Summary

Overview

neemen is a German men's skincare and haircare brand based in Hamburg, built around extract from the neem tree. Its name combines "neem" and "men," and its products grew out of a tree-plantation project in Mauritania rather than the other way around. The brand was established in 2019 [8], developing natural, vegan and cruelty-free care products for men. As of mid-2026 it appears dormant: its own webshop lists no products and its news blog is empty, and the most recent datable activity found anywhere is a February 2022 interview post [7].

Origin & founders

neemen describes an unusual sequence of events: the social and agricultural project came first, and the cosmetics brand followed. According to the company, after an extreme drought across large parts of Africa, an experienced biochemist traveled to Mauritania to start a plantation project and chose the neem tree as the crop, citing its ability to survive harsh conditions and its more than 100 chemical compounds. The first 300 neem trees were planted on the new plantation in 2007 [1].

The biochemist is named on the brand's own pages as Dr. Klaus-Peter Radtke, described as the initiator of the Mauritania plantation. To turn the plantation into a consumer brand he recruited two associates, including a cosmetics specialist, Katharina Jahrling, who came from the industry. Together they founded what the company calls "the natural cosmetics brand with social roots."

Sources differ on when the reforestation work began. The brand's own About page dates the first planting to 2007 [1], while a Hamburg editorial profile states that Radtke has been reforesting parts of the Mauritanian desert since 2012 [8]. The two figures may describe different stages — an initial agricultural plantation followed by wider desert reforestation — but they are not reconciled in the available sources.

Philosophy & positioning

The neem tree functions as more than a raw-material source for neemen; the company frames it as the brand's whole philosophy, arguing that people can only exist together with nature. Its stated tagline is "Gute Hautpflege wächst an Bäumen" — good skincare grows on trees.

neemen positions its range as men's care but presents this as inspiration rather than restriction. Company copy stresses that the products suit any gender and that there are no fixed routines or rules for using them, alongside an emphasis on simple application and what it calls an effective composition. The brand also defines sustainability broadly, treating social responsibility — and specifically the goal of lifting the Mauritanian plantation community out of poverty — as part of the same commitment as environmental protection.

Products & innovation

The core range is a five-product line of skincare and grooming items: CLEAN Refreshing Wash 4 in 1, CARE Moisturising Cream, SOFT Calming Oil Face & Beard, EXTRA Rich Balm Face & Body, and PROTECT Outdoor Spray [9]. Prices at third-party retailers place it in premium men's grooming, with the moisturiser and oils listed around the upper end of the line.

At the center of the formulas is a proprietary blend the company markets as the Treemune-System®, a name merging "tree" and "immune." The brand describes it as a combination of neem extract, prebiotics and so-called extremophile plants — species adapted to extreme environments — including prickly pear, the resurrection plant, wormwood, moss, lemongrass and white snow tea. According to neemen, the system is meant to strengthen the skin barrier, support the skin's microbiome and make skin more resilient, and the brand states its products are dermatologically tested, pH neutral and free of microplastics. In a founder interview, Radtke said neem protects skin from inflammation, reduces redness, counters fungal growth and acts as an antibacterial [7].

Sustainability

Sustainability is central to how neemen presents itself, in both environmental and social terms. The company says it uses high-quality ingredients and climate-neutral production, that its packaging is recyclable and its folding boxes are 100% FSC-certified, and that it aims to move to more resource-efficient packaging. Raw materials, it states, come from the brand's own plantation in Mauritania, where investment in infrastructure — fencing, housing, a well, a water tower and solar panels — has connected the plantation and the local village to the power grid and, the company says, made it possible to grow additional crops and keep livestock. The brand frames the plantation's main purpose as giving local people a livelihood and a route out of poverty.

Recognition

neemen's packaging — cuboid bottles designed for the men's range — has a project entry with the Red Dot Design Award, and the brand has been profiled by DACH beauty retailers and a Hamburg local-brand editorial series.

Current status

neemen appears to be dormant. Its static information pages — About, the Treemune-System® page and the FAQ — remain online, but its own Shopify storefront shows an empty product collection and an empty news blog [6]. Products were still listed at third-party retailers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but no recent first-party activity could be found, and the latest datable content is a founder interview dated 8 February 2022 [7]. The company's own shop ships within Germany only, giving the brand a single-country first-party footprint with wider reseller reach across the German-speaking market.
