Overview
Nippes, formally Brothers Nippes GmbH & Co. KG, is a German family manufactory that makes manicure and pedicure instruments by hand in Solingen. Brothers Ernst and Friedrich Nippes founded the company in 1923, during the hyperinflation crisis of the Weimar Republic, starting steel-goods production in a cottage workshop in the Widdert district of the city [3]. More than a century later it remains owner-operated and still based in Solingen, the western German city long associated with cutlery and bladed tools.
The company describes itself as a "factory for fine steel goods" specialising in high-quality manicure and pedicure instruments [1]. Its output sits in the grooming and nail-tools category rather than cosmetics: scissors, nail clippers, nippers, tweezers, files and complete cased sets. The brand promise it states is "Höchste Qualität, ein Leben lang" — highest quality, a lifetime.
Origin and founders
Ernst and Friedrich Nippes began their steel-goods production in 1923 in an old cottage, or Kotten, in Widdert, a workshop type characteristic of the surrounding Bergisches Land region. From the start the company emphasised what it calls "Solinger Qualität" — Solingen quality through traditional handwork. The founding coincided with one of Germany's most severe economic crises, when runaway inflation was destroying the value of the currency.
The Nippes name has stayed with the business across three generations. Horst Nippes, of the second generation, led the company for roughly 50 years and is credited with driving its international expansion, according to the company's own account. Markus Nippes took over as third-generation owner in 2002 and continued the export-focused strategy [2].
Manufacturing and philosophy
Production remains in Solingen, where the company says it manufactures exclusively to maintain its standards. The operation is owner-operated with around 30 employees, several of whom the company notes have long tenures [3]. Nippes presents itself as a "manufactory by conviction," using the Latin phrase "manu factum" — made by hand — to describe a practice it says has continued for over a century.
The brand's stated approach blends old and new: traditional craftsmanship combined with what it calls state-of-the-art precision tools, working from the principle that "the best precision machine cannot replace the human hand" [3]. According to the company, its scissors are made from Solingen steel and most are ground by hand on precision grinding machines, a process it describes as requiring considerable skill and years of experience. The firm also cites ISO 9001 certification for its quality management [2].
Solingen itself is central to how the company positions its products. Known historically as the "City of Blades," the city has produced cutlery since the medieval period, and a 1938 German regulation known as the Solingen Decree restricts the "Made in Solingen" designation to goods manufactured entirely in the city under defined standards [6]. By producing solely in Solingen, Nippes operates within that protected geographic mark.
Products
Nippes' range centres on hand-held grooming and nail-care tools. The company lists manicure instruments including sapphire and glass nail files and skin pliers, and pedicure tools such as nail pliers, clippers and scissors [4]. Other lines include tweezers, nippers, and tick-removal tools. Among its more traditional offerings are leather-cased manicure sets, described as a complete package of classical instruments. The company also markets a professional "Stainless" line aimed at manicure and nail specialists.
Market and distribution
Pharmacies are the company's primary sales channel. Nippes states that it supplies roughly half of Germany's approximately 20,000 pharmacies [2]. Internationally, the company reports exporting to around 50 countries, with roughly 60 percent of its revenue generated abroad [2]. A separate US distributor, Nippes USA, markets the instruments in the United States and echoes the brand's German-manufacturing and longevity claims [5].
Current status
Nippes is an active, owner-managed business. It reached its 100-year anniversary in 2023, having been founded in 1923, and continues to operate from Solingen under third-generation ownership while exporting internationally [2].
