Overview
Nügg is an American skincare brand founded in Chicago in 2014, known for selling gel face masks in small single-serve pods rather than tubes or jars. It was created by Dr. Conny Wittke, a former president and chief executive of the beauty-tools company Tweezerman International, together with her husband Thorsten Kothe [4]. The brand's name is short for "nuggets of goodness for your skin" [7]. In late 2018 Nügg was acquired by New World Natural Brands, and it no longer operates as an independent company; its remaining products are sold through the storefront of a sister brand, Baebody.
Origin and founders
According to Beauty Independent, the idea for Nügg grew out of Wittke's heavy travel schedule, which left her with dry, tired skin and searching for a remedy [4]. She and Kothe set out to make a mask range they felt was missing from the market, positioning the brand, in the company's words, as an antidote to masks she considered overly trendy and made from subpar ingredients. Before founding Nügg, Wittke had led Tweezerman International as its president and CEO.
The product format was the brand's distinguishing idea. Nügg sold its gel masks in portion-sized pods, each holding a single application, which the company said let customers tailor a treatment to their changing skin from day to day. Beauty Independent describes Nügg as one of the first brands to introduce gel masks in single-serve pod packaging.
Products and positioning
Nügg's range centred on face masks aimed at specific concerns — hydrating, de-stressing, revitalizing, deep-cleansing and soothing variants among them — alongside formats such as a lip mask and a six-pod de-puffing eye mask. A "Skin Fizz" 3-in-1 cleanser, exfoliator and mask was listed among its hero products. Formulations drew on plant-based ingredients including acai and goji berry, coconut oil, aloe juice and shea butter.
The brand described its formulas as containing more than 90 percent natural or naturally derived ingredients, excluding petrochemicals, parabens, sulfates and synthetic colours and fragrances [7]. It also promoted a "Natural Oil Dispersion Technology" that, according to the company, relied on physics rather than chemistry to combine oils and water without chemical emulsifiers [7]. The products were made in the United States and marketed as cruelty-free. Priced largely between roughly four and ten US dollars, Nügg sat at the mass-market end of skincare and was distributed through retailers including Target, Whole Foods and Pharmaca, as well as its own website [4].
Recognition
Nügg's masks drew early notice from the beauty press. Its Hydrating Mask won an Allure Best Beauty Award in both 2014 and 2015, and a Revitalizing Mask was also recognised in the 2014 awards [10]. Trade publications including Women's Wear Daily and Cosmetics Business covered the brand during its independent years, and Cosmetic Executive Women profiled it in 2017.
Ownership
New World Natural Brands, a personal-care company based in Port Washington, New York, acquired Nügg in a deal that the brand's M&A adviser, the DVS Group, reports closed on 30 November 2018 [5]; Beauty Independent recorded the acquisition when it was announced in January 2019 [4]. According to the DVS Group, Wittke had engaged an adviser to explore a sale as she prepared for an international relocation, and New World Natural Brands approached the company directly. After the deal, Nügg joined a portfolio that New World assembled around several beauty and wellness brands, among them Baebody [4].
The connection to Baebody is sometimes mistaken for a parent-subsidiary relationship, but the two were independent businesses. Baebody was founded separately in Chicago in 2014 by brothers Ian and Devon Taylor, who built it as an Amazon-focused private-label skincare line, and it was likewise acquired by New World Natural Brands in 2018 [6]. The two are sister brands under the same owner; New World later consolidated Nügg's remaining inventory onto Baebody's website, where a collection page is labelled "Formerly known as Nügg Beauty."
Current status
Nügg is no longer active as a standalone brand. Following the 2018 acquisition, founder Conny Wittke went on to start a separate zero-waste haircare company, Superzero [9]. The original nuggbeauty.com website is no longer a working brand site, and the remaining Nügg-branded products are sold through the Baebody storefront under the same New World Natural Brands ownership. No independent activity under the Nügg name has been recorded since the acquisition.
