Summary

Overview

Ocuvers is a German line of eye-care products for dry and irritated eyes, made up of liposomal eye sprays, preservative-free eye drops and moistened eyelid-hygiene wipes. It belongs to innomedis AG, an owner-managed ophthalmic company based in Cologne [3], and an independent peer-reviewed study identifies the sprays as "Ocuvers, Innomedis AG, Germany" [9]. Unlike most brands sold alongside cosmetics, Ocuvers works in the territory between personal care and medical treatment: its products address the symptoms of dry eye rather than appearance.

The brand's central idea is captured in its German tagline, "Die Alternative zu Augentropfen" — the alternative to eye drops. Instead of dripping liquid into an open eye, the user sprays a fine mist onto the closed eyelid. The brand is active, with a current range of sprays, drops and wipes, although its consumer blog has not been updated since 2021.

Origin & founders

No founding year or founder is documented for the Ocuvers brand itself. What is known is its corporate home. The legal notice on the brand's website names innomedis AG as the operator, with an address on Walther-Rathenau-Straße in Cologne [3]. The same notice lists the company's executive board, chaired by Daniel Angerer and also including Lars Hünermann, with Nina Sartorius as chair of the supervisory board. None of them is described as the creator of the brand, so the people behind its launch remain unknown.

The parent company splits its work between two German cities. Cologne houses its headquarters, logistics and administration, while marketing and sales are based in Nuremberg [6].

Ownership

Ocuvers is owned by innomedis AG, a German stock corporation registered in Cologne. The company describes itself as owner-managed and says it stands for "innovation, quality and customer proximity" [6]. No acquisition history is documented for the brand, and no sister brands are recorded.

In a German business database, innomedis is classified under the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations and placed in the micro-enterprise size class [10]. Its stated business purpose is broad: the development, production and trade of health products spanning medicines, medical devices, cosmetics and food. In practice its focus is ophthalmology. The company's own catalogue groups its products into eye drops, eye sprays, lid hygiene, supplements and eye cosmetics, with Ocuvers covering most of the spray, drop and wipe ranges.

innomedis presents a set of company-wide figures on its website. It says its products are sold in 11 countries, that it has launched 50 different products, and that 350 ophthalmic shops receive its products directly, with around 1,800 eye-care professionals recommending or selling them. These numbers describe the whole company rather than Ocuvers alone. The company also states that it is certified to ISO 13485, the international quality-management standard for medical-device makers, and that its products are CE-certified [7].

Philosophy & positioning

The brand's argument rests on convenience. Eye drops can be awkward to use: the bottle has to be held over an open eye, and the drop often misses. Ocuvers asks the user to do something simpler. According to the brand's instructions, the spray is aimed at the closed eye from a distance of about ten centimetres. The eye stays shut for around five seconds while the liposomes — tiny fat-based droplets that resemble the natural oily layer of the tear film — settle on the edge of the eyelid. When the eye opens, the brand says, an artificial tear film spreads across the whole surface of the eye.

innomedis frames this as a natural next step in the treatment of dry eyes. On its product page it describes eye sprays with liposomes as "the natural evolution of eye drops", adding that they can be used anywhere and at any time [8]. At company level, innomedis says it uses its ophthalmic expertise to develop products with high tolerability for patients.

A second theme is the absence of preservatives. Ocuvers says its formulas contain no preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine, thiomersal or parabens [1]. The sprays are described as free of ethanol and benzalkonium chloride and free of ingredients with a preserving effect, and the drops are marketed as unpreserved. The brand also highlights the sprays as odourless and quick to absorb, and positions the hyaluron spray as suitable for every type of contact-lens wearer.

The brand's website spends much of its space explaining dry eyes in everyday terms. It lists symptoms such as tired, burning or scratchy eyes, a feeling of sand in the eye, blurred vision and pressure or pain. It then sets out common triggers: draughts, air conditioning, dry heating air in winter, harsh weather, long hours at a screen, air pollution and smoking. Diabetes, certain medications and existing eye diseases such as glaucoma are named as risk factors. The message throughout is that modern indoor life places growing strain on the eyes, and that a spray can be a simple everyday answer.

Products & innovation

The range is built around three eye sprays.

- ocuvers spray hyaluron combines liposomes with hyaluronic acid. It is aimed at moistening, soothing and caring for dry eyes, and at improving comfort for contact-lens wearers. It is sold in a 15 ml pump bottle with what the brand calls a patented COMFORT® system. - ocuvers spray lipostamin targets dry, burning and red eyes, uses the same COMFORT® bottle, and is the product the brand promoted during pollen season. - ocuvers spray complete is described by the company as a complete solution for dry eyes. It contains liposomes with 0.3% hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5 and aloe vera, and comes in a 10 ml bottle with a system the brand calls the patented 3K® system.

The website describes both bottle systems as patented but does not say who holds the patents.

Alongside the sprays, Ocuvers offers several eye drops. ocuvers drops LipiX combine liposomes with 0.15% cross-linked hyaluronic acid and contain no preservatives. ocuvers drops Relief contain 0.21% sodium hyaluronate, and the range also includes drops Gel and drops B5. Completing the line are ocuvers wipes, moist eyelid-hygiene cloths containing hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, which the brand presents as a gentle form of lid hygiene. Other ingredients named across the range include vitamin E-TPGS, eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) and liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). The website also promotes a spray for children's red and dry eyes.

Science & clinical evidence

Clinical evidence is central to how Ocuvers presents itself, and the available studies point in different directions.

The brand bases several of its claims on a 2017 study by A. Hueck and R. Wehrmann, published in the Open Journal of Ophthalmology, which compared four different liposomal sprays for treating dry eye. Drawing on this study, Ocuvers says spray hyaluron improves the moisture of the eye's surface across all degrees of dry-eye severity and gives a long-lasting improvement in the stability of the tear film. It says spray lipostamin also reduces redness when the surface of the eye is irritated. A health bulletin published on the brand's website states that the study examined spray hyaluron in 168 patients aged between 18 and 90 [5].

An independent study published in 2021 reached a less favourable conclusion. Researchers Heiko Pult, Farzana Khatum, Sonia Trave-Huarte and James Wolffsohn, working with Aston University's optometry research group, compared two phospholipid eye sprays in a crossover study of 30 people published in the journal Eye & Contact Lens [9]. One was Tears Again, a high-concentration spray made by Optima Pharma; the other was the low-concentration Ocuvers spray. Before use, the two groups showed no difference in comfort or tear-film stability. At both 10 and 30 minutes after application, however, comfort was about 12 points higher and the tear film stayed stable about five seconds longer with the high-concentration spray [9].

The authors concluded that the spray with more phospholipids significantly improved comfort and tear-film stability compared with the lower-concentration product. They added that practitioners need to choose an appropriate eye spray to get the most benefit for patients. The study did not test the Ocuvers spray against having no treatment, so it measures relative performance rather than whether the product works at all.

Distribution

Ocuvers is sold mainly through pharmacies and eye specialists. Its English-language website says the products are available in Germany and the Benelux countries through pharmacies or eye specialists, with other countries served on request [2]. The German site adds that the brand also works with many online pharmacies. The brand maintains a Facebook page alongside its bilingual German and English website.

Current status

Ocuvers is an active brand. Its website lists a current range of eight products — sprays, drops and wipes — and carries a 2026 copyright notice from innomedis AG [1]. The parent company's own site also continues to present the eye sprays and drops.

Activity in the brand's editorial content has been quieter. Its German-language blog, "Durchblick", ran posts on eye health over several years, including articles on blue-light filter glasses in 2019 and on using eye sprays hygienically during the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020. Its most recent post, dated 31 March 2021, promoted spray lipostamin for allergy sufferers during pollen season [4]. No newer posts have appeared since then.
