Overview
OBH Nordica is a Nordic consumer-products company based in Sundbyberg, near Stockholm, Sweden. In the beauty market it is known for personal-care devices — hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons, hot-air styling brushes, and clippers and trimmers — alongside a broader catalogue of small domestic appliances. The brand traces its origin to 1959, when Bertil Joffe first brought the professional salon hair dryer to ordinary consumers [7], although the OBH Nordica name itself dates from a 2002 merger of Swedish and Danish companies. Since 2015 it has been owned by the French group Groupe SEB [9].
The company's two halves give it a dual Swedish-Danish heritage. Sources differ on which date counts as its founding: the brand's own history points to 1959 and the Joffe hair-dryer launch, while Wikipedia's company record lists 2002, the year the merged legal entity was formed [8]. Glowpedia follows the brand's account of a 1959 origin, treating the 2002 merger and the 2003 launch of the consumer brand as later milestones.
Origin and founders
The brand's beauty story begins with an appliance. According to OBH Nordica's company history, the professional hair dryer had until 1959 existed only in hair salons; that year Bertil Joffe, trading through Joffe Marketing AB (later Nordica), made it available to consumers for the first time. The same product line that defines OBH Nordica's place in the beauty channel today is, in other words, the device its founder built the business on.
Joffe's Swedish company grew by adding household appliances, supplying retailers such as Coop and Åhlens and acting as the general agent for the French brands Tefal and Rowenta. In 1986 the brothers Peter and Thomas Ek bought the business from Joffe and expanded it across four brands — Tefal and Rowenta as agency lines, plus their own Carmen and Nordica [7].
The Danish side of the company has a separate founder. Ole Bødtcher-Hansen A/S, known as OBH, was established in Denmark in 1985 [8]. The two businesses came together in 2002.
History and milestones
In 2002 the Swedish Nordica AB and the Danish Ole Bødtcher-Hansen A/S merged to form OBH Nordica A/S, and the consumer brand was launched the following year [7]. The combined company built a single-brand strategy across the Nordic region, operating national divisions in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, as well as in China.
In July 2015 OBH Nordica was acquired by Groupe SEB, which bought it from funds advised by the investment firm Triton; the deal was announced on 9 July 2015 and expected to close at the end of August [9]. At the time of the acquisition, Groupe SEB reported that OBH Nordica had a turnover of SEK 612 million in 2014 and roughly a 7 percent share of the Nordic small-domestic-appliance market, with distribution reaching some 4,200 points of sale [9].
Ownership
OBH Nordica is owned by Groupe SEB, a France-based household-products group that the company describes as founded in 1857 and employing more than 34,000 people across some 150 countries [1]. Within that group, OBH Nordica sits alongside other appliance brands; one of the lines it historically distributed in the Nordics, Rowenta, is also a Groupe SEB brand. The parent company's acquisition release described OBH Nordica as a leading player in the small domestic appliance industry in Scandinavia.
Philosophy and positioning
OBH Nordica frames itself around accessible design rather than luxury. Its stated vision, in the company's words, is "to create ground-breaking innovation and outstanding design at a reasonable price and to make everyday life easier for our Nordic consumers" [1]. The brand sums this up in the tagline "Designing good life," and emphasises smart, durable, high-quality products meant to simplify daily routines.
In the beauty market the brand sits at a mass-market price level. Its hair tools are carried by Nordic beauty retailers such as Lyko, where they have been listed at prices ranging from roughly 239 to 1,799 kronor [10] — placing the range well below salon-exclusive territory and consistent with the brand's "reasonable price" positioning.
Products and innovation
OBH Nordica's relevance to beauty rests on its personal-care devices. The range covers hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons, hot-air brushes, and a line of clippers and trimmers, including beard, nose, ear and eyebrow trimmers sold under the Attraxion sub-brand. Broader Wikipedia coverage notes that the company's wider catalogue extends beyond grooming into kitchen and home products [8], but its beauty footprint is the styling and grooming hardware.
A defining part of that footprint is Björn Axén Tools, a co-branded line developed with the Swedish hair-salon brand Björn Axén. The collaboration pairs OBH Nordica's appliance engineering with input from Björn Axén's stylists to produce salon-inspired styling tools. Björn Axén is described as one of Sweden's most successful hair-salon companies and, for many years, a purveyor to the Swedish Royal Court [6]. The arrangement is a licensing and co-branding partnership rather than an acquisition of the salon brand.
Recent product activity has come largely through this line. In October 2024 Björn Axén Tools launched the Volumaster and the Magic Style Brush Pro, two tools aimed at making volume styling faster and longer-lasting [12]. In spring 2025 the line added the Thermocare Straightener, built with titanium-coated plates and heat-control technology intended to spread heat evenly and reduce damage, available from April 2025, followed by a Nano Hair Dryer in May 2025 [11]. These releases are sold through OBH Nordica's own site, Björn Axén's channels and salons, and selected retailers.
Current status
OBH Nordica is an active brand. It continues to operate as a Nordic company under Groupe SEB, with national divisions across Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, and its most recent beauty-device launches date to the 2024–2025 period through the Björn Axén Tools line. Its scope is regional — centred on the Nordic markets and China — rather than global.
