Overview
Noble Isle is a British bath, body and home-fragrance company based in Chester, England, where all of its products are made. Founded by Katy Simpson, the brand builds its identity around ingredients sourced from named producers across the British Isles, pairing fine-fragrance scents with a "Britain in a bottle" positioning [8]. The line is vegan and not tested on animals, and the company places itself in the luxury tier, sold through department stores and used as a hotel amenity.
Most sources date the founding to 2012, though one editorial interview gives 2011. The company's Australian distributor states that Katy Simpson "founded Noble Isle in May 2012" [12], a year also supported by a 2019 Luxury Briefing interview and by Retail Revealed, which recorded the brand's ten-year anniversary in 2022. An Alyaka Magazine interview instead lists 2011 [9]; that figure appears to reflect the brand's early design work and the 2011 royal wedding that inspired it, rather than the launch itself.
Origin and founders
The brand was created by Katy Simpson, who is described as creative director and co-founder. Before Noble Isle, Simpson spent several years as a buyer in fashion retail and then about eight years in product development at a British cosmetics house, leaving corporate work in 2008. According to interviews, she launched the company with a small group of former colleagues after a passion "to produce something that was wholly British, sourcing ingredients from celebrated local producers and manufacturing our products in the British Isles" [8].
Simpson has said the idea took shape around the 2011 royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Reflecting on the day, she wrote that she was struck by "how amazing London is, in fact the whole of Britain, with all its history and rich culture." The name itself reaches back further: the company says "Noble Isle" was an early term for Great Britain used in the fifteenth century [12].
Products and positioning
Noble Isle sells bath and shower products, body care, hand care, haircare and home fragrance such as candles and reed diffusers. Its collections are organised by provenance, each tied to a specific place and ingredient: examples include Rhubarb Rhubarb!, drawn from Yorkshire; Whisky & Water, linked to Dufftown distilleries in Scotland; and Fireside, associated with Monmouthshire in Wales. The company traces ingredients to named suppliers, citing for instance E. Oldroyd & Sons, a sixth-generation rhubarb farm in the Yorkshire Triangle. Hero ingredients across the range include rhubarb, samphire, barley, beetroot, perry pear, elderflower and heather honey.
The company describes itself as combining "the art of perfumery with the rich, cultural heritage of the British Isles," and frames scent as a way to "enhance mood, trigger memories and create a sense of place." It states that its products contain real perfume built from top, heart and base notes. Simpson has described the brand as the first company to use rhubarb in bath, body and fragrance products [9].
Distribution is multi-channel. The brand reports being stocked by premium retailers including Fortnum & Mason, Liberty and Harrods [8], and it supplies hotels as a luxury amenity, describing itself as the preferred partner for Small Luxury Hotels of the World [7].
Ethics and sustainability
Noble Isle positions itself as luxury without compromising ethics. The company states that all of its products are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, that they "never have been, and never will be, tested on animals," and that they are made in the UK. Formulas are described as free from parabens, sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate.
On packaging, the company says it uses 50% recycled plastic and sustainable glass bottles, and that all of its packaging is recyclable [2]. It also reports having eliminated plastic from its hotel accessories since January 2020. The brand's own sustainability page lists no third-party certifications such as Leaping Bunny, the Vegan Society or B Corp.
The company supports several UK charities. It works with Clean Conscience, which redistributes surplus hotel toiletries that would otherwise reach landfill, and with The Hygiene Bank on hygiene-poverty relief. On launching hand sanitisers, it committed to donating 10% of those product sales to NHS Charities Together.
Recognition
Noble Isle has been recognised chiefly by Walpole, the body for British luxury. It was named to Walpole's Brands of Tomorrow programme in its class of 2016 [11], and in 2022 its founder was included in Walpole's list of the "50 Most Influential People in British Luxury" [10]. The brand has been profiled in UK luxury and retail trade press, including Luxury Briefing and Retail Revealed.
Current status
The company is active. It runs an e-commerce site, maintains its provenance-based collections, and continues its hospitality business as a hotel-amenity supplier. The most recent dated milestones in the available sources are from 2022, covering the brand's tenth anniversary and the Walpole recognition of its founder.
