Summary

Overview

NJORD is a Danish men's grooming brand that makes skincare, beard care, haircare and shaving products. The brand states it was founded in 2016 in Denmark, with the stated aim of creating grooming products suited to the Scandinavian climate [2]. It is owned by the Danish e-commerce company Firtal Group, which has been part of the national health and beauty retailer Matas A/S since 2018 [4]. The brand remains active, though its distribution appears concentrated in Denmark rather than across the wider Nordic region.

The name comes from Njord, the Norse god of the wind and sea, which the company frames as a symbol of strength, freshness and harmony with the elements.

Origin & founders

NJORD grew out of Firtal Group, a Danish online retailer founded in 2007 that operates the men's grooming store Made4men.dk. The brand presents its origin as a response to a practical problem: dry skin after winter, itchy beards and hair damaged by the cold. According to the company, NJORD "was born from a passion for male grooming — and from a need for products that could actually handle the Scandinavian climate" [2].

The founding date is recorded differently across sources. The brand's own site gives 2016 as the founding year [2], while the business database CompanyOnTop states that Firtal "developed and launched" the brand in 2014 [6]. The most likely reading is that 2014 marks the start of internal development and 2016 the public consumer launch. No individual founders are publicly credited; the brand was developed within Firtal rather than by a named creator.

Ownership

NJORD sits inside the Firtal Group portfolio, which also includes Made4men.dk, Helsebixen.dk, Well.dk and Jala-helsekost.dk. In August 2018, Firtal Group was acquired by Matas A/S, described as Denmark's largest health and beauty retailer [4]. Through that chain, NJORD is ultimately owned by Matas.

Philosophy & positioning

The brand positions itself around a stripped-back, functional idea of male grooming. Its stated philosophy is "no unnecessary additives, no complicated routines — only products that work, developed by men, for men" [2], and its mission, as the company puts it, is "to deliver high-quality grooming products for men that combine effectiveness, authenticity, and great value." The tagline "Created by men - for men. Perfected for the Nordic" reinforces a masculine, climate-focused identity. NJORD is priced as an affordable, drugstore-level range rather than a premium one.

Products & innovation

NJORD's range spans skincare, beard care, shaving and haircare. Signature items include a sandalwood-scented Beard Oil, a Moisturiser, and an Anti-Irritation Shaving Foam that the retailer description says contains chlorhexidine to keep skin clean and free of bacteria. Among its more distinctive products is the Activating Beard Serum, which contains caffeine; product copy states that after three months of daily use "you can see a visible difference with stronger, thicker and healthier beard" [8]. The brand also sells traditional wet-shaving hardware, including a double-edge safety razor.

Formulas draw on ingredients such as coconut oil, macadamia oil, vitamin E, sandalwood, menthol, glycerin, caffeine and chlorhexidine. The company says its products are developed, tested and perfected in Denmark. No vegan, organic or cruelty-free certifications are stated.

Current status

NJORD is active as of 2026, with a live brand site and an assortment of products carried at Matas.dk and across Firtal's own retail channels [3]. The site itself is minimal, functioning largely as a gateway to those retailers. Despite its Nordic-climate positioning, the brand's distribution appears limited to Denmark, with no public evidence of broader Nordic or international sales.
