Summary

Overview

Nonchalance is a German women's fragrance and personal-care line produced by Mäurer & Wirtz, a family-owned perfume and cosmetics house in Stolberg, in Germany's Rhineland. Built around a classic floral scent, it is, in the company's words, one of the most important fragrance and care series in Germany.

Sources place the line's beginnings in the mid-twentieth century, though the starting date depends on what is being counted. Mäurer & Wirtz dates the launch of the Nonchalance women's product line to 1950 [2], while fragrance databases date the signature Nonchalance perfume itself to 1960 [5]. Both remain in reference; the line is still in production and on sale.

Origin

Nonchalance is not an independent company but a house brand of Mäurer & Wirtz, which Michael Mäurer and Andreas August Wirtz founded as a soap factory near Aachen in 1845 [2]. A secondary retailer listing gives the house's founding as 1854, but the company's own history states 1845 [5]. Around 1949–1950 the business split into two divisions under the dalli-Werke umbrella, with Mäurer & Wirtz taking premium personal care. The Nonchalance women's line launched in 1950, followed by the Tabac Original men's series.

History and milestones

Over the following decades the brand grew a small family of related fragrances. Fragrance databases record several flankers: Nonchalance Feu Bleu in 1990 [6], Jolie de Nonchalance in 1993 [7], and Nonchalance Élà in 1999 [8]. The original scent is described as a floral-aldehyde perfume for women.

Ownership

The parent house, Mäurer & Wirtz, describes itself as a global perfume company and remains family-run across several generations, operating as an independent subsidiary within the Dalli Group [3]. Its wider portfolio spans around 17 owned and licensed brands, among them 4711 and Tabac. The house has grown through licensing and acquisition — entering fragrance licensing in 1992, acquiring Baldessarini from Procter & Gamble in 2012, and adding further fragrance businesses in 2025 [2].

Philosophy and positioning

Mäurer & Wirtz positions Nonchalance around "classic elegance," and what it calls floral harmony and fresh naturalness. The company frames the fragrance as timeless and elegant, summed up in the tagline "Nonchalance: for true beauty is everlasting" [1].

Current status

Nonchalance remains an active house brand, still sold and kept on a current brand page on the Mäurer & Wirtz website [1]. Its prominence is strongest in Germany, with wider distribution through its parent company's international channels.
