries [1], while The Dermatology Review cited 36 countries [8] — a figure that likely reflects an earlier point in the brand's expansion.
